三、阅读理解

四、A) 阅读下列短文,从各题所给的ABCD四个选项中,选出最佳选项。(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)

A

Have you ever thought about where your old clothes go after you throw them away? Every year, millions of tons of used clothes are sent to landfills. In the United States alone, the average person throws away about 37 kilograms of old clothes each year. That’s like throwing away 1,000 T-shirts every second around the world! Most of these clothes are made from materials that do not break down easily, so they stay in the environment for hundreds of years.

The fashion industry is one of the biggest polluters on the planet. Making clothes requires huge amounts of water and energy. For example, it takes about 2,700 liters of water to make just one cotton T-shirt. That’s enough water for one person to drink for two and a half years! Also, the chemicals used to dye clothes often flow into rivers and harm fish and other wildlife. The good news is that more and more people are becoming aware of these problems and are choosing to dress more sustainably.

What does “sustainable fashion” mean? It means buying clothes that are made in an environmentally friendly way. Some companies are now using recycled materials, such as plastic bottles and old fishing nets, to make new clothes. Others are using natural dyes that do not pollute water. Sustainable fashion also means wearing clothes for longer and not following every new style. When you buy a new shirt, think about whether you will wear it at least 30 times. This “30 wears rule” helps reduce waste.

Another great way to practice sustainable fashion is to buy second-hand clothes. Thrift stores and online platforms for used clothing have become very popular, especially among young people. Buying used clothes not only saves money but also reduces the demand for new production. You can also organize a clothing swap with your friends. Everyone brings clothes they no longer wear, and you exchange them. It’s like getting new clothes for free!

Finally, when clothes are truly worn out, don’t just throw them away. Many brands now have recycling programs where you can drop off old clothes. Some old clothes can be cut into rags for cleaning, or turned into blankets and insulation materials. Remember, every small action counts. The way we dress can make a big difference to the health of our planet.

26. How many kilograms of old clothes does the average American throw away each year?

A. About 27 kg.    B. About 37 kg.    C. About 47 kg.    D. About 57 kg.

27. What problem does the fashion industry cause according to the passage?

A. It creates too many jobs.    B. It uses little water and energy.

C. It pollutes rivers with chemicals.    D. It makes clothes last too long.

28. What is the “30 wears rule” mentioned in the passage?

A. You should wash a new shirt 30 times before wearing it.

B. You should wear a new shirt at least 30 times before throwing it away.

C. You should buy 30 new shirts every year.

D. You should only wear a shirt for 30 minutes.

29. Which of the following is a way to practice sustainable fashion?

A. Buying every new style that comes out.

B. Throwing old clothes directly into the trash.

C. Organizing a clothing swap with friends.

D. Using more chemicals to dye clothes.

30. What is the main purpose of the passage?

A. To encourage people to throw away old clothes quickly.

B. To introduce the history of the fashion industry.

C. To discuss the environmental impact of fashion and suggest solutions.

B

In a busy city, there lived a young man named Leo. He worked as a delivery driver, riding his motorcycle through the streets every day from morning until night. Leo was always in a hurry. He rushed to deliver packages, weaving between cars and running red lights just to save a few seconds. His friends often warned him to slow down, but Leo always replied, “Time is money. I can’t afford to waste a single minute.”

One rainy evening, Leo was trying to deliver a package to a customer on the other side of the city. The rain was falling heavily, and the roads were slippery. Leo was speeding as usual. As he turned a corner, he saw an old woman crossing the street slowly with a walking stick. Leo hit the brakes hard, but the wet road made his motorcycle skid. He lost control and crashed into a lamppost.

When Leo woke up, he was lying in a hospital bed. His leg was broken and wrapped in thick bandages. The doctor said he would need to stay in bed for at least two months. Leo felt terrible, not because of the pain, but because he couldn’t work. He worried about his bills and his future. A week later, a young girl came to visit him. She was the granddaughter of the old woman he had nearly hit. “Thank you for not hurting my grandma,” the girl said, handing him a small cake. “She has been praying for you every day.”

Leo was deeply moved. He realized that his careless driving could have caused great harm to someone else’s family. During his long recovery, Leo had a lot of time to think. He read books, listened to music, and watched the sunrise from his window. For the first time in years, he was not in a hurry. He noticed the little things he had always ignored: the birds singing, the smell of rain, the laughter of children playing outside.

When Leo finally recovered, he returned to work. But he was a different person. He no longer ran red lights or sped through traffic. He drove slowly and carefully, enjoying the scenery along the way. He found that he arrived at his destinations only a few minutes later than before, but he felt much happier and safer. He also started greeting people with a smile. The old woman he nearly hit became his good friend. She often cooked him warm meals and told him stories of her youth.

Leo learned that rushing through life makes you miss what truly matters. The moments we save by hurrying are not worth the peace we lose. Sometimes, the most valuable thing we can give ourselves is the permission to slow down.

31. What was Leo’s job?

A. A taxi driver.    B. A delivery driver.

C. A bus driver.    D. A train conductor.

32. What caused Leo’s accident?

A. He fell asleep while driving.    B. His motorcycle broke down.

C. He was speeding on a wet road.    D. Another car hit him from behind.

33. How did Leo feel when he woke up in the hospital?

A. Happy to have a rest.    B. Thankful to be alive.

C. Worried about losing his job.    D. Angry at the old woman.

34. What did Leo do differently after he recovered?

A. He quit his job and stayed at home.    B. He drove more slowly and carefully.

C. He bought a new motorcycle.    D. He moved to another city.

35. What lesson did Leo learn from his experience?

A. Time is more important than safety.    B. Speeding helps you get more work done.

C. Slowing down can bring peace and happiness.    D. Accidents only happen to careless people.

C

The world’s oceans are in trouble. Every year, about 11 million tons of plastic waste enter the ocean. This is equivalent to dumping one garbage truck full of plastic into the ocean every minute. Scientists predict that by 2050, there could be more plastic by weight than fish in the sea. This plastic pollution harms marine animals in many ways. Turtles mistake plastic bags for jellyfish and eat them, which blocks their stomachs. Seabirds feed plastic pieces to their chicks, causing them to starve. Whales and dolphins become trapped in abandoned fishing nets, unable to swim to the surface for air.

But where does all this ocean plastic come from? Surprisingly, most of it does not come from people throwing trash directly into the sea. About 80% of ocean plastic comes from land. It blows out of trash cans, falls off garbage trucks, or is washed down rivers. In fact, research shows that just 10 rivers around the world, mostly in Asia and Africa, carry 90% of the plastic that ends up in the ocean. This means that if we can stop plastic from entering these rivers, we can make a huge difference.

Many countries and organizations are working hard to solve this problem. One amazing project is called “The Ocean Cleanup”. This organization has developed a giant floating system that uses ocean currents to collect plastic. The system is shaped like a large U and moves slowly through the water, trapping plastic inside. They have already removed hundreds of thousands of kilograms of plastic from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, which is a huge area in the ocean where plastic has collected due to swirling currents.

On an individual level, we can also help reduce plastic pollution. The simplest way is to use less single-use plastic, such as plastic bags, straws, water bottles, and coffee cups. Carry a reusable water bottle and shopping bag with you. Say no to plastic straws when you order a drink. Also, make sure to recycle properly. Rinse out plastic containers before putting them in the recycling bin. And never litter. A piece of plastic dropped on the street today could float down a storm drain, into a river, and eventually reach the ocean.

Another innovative solution is turning ocean plastic into useful products. Some companies collect plastic from beaches and turn it into sneakers, sunglasses, and even building materials. This creates a reason to clean up plastic and prevents new plastic from being made. Every piece of plastic we remove from the ocean or keep from entering it is a victory for our planet. The ocean gives us half of the oxygen we breathe and food for billions of people. It’s time for us to return the favor.

36. How much plastic waste enters the ocean each year?

A. About 1 million tons.    B. About 5 million tons.

C. About 11 million tons.    D. About 20 million tons.

37. What is the main source of ocean plastic according to the passage?

A. Fishing boats.    B. Land-based trash.

C. Cruise ships.    D. Underwater volcanoes.

38. What is “The Ocean Cleanup”?

A. A type of plastic-eating fish.    B. A project that collects ocean plastic.

C. A new kind of recyclable plastic.    D. A law against plastic production.

39. Which of the following is suggested as an individual action to reduce plastic pollution?

A. Using more plastic straws.    B. Throwing trash into rivers.

C. Carrying a reusable water bottle.    D. Buying more single-use plastic bags.

40. What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A. Ocean plastic cannot be used again.    B. Companies have no interest in ocean plastic.

C. Turning ocean plastic into products is a good idea.    D. The ocean does not need our protection.

D

Have you ever wondered why some people seem to learn new skills quickly while others struggle? The answer may lie in something scientists call “neuroplasticity” (神经可塑性). This is the brain’s ability to change and grow throughout your life. In the past, people believed that after childhood, the brain stopped developing. But modern science has shown that this is not true. Your brain can form new connections between brain cells at any age. Every time you learn something new, your brain physically changes.

Neuroplasticity is why practice makes progress. When you repeat an action or recall a piece of information, the connections between the related brain cells become stronger. Think of it like a path in a forest. The first time you walk through tall grass, it’s difficult. But if you walk the same path every day, it becomes clearer and easier to follow. Your brain works the same way. This is why a pianist can play a difficult piece without looking at the keys, and a basketball player can make a free throw without thinking. Their brains have built strong pathways through thousands of repetitions.

So, how can you use neuroplasticity to become a better learner? First, challenge yourself with new and difficult tasks. Your brain grows most when you are struggling just outside your comfort zone. If something is too easy, your brain doesn’t need to change. If it’s too hard, you may give up. The “Goldilocks zone” is where the task is challenging but possible. Second, practice consistently over time. Studying for one hour every day is much more effective than studying for seven hours on a single day. Your brain needs time to form and strengthen those new connections.

Third, get enough sleep. While you sleep, your brain replays the day’s events and decides what to keep and what to forget. Studies have shown that people who sleep after learning remember much more than those who stay awake. So, pulling an all-nighter before an exam is actually a bad idea. Fourth, use different ways to learn the same thing. Read about it, listen to a podcast, discuss it with a friend, and draw a picture of it. The more different types of brain connections you make, the stronger your memory will be.

Finally, believe that you can improve. People who think that intelligence is fixed and cannot change are less likely to try hard when they face difficulty. On the other hand, people with a “growth mindset” believe that they can get smarter through hard work. They see challenges as opportunities rather than threats. The good news is that anyone can develop a growth mindset. Remember, your brain is like a muscle. The more you use it, the stronger it becomes. You are not born with a limit on what you can learn. You can always grow, always change, and always improve.

41. What is neuroplasticity?

A. The brain’s ability to stay the same throughout life.

B. The brain’s ability to change and grow at any age.

C. The brain’s ability to remember everything perfectly.

D. The brain’s ability to work without sleep.

42. Why does the author mention a path in a forest?

A. To show that learning is difficult.    B. To explain how practice strengthens brain connections.

C. To describe what the brain looks like.    D. To prove that forests are good for learning.

43. According to the passage, what is the “Goldilocks zone” of learning?

A. Tasks that are very easy to do.    B. Tasks that are impossible to finish.

C. Tasks that are challenging but possible.    D. Tasks that involve physical activity.

44. Why is pulling an all-nighter before an exam a bad idea?

A. Because sleep helps the brain strengthen new memories.

B. Because studying at night is not effective.

C. Because exams are always in the morning.

D. Because coffee is bad for your health.

45. What is a “growth mindset” according to the passage?

A. The belief that intelligence cannot change.

B. The belief that only children can learn new things.

C. The belief that people can get smarter through hard work.

D. The belief that some people are born with limits.

B) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。(共5小题;每小题1分,满分5分)

Have you ever felt that you have too many things to do and not enough time? You are not alone. Many people struggle with managing their time effectively. __46__ It can help you get more done in less time, reduce stress, and even leave you with more free time to enjoy life. Here are some practical strategies to improve your time management.

First, make a to-do list. Every morning, write down everything you need to accomplish that day. __47__ Checking off items as you complete them gives you a sense of achievement and motivates you to keep going. Studies show that people who write down their goals are much more likely to achieve them.

Second, prioritize your tasks. Not all tasks are equally important. Use the Eisenhower Matrix, which divides tasks into four groups: urgent and important, important but not urgent, urgent but not important, and neither urgent nor important. __48__ Tasks that are neither urgent nor important can be eliminated or done later in your free time.

Third, avoid multitasking. Many people think that doing two things at once saves time. However, research has shown that multitasking actually makes you less efficient. __49__ It is much better to focus on one thing at a time and give it your full attention. This is called “single-tasking”, and it leads to higher quality work.

Fourth, take breaks. Working for long periods without rest can lead to burnout and decreased concentration. The Pomodoro Technique suggests working for 25 minutes, then taking a 5-minute break. __50__ During your breaks, stand up, stretch, or walk around. This helps refresh your brain and body.

Managing your time well is a skill that anyone can learn. Start with one or two of these strategies and practice them until they become habits. You will be surprised at how much more you can accomplish.

A. This helps your brain focus and prevents tiredness.

B. Then, focus your energy on the urgent and important tasks first.

C. You can also ask others to help you with your work.

D. Then, arrange the items in order of importance.

E. Good time management is a valuable skill.

F. Your brain has to switch between tasks, which wastes time and energy.

G. More free time means you can watch more TV.

五、任务型阅读(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

阅读下面短文,根据短文内容回答下列问题。

Last summer, a group of 15 students from Sunshine Middle School took part in a unique program called “Silent Days”. The goal of the program was to help students understand the lives of people with hearing loss and to develop empathy. For three days, the students agreed not to speak at all. Instead, they had to communicate using only gestures, writing, and smartphone apps.

On the first morning, the students gathered in the school hall. The teacher, Ms. Wang, explained the rules. “For the next 72 hours, no speaking. You can write notes, use hand signals, or type on your phones. Also, you must wear these special headphones that play white noise to block out most sounds.” The students put on their headphones, and suddenly the world became very quiet. At first, some students laughed and made funny gestures. But soon, they realized how difficult it was.

During breakfast, Li Wei wanted to ask for more milk. Normally, he would just say, “More milk, please.” Now, he had to wave his hand to get the server’s attention, then point to the milk jug, and then hold up two fingers to show he wanted two cups. It took three times longer than usual. Zhang Mei needed to ask her friend a question about homework. She tried to whisper, but Ms. Wang shook her head. So Zhang Mei took out her notebook and wrote, “What’s the math homework on page 27?” Her friend wrote back, “Exercise 5, 6, and 7.” The simple conversation that would normally take 10 seconds now took two minutes.

On the second day, the students went to a shopping mall to complete a task: buy a gift for a classmate without speaking. Zhao Lin had to find a bookstore and ask for a specific novel. He wrote the title on a piece of paper and showed it to the shop assistant. The assistant nodded and led him to the right shelf. However, when Zhao Lin wanted to ask about the price of another book, he had to write again. He felt frustrated and tired. “I never realized how much I depend on my voice,” he wrote in his journal that night.

On the third day, something unexpected happened. The students found that they had become more observant. Without the ability to speak, they paid more attention to body language, facial expressions, and eye contact. They also became more patient. Instead of interrupting, they waited for others to finish writing or gesturing. Some students even discovered that they could have deeper conversations through writing because they thought more carefully about their words.

When the three days ended, the students took off their headphones. The world suddenly seemed very loud. But they had learned a valuable lesson. “I used to take speaking for granted,” said Wang Fei. “Now I understand how hard life can be for people with hearing loss. I will never shout at someone just because they can’t hear me. I will find a kind way to communicate.” The “Silent Days” program became an annual tradition at the school, helping many students develop empathy and respect for others.

66. What was the purpose of the “Silent Days” program?

Thank you for your letter. You asked about the Campus Science and Technology Festival in our school. I’m happy to share the details with you.

The festival was held last Friday afternoon in our school gymnasium. It was a wonderful event full of exciting activities. The main activities included a robot exhibition, where students showed robots they had built, and a science invention competition, in which participants presented their creative projects. There was also a fascinating lecture on space exploration given by a university professor.

I took part in the science invention competition with my partner. We made a smart trash bin that can sort waste automatically. Although we didn’t win the first prize, I learned a lot about programming and teamwork. I felt proud of what we created, and the experience has inspired me to study science harder.

Do you have similar festivals in your school? I would love to hear about your science activities. Looking forward to your reply.

Yours sincerely,

Li Hua
