Scientists study the world and learn about things using a process called the scientific method (方法). By asking important questions and   45    the answers, it is possible to make amazing discoveries! Sometimes a scientist is   46    to answer his own questions, but if he has taken good notes, another scientist may come along later who is able to use new knowledge to answer it.

When you use the scientific method to conduct an experiment, you start by making observations (观察)about something that  47    you. Based on your observations, you make a hypothesis. This is using what you know to make a smart guess about what you think could happen. Then you are ready to begin your experiment. All during your experiment you take down notes, which are  48    experiment data (资料). You are constantly making observations during this time. You may make discoveries that cause you to improve your experiment as you go. Finally, you conclude your experiment and begin to look over your notes to decide what it all means. Based on  49    you have learned, you make a final statement about whether your hypothesis was correct or not. You have to have reasons and evidence to support what you are saying.

Using the scientific method can be difficult, but rewarding. Because all the steps are organized in a process, the   50    are more valid (可信的). When you provide observations as evidence to support what you are saying, your ideas are more likely to be accepted.

The Segway looks like a large stick with two wheels. The wheels are  46   to a platform (站板). The stick has handles for a person to hold. The person stands on the platform and holds the handles. The transporter moves forward or backward when the person moves his or her body in that  47    . The driver turns the handles to go left or right. Computers and certain devices on the Segway make the vehicle move and balance. It is powered by batteries that are recharged (允电) with electric power. It can travel at a speed of 19 kilometers an hour.

Dean Kamen, the inventor of the Segway says it was meant to reduce pollution and solve other environmental problems in cities. A Segway costs about five thousand dollars. People who have bought Segways say they are  48   useful though quite costly. But they can use the Segways instead of their cars for short trips, and it is a great way to save money on gasoline (汽油). The Segway also makes it   49    for people who have trouble walking because of medical problems to move around.

Segways are being used in more than twelve American airports. Security officers say they are able to move quickly on the devices in emergency situations, People on vacation are also learning to use Segways. Segway tours are popular in several American cities including Chicago, San Francisco, and Washington D.C. Tour company officials say it takes from ten to thirty minutes to teach people how to   50    a Segway. Then the group uses them to move around the city.

Many cats like empty shoe boxes or packing boxes. When there are such boxes in the house, they often become the cat's favourite places to be. This is the case with my cat, Molly. I bought her an expensive cat house, but he still prefers to stay in an old box.  65    is this? What's so special about this box?

In fact, cats tend to love boxes of all shapes and sizes. Honestly, you should try it. Just drop a box in front of them. The next thing you will see is real  66   on your cat's face.

One reason is that cats are predators (捕食性动物) by nature. This is why they prefer to be 67   on all sides. This helps them to ambush (伏击)their prey (猎物). Of course, they're not going to attack someone every time they are playing around in a box. But it's their natural behavior to act this way.

Another explanation is about how cats deal with stress.Cats are very  68    facing difficult situations. They find it easier to simply run away instead. A box offers them the opportunity to escape from the outside world.Staying in a small box gives them a sense of security.

Claudia Vinke, a Dutch scientist, did a(n)  69   about the stress levels of cats. She first divided many cats into two groups. She gave the first group empty boxes and not the other. Then, she let both groups of cats stay with strangers. After several experiments, she found that the cats in the first group were more friendly and comfortable with the people around them.  70   , it could be said that the cats got comfort and security from being able to stay in the boxes.

It should be noted that not all cats love boxes, But for most cats that do, these are some of the most widely believed reasons.

Time to go now. Molly is calling me to feed her. Meow!

When we are sad or afraid, we are more likely to slouch (没精打采地站、坐或走). This position causes us to feel worried or  45   . It makes harder to think clearly and remember things. In a study of 125 university students, 56 percent found it easier to do maths problems when they sat up  46    than when they slumped down.

48  ,people remembered the faces better after this single exercise.

It was a long-term study for those who were over 50, and they were healthy as well. Another study found that watching violent programming harms people's memory as well.

4.Walk backwards

When trying to recall something, don't just think “walk backwards". In a series of   50  , people viewed a video of a movie, a word list or a set of pictures. Just imagine the situation. Carol has just resigned(辞职) from her job at a computer software company. At first, the company arc surprised as she is one of their top program developers. But then they start to   75   . What if she copies some data and takes them away with her? Carol still has 30 days to serve at the company. So, they told her to take “gardening leave"---still receives a pay check, but not   77    to come into the office.

My mom took me to the zoo, and it was there I first saw a giraffe.   1    was taller than most buildings I have seen. His neck reached up far into the bright blue sky,   2    touching the clouds. “It is dangerous for little kids to   10     on roofs. I'm very sorry.”

I sighed (叹气) as we left the zoo, leaving my pet giraffe behind forever.

That night, my dad gave me a great   11    : a tiny hamster in a small cage! His fur was light   12    ,with dark brown spots all over, just like the giraffe in the zoo. The National Gallery in London has introduced an “art route" that people must follow round the gallery. Are set routes actually a better way to enjoy museums and galleries? Or should people be   45    to view exhibitions in any order they choose? What do you think-are set routes better?

Yes-people will get more from their visit

Experts spend years learning about the items in their museums and galleries. They know the best order in which people should see the exhibits, so that visitors can enjoy and learn about them.   46   ,if there was an exhibition of a painter, the works could be arranged to show visitors how their style developed through their career. If a person is on an art route, they won't 47    any important pictures, and will be guaranteed to see everything. The experience will be enjoyable for the visitor, and they will have their own space in which to appreciate great works.

No-freedom is part of the fun

Most exhibitions are already   48    in some kind of order. However, not everyone wants to look at the same things in the same way. Some visitors just want to enjoy a few pieces and then leave. Besides, if everyone follows the same route, some people might take a long time looking at one object and   49    everyone down.Equally, if a visitor wants to study something for more time, they may feel pressured by people behind them. One of the great joys of exhibitions is   50   noticing something. When a visitor is drawn to an object, it can feel special and they can learn about it by themselves. If everyone is following the same route, this is less likely to happen, so the experience will not be as much fun.
