The concept of “carbon neutrality” has evolved from a niche scientific concern to a global geopolitical and economic imperative. It represents not merely an environmental goal but a fundamental restructuring of the global energy matrix and industrial infrastructure. The transition, however, is fraught with “green paradoxes.” For instance, aggressive climate policies aimed at reducing future fossil fuel demand can inadvertently incentivize resourcerich nations to extract and sell their reserves more rapidly before assets become “stranded,” thereby increasing shortterm emissions. Moreover, the production of renewable energy technologies and the infrastructure for a circular economy themselves require significant mineral resources, the mining of which poses its own environmental and social challenges. Thus, the path to netzero is not a linear progression of simply replacing the old with the new; it is a complex, systemic transformation that demands careful calibration of policy sequencing, international equity, and technological innovation to avoid substituting one set of problems for another.
