On Nov 25, 2025, a Long March-2F rocketcarried the Shenzhou-22 spaceship into space from theJiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwest China.①The launch took place at 12:11 pm Beijing Time andmarked China's first emergency-response flight missionin the history of its manned space program, as wasannounced a success by the China Manned SpaceAgency.

②The mission became necessary after anunexpected problem: the Shenzhou-20 spaceship, which should have brought astronauts backto Earth on Nov 5, had tiny cracks on its return capsule's viewport window. Space debris wassuspected to cause the damage, making the ship unfit to fly. The Shenzhou-20 crew then usedShenzhou-21 to return safely on Nov 14, leaving the Tiangong space station without a usablecrew ship for 11 days-a safety risk solved by Shenzhou-22.
About 10 minutes after liftoff, Shenzhou-22 separated from the rocket and entered itsplanned orbit. After three and a half hours of flying on a carefully designed path, it dockedwith the front port of Tiangong's Tianhe core module. Originally set to carry astronauts toTiangong in 2026, the unmanned Shenzhou-22 now delivered full cargos: packaged meals, fresh fruits and vegetables, medicines, equipment for the space station's daily operations, andtools to repair Shenzhou-20. The damaged Shenzhou-20 will stay docked at the space stationand serve as a platform for tests and experiments.
The three Shenzhou-20 astronauts completed China's 15th manned spaceflight and theninth group of residents aboard Tiangong. They spent 204 days in orbit-setting a record forthe longest stay by Chinese astronauts-and returned nine days later than planned. Orbiting400 kilometers above Earth, Tiangong is currently the only operational space stationindependently run by a single country.
