By day, Robert Titterton is a lawyer. In his spare time though he goes on stage beside pianist Maria Raspopova — not as a musician but as her page turner. “I’m not a trained musician, but I’ve learnt to read music so I can help Maria in her performance.”

Mr Titterton is chairman of the Omega Ensemble but has been the group’s official page turner for the past four years. His job is to sit beside the pianist and turn the pages of the score so the musician doesn’t have to break the flow of sound by doing it themselves. He says he gets just as nervous as those performing on stage.

A lot of skills are needed for the job. You have to make sure you don’t turn two pages at once and make sure you find the repeats in the music when you have to go back to the right spot.

Being a page turner requires plenty of practice. Some pieces of music go on for 40 minutes and require up to 50 page turns, including back turns for repeat passages. Silent onstage communication is key, and each pianist has their own style of “nodding” to indicate a page turn which they need to practise with their page turner.

But like all performances, there are moments when things go wrong. “I was turning the page to get ready for the next page, but the draft wind from the turn caused the spare pages to fall off the stand,” Mr Titterton said. “Luckily I was able to catch them and put them back.”

Most page turners are piano students or up‑and‑coming concert pianists, although Ms Raspopova has once asked her husband to help her out on stage. “My husband is the worst page turner,” she laughed. “He’s interested in the music, feeling every note, and I have to say: ‘Turn, turn!’”

We journalists live in a new age of storytelling, with many new multimedia tools. Many young people don’t even realize it’s new. For them, it’s just normal.

This hit home for me as I was sitting with my 2‑year‑old grandson on a sofa over the Spring Festival holiday. I had brought a children’s book to read. It had simple words and colorful pictures — a perfect match for his age.

Picture this: my grandson sitting on my lap as I hold the book in front so he can see the pictures. As I read, he reaches out and pokes the page with his finger.

What’s up with that? He just likes the pictures, I thought. Then I turned the page and continued. He poked the page even harder. I nearly dropped the book. I was confused: Is there something wrong with this kid?

Then I realized what was happening. He was actually a stranger to books. His father frequently amused the boy with a tablet computer which was loaded with colorful pictures that come alive when you poke them. He thought my storybook was like that.

Sorry, kid. This book is not part of your high‑tech world. It’s an outdated, lifeless thing. An antique, like your grandfather. Well, I may be old, but I’m not hopelessly challenged, digitally speaking. I edit video and produce audio. I use mobile payment. I’ve even built websites.

There’s one notable gap in my new‑media experience, however: I’ve spent little time in front of a camera, since I have a face made for radio. But that didn’t stop China Daily from asking me last week to share a personal story for a video project about the integration of Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei province.

Anyway, grandpa is now an internet star — two minutes of fame! I promise not to let it go to my head. But I will make sure my 2‑year‑old grandson sees it on his tablet.

On Oct.11, hundreds of runners competed in a cross‑country race in Minnesota. Melanie Bailey should have finished the course earlier than she did. Her delay came because she was carrying a competitor across the finish line.

As reported by a local newspaper, Bailey was more than two‑thirds of the way through her race when a runner in front of her began crying in pain. She stopped to help her fellow runner, Danielle Lenoue. Bailey took her arm to see if she could walk forward with help. She couldn’t. Bailey then bent down to let Lenoue climb onto her back and carried her all the way to the finish line, then another 300 feet to where Lenoue could get medical attention.

Once there, Lenoue was assessed and later taken to a hospital, where she learned that she had serious injuries in one of her knees. She would have struggled with extreme pain to make it to that aid checkpoint without Bailey’s help.

As for Bailey, she is more confused about why her act is considered a big deal. “She was just crying. I couldn’t leave her,” Bailey told the reporter. “I feel like I was just doing the right thing.”

Although the two young women were strangers before the race, they’ve since become friends. Neither won the race, but the spirit of human kindness won the day.

When I was a kid, I was extremely shy. I preferred reading books alone to playing with other children. My parents bought me a thick dictionary, and it became my best friend. I would spend hours looking up words, memorizing their meanings and learning how to use them in sentences. I loved the way it opened up a whole new world of knowledge for me.

At school, this dictionary helped me a lot. While other students struggled with new words in textbooks, I could understand them easily. My teachers often praised me for my rich vocabulary and accurate expressions. Gradually, I became more confident in my studies. However, the biggest benefit the dictionary brought me was not academic improvement, but the ability to think independently.

In the past, I always relied on teachers and parents to tell me right from wrong. But when reading the dictionary, I found that every word had multiple meanings and different usage scenarios. There was no absolute fixed answer in language. This made me realize that many things in life are not black and white. We need to analyze and judge by ourselves instead of blindly following others’ opinions.

Even today, I still keep that old dictionary on my desk. It is no longer just a tool for learning words. It is a symbol of my growth. It reminds me to keep learning, keep thinking and never stop exploring the unknown world.

Family volunteering is a wonderful way for families to bond and give back to the community. More and more families are choosing to take part in voluntary activities together, and this trend brings countless benefits to both children and parents.

Firstly, family volunteering strengthens family relationships. When family members work together to complete volunteer tasks, they have more chances to communicate and cooperate. Different from daily trivial conversations, they share feelings and solve problems side by side, which greatly shortens the distance between family members.

Secondly, it helps children develop good qualities. By participating in public welfare activities, children can learn to be grateful, responsible and caring. They will realize that many people in society need help, and small efforts can bring warmth to others. This experience cultivates their sense of social responsibility from an early age.

Finally, volunteering enriches family life. Instead of spending weekends on electronic devices or meaningless entertainment, families can spend their spare time on valuable public welfare work. It makes family life more meaningful and helps everyone stay away from lazy and indulgent lifestyles.

In short, family volunteering is a rewarding activity. It connects families with society, promotes personal growth and spreads positive social energy.

For a long time, many students regard scores as the only standard to judge learning outcomes. They bury themselves in endless exercises and exams, trying to get high marks, but gradually lose their curiosity and desire to explore the world. However, true learning is never about pursuing perfect scores, but about keeping a strong thirst for knowledge.

Scores are just a temporary reflection of learning conditions. They can show your mastery of knowledge at a certain stage, but they cannot define your ability, potential and future development. Many students get anxious and frustrated because of low scores, giving up exploring new knowledge and limiting their own growth.

On the contrary, curiosity is the eternal driving force of learning. A student with strong curiosity will take the initiative to discover problems, ask questions and explore answers. They are willing to learn beyond textbooks, expand their horizons and enrich their minds. Even if they fail in exams occasionally, they will not be discouraged, because their love for learning never fades.

We should understand that the purpose of learning is not to get high scores for admission, but to acquire abilities, shape independent thinking and understand the world. Scores can be improved through hard work, but the desire for knowledge is the most precious treasure that accompanies us for a lifetime. Keeping curious and eager to learn will help us go further on the road of growth.
