How Houseplants Became a Pandemic Mental Health Trend

When onetime personal plant shopper and aspiring "Martha Stewart of Succulents" Sonja Detrinidad opened her website, Partly Sunny Projects, in Southern California just weeks into the pandemic, she didn't have high hopes for it. Detrinidad figured people wouldn’t have the expendable income to spend on plants while they were instead scrambling to find groceries and toilet paper. But the opposite happened: She was flooded, shipping out 1,200 orders in June of 2020 alone. In the past year, Detrinidad estimates that she’s sent out more than 70,000 plants. Her success is just one obvious example of the industry-wide explosion of houseplant business brought by long homebound time.
Detrinidad runs a popular plant-focused TikTok account with over 285,000 followers, and her influence on customers turns out far bigger than she expected. One customer wrote her a sincere note: "Thank you again for sharing your videos on TikTok. Not to put pressure on you, but you have changed my life. I finally found something that helps me with my anxiety and sad days." Detrinidad admits she has received dozens of similar letters from buyers, all talking about how houseplants pulled them through tough, lonely pandemic periods.
"Where I live I have wide outdoor green spaces to relax," Detrinidad explains, "but many city dwellers are stuck in tiny studio apartments with no access to nature. They long to see green trees and lively plants. Growing houseplants offers them a precious chance to slow down and fully embrace the living space they stay in every single day."
Plus, Detrinidad points out, plant collecting can turn into a healthy, gentle addictive hobby. "You buy your first small plant, and soon you spot attractive leaves, unique colors and strange shapes of other varieties, then you just want to add more to your collection," she says.
Teresa Thomas, co-owner of New Orleans plant store Crazy Plant Bae, comes from a family full of plant lovers with green thumbs. She has witnessed unprecedented rising demand for indoor greenery this year, with both walk-in store sales and online delivery orders jumping sharply. "There’s an obvious close link between staying home and growing interest in houseplants," Thomas analyzes. "People gain much spare time during lockdowns and hope to beautify their living rooms. Besides, many choose air-purifying plants to ease worries about indoor air pollutants and poor air quality."
Alisa Richter, PR director of The Sill — an online plant brand with physical shops in New York and California — also confirms the huge business boom over the past year. "At the peak of lockdown restrictions, our website traffic and sales grew way beyond our original forecasts," Richter says. "We see lots of brand-new plant parents signing up. Since people spend most time indoors, they long for lively green plants to warm their living space. Those who only owned one or two plants before the pandemic now build large collections and take indoor gardening as a regular hobby."
Last autumn, The Sill launched a survey inside its Facebook fan group to ask members how plant parenting changed their lives during lockdown. One typical reply reads: "I ordered my first four plants back in April when everything shut down just to kill time. Now I own fifty plants, and they helped me get through all the weird, stressful pandemic days mentally."
