Writing Section

In the writing section, you will answer 12 questions to demonstrate how well you can write in English. There are three types of tasks.

Build a Sentence

Move the words in the boxes to create grammatical sentences.

A clock will show you how much time you have to complete this task.

Write an Email

You will read some information and use the information to write an email.

You will have 7 minutes to write the email.

You are a student who has been working on a research project and need to request an extension on the deadline from your professor, Dr. Jones. You have encountered some unexpected challenges that have delayed your progress.

Write an email to Dr. Jones. In your email, do the following:

• Ask for an extension on the deadline.

• Provide details about the challenges you have encountered.

• Suggest a new deadline and offer to provide updates on your progress.

Write as much as you can and in complete sentences.

Write for an Academic Discussion

Your professor is teaching a class on anthropology. Write a post responding to the professor's question.

In your response, you should do the following.

• Express and support your opinion.

As we have discussed in class, anthropologists are scientists who usually study cultural rituals and traditions to understand the values and beliefs of different societies. Some believe that anthropologists should participate in these rituals, while others argue that they should observe these rituals from a distance rather than participate in them. What is your perspective on this issue? Why?

I believe that participating in cultural rituals is essential because it helps anthropologists gain deep insights about the community. By actively engaging in these practices, anthropologists can experience firsthand the emotions and significance behind them, leading to a more authentic understanding of the culture.

I think observation from a distance is sufficient and more ethical. Participating in rituals can sometimes be intrusive and disrespectful to the community. Observing allows anthropologists to study cultural practices while minimizing their impact on the society.
