Reading Passage 1:Why We Need to Protect Polar Bears
Polar bears are classed as marine mammals because they spend most of their lives on sea ice, relying on it for hunting, mating and resting. Unlike other marine mammals, however, they have no blubber to insulate them from the cold. Their fur is thick and water-repellent, and beneath it is black skin that absorbs sunlight.
Sea ice is disappearing due to global warming. In the Arctic, summer ice cover has shrunk by about 40% since the 1970s. Polar bears use sea ice to hunt seals, their main prey. Without sea ice, they cannot catch enough food, and many starve. Some are forced to swim long distances, which uses up their energy reserves.
Polar bears are also threatened by pollution. Toxic chemicals accumulate in their bodies, affecting their health and ability to reproduce. Climate change and pollution together reduce their population.
Questions 1–5(TRUE/FALSE/NOT GIVEN)
