My family have collected bottles from sunrise to sunset all year long. My mother leaves at dawn to collect cans, and when she returns 12 hours later, I help her pull the shopping cart to the recycling center through the streets of Bushwick. I have kept it a secret all the time. I couldn't bear the idea of my friends knowing our family live off other people's garbage. I felt guilty for being embarrassed, but I couldn't help it. I was not ready to trust someone else.

Then I took a college essay course, which required me to write an essay about what had the greatest impact on my personal growth. I chose to write about the impact my neighborhood had on me. At the end, there was just one sentence about can collecting.

One day after class, my teacher asked me to discuss my essay draft. “Your story has potential; however, it is not about personal growth. Would you tell me about the can collecting?” So I was faced with sharing my secret. But he was my teacher and I trusted him so I rewrote the essay.

Two days later I found out we were expected to read our essays out loud after lunch, but I felt ashamed that my peers would know. As I headed down to the cafeteria, I met up with a friend, Mason, who I always have lunch with. I was less talkative, and Mason found that I had something on my mind. I told him I was embarrassed about my family's story. “You should be proud that your family are struggling to take care of their loved ones.” This was what I needed to hear and I felt like I could finally breathe after all those years of hiding a part of myself.

When we got back to class, I felt ready to read my draft out loud. After my classmates listened to my story, they said things like: “Each of our stories is unique to our experience and shapes us.” “Your being ashamed only hurts you.” “Accept your home and community, because they are your true family.”

Now, when people ask me what my parents do for a living, I tell them, not with embarrassment or shame but with pride, that my parents are can collectors.

C.They expressed thanks.D.They offered persuasion.

Most children love stories. Stories are entertaining and fun, but can they be more than just fun? Findings from a new study led by Rebecca de Leeuw, an assistant professor at the Radboud University, indicate stories in movies can also be meaningful for children.

The researchers contacted children between 4 and 15 years old after they watched the Disney film Inside Out. This film takes place mainly in the head of an 11-year-old girl, where her emotions — Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust, personified as different characters — conflict on how to help her best in her new life after her family moves. The story follows the “hero’s journey” — a classical narrative (叙事的) framework, which involves a hero who goes on an adventure, overcomes challenges, and returns changed. So the research team chose this film. When making this film, the film-makers had in-depth discussions with psychologists to make the emotion animation consistent with scientific knowledge.

The research team asked mostly open-ended questions to encourage the children to share their thoughts, including the key question: “Was there a part of the movie you had to think about?” Children looked at stills of important scenes and were invited to explain in their own words what happened. If they liked, they also rewatched scenes of the film.

While watching, children made sense of the feelings, motives and behavior of characters in the film, using their social intelligence skills. They also further developed these skills when they were challenged in making sense of the story. Children also mentioned they appreciated seeing acts of pity, kindness, love and bravery in the film. Just like adults, they were even touched to tears by these qualities.

One of the children in the study even expressed that Joy inspired her to never quit in her own life. The more insights children gained while watching, the more meaningful the story became for them. Altogether, stories in movies can be a quick way for children to gain life experience and wisdom.

28. Why did the research team choose the film Inside Out?

A. It focuses on scientific knowledge.B. It is directed and produced by Disney.

C. It is based on a girl’s emotional journey.D. It follows a typical story-telling structure.

29. How did the research team draw their conclusion?

A. By interviewing children.

B. By conducting experiments.

C. By referring to previous studies.

D. By making comparisons between two groups of children.

30. What were the children asked to do in the study?

A. Share their personal favorite stories.B. Repeat touching scenes of the film.

C. Voice their opinions about the story.D. Come up with questions on the film.

31. What can be concluded according to the findings?

A. Stories in movies can increase children’s survival skills.

B. Stories in movies would help children become mature.

C. Stories in movies would improve children’s social interactions.

D. Stories in movies can make children more intelligent academically.

Imagine a customer-service center that speaks your language, no matter what it is. Alorica, a company in Irvine, California, which runs customer-service centers around the world, has introduced an artificial intelligence (AI) translation tool that lets its workers talk with customers who speak 200 different languages and 75 dialects. So an Alorica worker who speaks, say, only Spanish can deal with a complaint about an incorrect bank statement from a Cantonese speaker in Hong Kong. And it wouldn’t need to hire an employee who speaks Cantonese.

However, Alorica isn’t cutting jobs. It will increasingly hire those who are comfortable with new technology.

Potentially, the threat: Perhaps companies won’t need as many employees — and will cut some jobs — if chatbots can handle the workload instead. Consider Suumit Shah, an Indian businessman who caused an uproar last year by saying that he had replaced 90% of his customer support staff with a chatbot named Lina. The move at Shah’s company, Dukaan, which helps customers set up e-commerce sites, reduced the response time to an inquiry from 1 minute, 44 seconds to “instant”. It also cut the typical time needed to solve problems from more than two hours to just over three minutes.

Similarly, researchers at Harvard Business School found in a study last year that job postings for writers, coders and artists decreased greatly within eight months of the arrival of ChatGPT.

But being exposed to AI doesn’t necessarily mean losing your job to it. The Swedish furniture retailer IKEA, for example, introduced a customer-service chatbot in 2021 to handle simple inquiries. Instead of cutting jobs, IKEA retrained 8,500 customer-service workers to handle such tasks as advising customers on interior design and fielding complex customer calls.

The experience at Alorica and IKEA suggests that AI may not prove to be the job killer that many people fear. Instead, the technology might turn out to be more like breakthroughs of the past—the steam engine, electricity and the Internet, which get rid of some jobs while creating others and probably make workers more productive in general to the eventual benefit of workers themselves, their employers and the economy.

32What does the author want to tell us by the example in paragraph 1?

AThe power of AI.BThe threat from humans.

CThe customer requirements.DThe tips on language learning.

33What advantage does Lina have over other staff?

AWinning the trust of customers.BResponding to customers faster.

CSelling more products to customers.DHaving a great relationship with Shah.

34What were IKEA’s customer-service workers asked to do in 2021?

ATake on other duties.BLeave their company.

CMove to HongKong.DDevelop latest chatbots.

35What is the best title for the text?

AHow Will AI Change Our Lives?BHow Should We Use AI Effectively?

CWill AI Take Away Many Human Jobs?DWhat Is the Future of Traditional Companies?

第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Do you know how to deal with failure at school? Four steps will help you get the most out of each failure and more on.

36    When you feel bad after failing, talk with your parents or good friends, or any other adult. Then decide to take the duty to improve yourself. Read the teachers’ comments on your test carefully.

Ask yourself what you were trying to do and why you failed.   37   Maybe you didn’t have all the information you needed; maybe you made a mistake or a poor decision. If so, give yourself a pat on the back. Fewer people ever get something right the first time they try it, and often it takes them many times.    38   Sometimes the failure isn’t because of something you did or didn’t do; it is someone else’s fault. But don’t spend time blaming them; instead, move on toward your goals.

39    Review the situation to see what your choices are. There is a different between making a decision and giving up. Deciding to follow a better way is one thing; simply walking away means you really have failed.

Keep trying again. Successful people are different because they choose their next steps instead of just reacting to feelings. If a goal still important to you, figure out what to do and go after it again. 40

A. No pains, no gains.

B. Don’t give up easily

C. Failure is unavoidable

D. Remove your bad feelings

E. If it isn’t, do your best on something else

F. Actually it was because you were very lazy

G. Usually it was because you were trying out a new skill or learning a new subject.

It was exam time at Marc's school. Every day, their teachers gave them loads of homework and told them the test was very important and that they ought to spare no effort to perform well in it. Everyone followed the teachers' instructions and made preparations for it, except Marc. He just turned a deaf ear to it. He thought he would rather play football than study.

His mum and dad repeated the importance of revision for exams over and over again. They told him that he should be working hard preparing for the test. But the weather was sunny and he thought he had better things to do.

"Shall we go to the park?" he said to his friend Huck one afternoon. "It's a nice day. We could play football and kick around." Huck shook his head. "I'm supposed to review my lessons," he said. "I'm going home to do some math."

Marc was amazed. "You'd rather do math than play football?" “Math is important. Besides, my mum says she will buy me a mountain bike if I do well in the math exam.”

“That's crazy”, said Marc. Huck shrugged(耸肩) and replied, "Wait until I beat you in the test and you will watch me riding past on my mountain bike!"

" You won't beat me," said Marc.

" Oh yes, I will." "Oh no, you won't! That will never happen. Just wait and see!" For the first time ever, Marc wanted to perform well. He couldn't bear it if his friend came top and he did badly. So when he got home, he opened his math book. But there was so much to do. All of a sudden, he felt like he'd forgotten everything he had learned that year! He didn't know where to start. When his sister Lily came in, he was sitting expressionlessly by the desk, just staring out of the window.

小作文范文:

Dear Peter,

Sorry to hear that you have faced such tough situations, I'm writing to deliver some advice.

Speaking of the first situation, I totally understand the loneliness of not knowing anybody in the new class, because I just went through the similar difficulty. To get rid of the bad feeling, I suggest that you should give your classmate a hand when they need it! Only in this way can you earn yourself opportunities to meet new friends. When it comes to the pressure caused by poor grades, remember to believe in your hard work. It is wise of you to consider each test a process to learn from your mistakes. Why not apply yourself to taking down notes carefully and ask teachers for help immediately? It will help you to master daily knowledge effectively.

I hope the suggestions above can benefit you. Contact me if you have other problems. We can handle them together!

Yours,

Li Hua

21. C. GRAND FLASH 2025.

解析:题目要求为一篇 490 字的科幻小说寻找最适合的比赛。我们需要对比各个比赛的字数限制:- TRAVEL TALES: 1,500-1,700

- CROSS-GENERATION FRIENDS: 1,500-1,700

- GRAND FLASH 2025: 500

- NATURAL WORLD: 1,500-1,700

总费用 = £7.50 + £7.50 = £15

23. B. It accepts non-fiction entries.

解析:题目问 NATURAL WORLD 与其他比赛的不同之处。

关键信息在于 NATURAL WORLD 的描述:“Prose fiction and narrative non-fiction”(散文小说和叙事性非小说)。

听力原文

(Text 1)

M: My job is so boring. I really don’t like dealing with customers in the front desk.

W: Really? Maybe you should try something new.

M: I don’t know. I’ve always wanted to be an architect, but I’d have to go back to school.

(Text 2)

W: The announcement said my flight will depart from Gate 30 instead of 20. Why is my flight number not on the screen at Gate 30? It will depart in 35 minutes.

M: You must have missed the second announcement. Please ignore the gate change. It was an error.

(Text 3)

M: We’re moving very slowly again now. I’m going to miss my meeting if we don’t speed up soon.

W: Yes, we seem to be late most days at the moment.

(Text 4)

W: How about going out for a meal on your birthday?

M: Just you and me?

W: We can ask some friends. If you fancy staying in, I could cook for us all.

M: A meal out would be great. I’ll ring Anna and Karl.

(Text 5)

M: Do you still have that book I lent you, Mary?

W: It’s just here, Mark. I’m still part-way through reading it. Normally I read science fiction or love stories but this is fascinating!

M: I’m glad you like it. I’m not a fan of horror fiction but I thought it was great.

(Text 6)

W: You took this on the way to the mountain? I can see the village. And I can also feel the beauties of nature. This was the campsite where you were staying?

M: Yes. We wanted to save money because it was high season. So we didn’t book a hotel or live in a villager’s house.

W: Why didn’t you take photos of the mountain you were climbing?

M: I did. I took lots of photos because there was a wonderful view. But unfortunately those were no good.

W: What a pity! Maybe something went wrong with the camera.

(Text 7)

W: Can you tell me which one of these files contains the sales figures? I need them for the meeting tomorrow afternoon.

M: Susan and David have them, but I recommend looking at Susan’s files. I heard she always comes out with a very good analysis of the figures.

W: Great, I’ll go with Susan’s then. Thanks for the help.

M: No problem. By the way, what time does the meeting start? I guess I’ll have to attend, too.

(Text8)

W: Hi Tony! I didn’t expect to meet you here. How’s it going?

M: Fine, thanks. Well, I just read about it in the local paper. I thought it sounded interesting.

W: Me too. From the review, I didn’t expect to be able to get a table.

M: Me neither, but if you look at these prices, you can see why people lost interest.

W: You don’t say. It doesn’t seem unreasonable to me. And look over there, that’s Brett Flick. It’s not every day you can say you spent the evening in the same place as a Hollywood star.

M: I suppose not. Anyway, I’d better be getting back. We’re sitting over there, near the entrance.

(Text 9)

M: ... I’m speaking to Fiona Josephs, who’s written a book about a woman called Beatrice Cadbury. Fiona, why did you want to write about her?

W: Well, one day I was reading about a school in the Netherlands. That had been started by a poor married couple and the wife was called Beatrice Cadbury! I discovered she was a member of the famous Cadbury family. I felt puzzled. Why was a rich woman living as a poor person? The answer was so amazing that I decided to write a book.

M: What did you discover?

W: Well, as a child she lived in huge houses and was educated at the best schools. She had a very comfortable life. But Beatrice grew up wanting to make society a better place. She married a man from the Netherlands. While she was in the Netherlands, she decided she didn’t want to receive any more money from the Cadbury business. She told her brother, who was running the company, that he should give her share of the money to the factory workers instead.

M: And then what happened?

W: Well, she even invited poor people to live in her house. When it became too crowded, she and her family had to live in a tent.

M: Oh, a great woman!
