Raised in Miami, surrounded by poverty and struggling schools, Barrington Irving overcame all the difficulties to become the youngest person to fly alone around the world. He not only built his own plane and completed his historic flight, but also founded an educational non-profit organization. Irving believes the root of success lies in first having a dream — something sparked (激发) by powerful learning experiences that inspire children to pursue careers, particularly in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
The moment of inspiration for Irving came at 15 while he was working in his parents’ bookstore. A customer, a professional pilot, asked Irving if he’d ever considered becoming a pilot. “I told him I didn’t think I was smart enough; but the next day when he gave me the chance to sit in the pilot’s seat of a real commercial airplane, I knew I loved it.”
Driven by his newfound passion, Irving began washing airplanes to save up for flight school. He improved his skills by practicing on a $ 40 flight simulator (模拟器) video game at home. Then another dream took hold: flying alone around the world. He faced more than 50 rejections for sponsorship before finally persuading several companies to donate individual aircraft components. His eventual takeoff was an act of faith — with no weather radar, no deicing system, and just $ 30 in his pocket.
After 97 days, 26 stops and dozens of thunderstorms, snowstorms and sandstorms, he finally landed to a roaring crowd in Miami. “Stepping from the plane, what truly changed my life wasn’t the celebration; it was seeing so many young, inspired faces watching and listening. I had no money, but I was determined to give back with my time, knowledge and experience.” True to his word, he has been doing so ever since. Irving’s non-profit-making organization, Experience Aviation (航空), aims to channel the wonder he saw in those young eyes into concrete career paths, thereby increasing the numbers of youth in aviation.
24. What does Irving believe is most important for success?
A. A good education.B.An intense devotion.
C. A strong initial dream.D.A clear career outlook.
25. Why did Irving decide to become a pilot?
A. He played flight simulator games well.B. He was inspired by a firsthand experience.
C. His parents’ bookstore specialized in aviation.D. He received a scholarship from a flight school.
26. What do we learn about Irving from paragraph 3?
A. He was funded to fulfill his dream.
B. He donated his plane to a flight school.
C. He used to be addicted to video games.
D. He never gave up in face of difficulties.
27. Why did Irving set up Experience Aviation?
A. To set an example for the youth.
B. To share his personal flight stories.
C. To offer financial support to young people.
D. To get young people interested in aviation.

For centuries, the soil was considered a silent world. This perception, however, is now being overturned by scientists who are discovering that the ground beneath our feet is, in fact, full of life.
The revelation began with an experiment by Marcus Maeder, a sound artist and researcher. When he first pushed a specialized microphone into a mountain grassy field, his headphones erupted with a loud mix of strange sounds — thrumming, chirring, and scraping. This accidental discovery opened the door to the study of living sounds in soil, which uses sensors pushed into the soil to pick up the tiny movements made by underground life.
This hidden world is home to immense biodiversity. Ecologist Carolyn-Monika Görres’s research on root-eating beetle larvae (甲虫幼虫), provides a fascinating example. She discovered that the larvae produce distinct, species-specific sounds together, a process called stridulation (摩擦发声). In her lab, she observed that larvae in groups stridulated frequently — over 600 times in a few hours. This unique sound helps scientists identify and monitor these pests, which can cause significant damage to crops.
The practical applications are significant. In agriculture, this technology could allow farmers to find the exact location of pest problems, enabling targeted pesticide (农药) use instead of blanket applications, thus protecting soil health.
However, this research has also revealed an important but worrying truth. The same sensitive equipment picks up the noise of human activity — distant traffic, construction, and airplanes — deep within the soil. The impact of this noise pollution on underground life is still unknown, but it is unlikely to be positive. More alarmingly, in intensively farmed soils, the natural mix of sounds often falls silent, indicating a loss of biodiversity and degraded land health.
Listening to the soil does more than satisfy scientific curiosity. It reveals the complex, vital ecosystem that sustains us and serves as a strong warning that our actions can quiet its essential chorus, urging us to become better caretakers of the land.
28. What does the underlined word “overturned” in the first paragraph mean?
A. Ignored.B. Confirmed.C.Explained.D.Challenged.
29. What can we learn about Marcus Maeder’s experiment?
A. It aimed to record life in soil.B.It led to an unexpected finding.
C. It pioneered the use of sensors.D.It proved previous assumptions.
30. How can the technology benefit soil health?
A. By replacing chemical use.B.By preventing pest problems.
C. By applying chemicals precisely.D.By strengthening pesticide effect.
31. What does the author intend to convey in the last paragraph?
A. Curiosity fuels scientific progress.
B. Human actions may silence the soil.
C. More research on soil life is needed.
D. The soil ecosystem is highly complex.

Drones (无人机) have become integrated into our daily life over the past decade — in sectors as diverse as entertainment, health care and construction. More notably, they have also begun to transform the way we grow food. Just a few years ago, agricultural drones were costly, small and difficult to operate, limiting their appeal to farmers. Now, they can be flown immediately after purchase and carry up to 100 kg, making them increasingly practical for farmers worldwide.
Modern agricultural drones function as flying machines with a wide range of uses. By switching attachments, they can spray (喷洒) crops, spread fertilizer, sow seeds, and monitor field health. Because of this flexibility, they are useful on farms of all sizes.
The global adoption of this technology has followed a unique path. Unlike traditional farm machinery, which typically spread from high-income countries to middle-and then lower-income ones over decades, drones have taken a different path. They expanded first from East Asia to Southeast Asia, then to Latin America, and finally to North America and Europe. Use in wealthier regions is still growing, with the U.S. seeing particularly fast growth: registered farm drones jumped from about 1,000 in early 2024 to some 5,500 by mid-2025, with actual numbers likely higher.
Drones help farmers save time and money by working faster and more efficiently than humans. They reduce the need for dangerous and tiring work, potentially making farming more attractive to younger generations. They also create new skilled jobs, such as drone pilots and technicians. Environmentally, drones support “sustainable intensification” — growing more food on the same land with fewer resources. They also help keep soil healthy and save water by targeting only the areas that need it.
The drone revolution is reshaping farming faster than most earlier technology. In just five years, millions of farmers worldwide have started using them. Early signs point to major gains in efficiency, safety, and rural employment. But the full picture isn’t clear yet.
32. Why are agricultural drones appealing to farmers now?
A. They’re flexible.B.They’re portable.
C. They’re low-cost.D.They’re user-friendly.
33. What is the main feature of agricultural drones described in paragraph 2?
A. Self-flying.B.Light-weight.
C. Energy-efficient.D.Multi-functional.
34. What does paragraph 4 focus on?
A. Benefits drones bring.B.Jobs drones support.
C. Problems drones solve.D.Resources drones save.
35. What does the underlined part “the full picture isn’t clear yet” in the last paragraph mean?
A. The final decision isn’t official yet.
B. The overall impact remains uncertain.
C. The desired outcome isn’t guaranteed yet.
D. The fundamental problem remains unsolved.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
I used to lose myself in books for hours as a child. During my exam years, I could study with remarkable focus, revising for hours without pause. ____36____ Endless scrolling (滚动) on my phone took over. And for someone who writes for a living, this is a professional danger as well as something that made me sad.
So I made a quiet promise. Whenever I encountered a new word, I would look it up immediately and record it. ____37____ Each week, I’d spend a few minutes reading the list back in an attempt to get the word to stick in my memory. The list now spans almost 20 pages, and this has become my way of fighting back against mindless scrolling.
____38____ It is often extremely impractical. If I’m reading on crowded trains, I have to stop reading mid-sentence, pull out my phone and type while avoiding bumping into fellow passengers. It slows my reading significantly. I’ll admit I often skip the weekly review — but still, I kept going. The habit became a small discipline in my daily life.
Most of these words never make it into my conversations. A few do, like “incorrigible” or “lugubrious”. The rest remain like museum pieces — admired and catalogued but rarely handled. That’s fine. The real value lies in the act of noticing itself. ____39____ It feels like a mental muscle waking up after years of sleep.
Now my mind feels sharper. I find myself reaching less often for the same tired handful of adjectives, and more often for something precise and strong. ____40____ It’s like finding the missing puzzle piece that locks the picture into place. In a world designed to steal our attention, using my phone to think slowly feels almost rebellious (叛逆的). After years of passive scrolling, my mind is gradually waking up again.
A. Not that it’s an easy habit to keep up.
B. Nothing fancy, just a simple list on my phone.
C. Each new word gives my brain a gentle stretch.
D. It reminded me of happy memories I had forgotten.
E. But in recent years, my concentration began to fade.
F. I wanted to restore that mental flexibility to fight the brain rot.
G. Few things are more satisfying than unearthing the exact word you were searching for.

I was sitting next to Missy when Mrs. Bartlett announced a group project: creating a newspaper about the culture we were studying. We listed three friends we wanted to work with. Missy and I exchanged confident smiles — we’d chosen each other. Mrs. Bartlett informed us that she would consider our choice and would let us know the results the next day.
The next morning, when the bell finally rang, I slid into my seat beside Missy. Mrs. Bartlett began reading group lists. Group One, Group Two — then Group Three. Missy’s name was called. Good, I thought, I’m in Group Three. But as she read the remaining names, mine never came. My stomach tightened.
Then I heard the last group: “Karina, Mauro, Juliette, Rachel.” I could feel the tears well in my eyes. How could I face being in that group: the boy who never did his homework, the one girl who always sat in the back and refused to speak, and the other girl who was always late for class?
I fought back tears as I walked up to Mrs. Bartlett. “Why?” I whispered.
She rested a gentle hand on my shoulder. “Well, Karina,” she said, “I need you to help your group get a passing grade on this assignment. Only you can help them.”
Her words struck me like a physical blow. All this time, I’d seen myself as someone who needed the right group — but she saw me as someone who could lead one.
“Will you help them?” she asked.
I stood straighter. “Yes,” I heard myself say, surprising even myself.
I bravely walked to where the others in my group sat, and we started awkwardly. But as we divided tasks — Mauro on finding pictures, Juliette on writing short articles, Rachel on designing the layout (布局) — something changed. The awkwardness faded into cooperation.

第一节(满分15分)
Dear Chris,
I’m Li Hua, a senior three student in our school. I’m writing to share my thoughts on the school’s AI voice assistant.
I’ve been using it to practise spoken English, and the pronunciation feedback is really helpful. However, the conversation topics feel a bit distant from our daily life. I wonder if we could add more campus-related topics, such as school events or after-class activities. That might make the practice more engaging for students.
Thank you for your great work!
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
第二节(满分25分)
Halfway through the week, I felt myself enjoying their company.I was no longer counting minutes until the bell rang. I found myself explaining a concept to Mauro, not with impatience, but with a genuine desire for him to understand. I listened, truly listened, to Juliette’s careful explanations about her writing. I laughed at a witty headline Rachel proposed. The day before the presentation, we were the last to leave. As we stood back to look at our project, a quiet pride settled over us. We had made this together.
On presentation day, Mrs. Bartlett listened with a soft smile.Afterward, she handed back our project. A bold “A” was circled at the top. But as I looked at my group — at Mauro’s proud grin, Juliette’s shy smile, Rachel’s confident nod — I knew the real grade wasn’t on the paper. Mrs. Bartlett hadn’t just given me a group; she had given me a new way to see things. I learned that sometimes, the people you never thought you’d understand may become the lesson you never forget.
听力原稿:
(Text 1)
W: I hope you can have a picnic with us this Saturday.
M: This Saturday? I really want to go but my sister is in hospital, so I’ll babysit her little daughter.
(Text 2)
M: Mum, can I watch the live broadcast of the reality show tonight?
W: Sorry, dear! Ten thirty is too late for a boy of your age to stay up. You can watch the replay tomorrow at 10 am or 7 pm.
(Text 3)
W: James. What are you doing in this picture? Is it a lesson?
M: No, it isn’t. We couldn’t go to the playground because it rained that day. We played in the classroom after lunch.
(Text 4)
M: I’m really thirsty.
W: We’ve got some drinks in the fridge. There’s orange juice, iced tea, or cola — which one do you want?
M: I was thinking of having a soda, but now you’ve changed my mind. I’ll go with the iced tea.
(Text 5)
W: So how is your Japanese class going, Xiaoming?
M: Well, not bad. Listening is okay because the pace is slow. But speaking is a bit difficult.
W: How about the writing?
M: I’m fine with it because the characters are similar to Chinese.
(Text 6)
W: What kind of shoes are you looking for?
M: I’m really not sure.
W: Well, let me show you what we have. We carry running shoes, basketball shoes, casual sneakers, and training shoes.
M: I’m going to use them mainly for PE class and walking around campus.
W: Well, running shoes are great for jogging and long walks. Basketball shoes have high tops for ankle support, which is good if you play a lot of court sports. Casual sneakers are stylish and comfortable for everyday wear, but they’re not really designed for sports. Training shoes work well for gym workouts, light running, and even everyday walking.
M: Which one would you recommend to me?
W: I’d say the training shoes are your best bet.
M: Okay, I’ll take a look around.
(Text 7)
W: Jim, I’ll go to a movie with a friend tonight. Would you like to join us?
M: Sorry, Anna, but I already have plans. I’m going to a concert with Alice tonight.
W: Alice? Who is she?
M: She is my cousin. She’s a big fan of Gavin DeGrew. But her mother didn’t want her to go to the concert alone, so she asked me to go with her.
W: I also love Gavin’s songs.
M: Then why don’t you go to the concert?
W: I can’t afford a ticket. I don’t earn as much as you do. I’m just a secretary and you’re a sales manager in our company.
M: Well, it’s my aunt who paid for the ticket.
(Text 8)
M: Rise and shine! It’s time to get to work.
W: What?! It’ s four o’clock in the morning. The sun isn’t even up yet.
M: You live on a farm now. We have a lot of chores to do before sunup and we need to start doing them now.
W: I’ll milk the cows later. Let me sleep in.
M: All right, you can milk the cows a little later, but we have to feed the animals now. We also have to clean out the barn before we start repairs on the fences.
W: Why can’t we do those things when the sun is up?
M: Because we’ll need daylight hours to tend to the crops. Just be glad that the harvest is three months away.
W: I don’t think I’m cut out to be a farmhand.
M: You should have thought of that before agreeing to spend the summer at your uncle’s farm. Now move!
W: But I thought I’d spend the days learning how to ride horses.
M: City girls!
(Text 9)
M: Welcome to “Australia’s Moving Experience”! How can I help you?
W: Well, I’m moving to the United States next month.
M: So when should we come pack your things?
W: I guess that would be on Monday, March 14th.
M: Do you want any help with an after-packing clean-up?
W: Yes. I promised the landlord I’d give her the keys back by 5:00 pm on the 17th.
M: OK. We’ll just schedule the clean-up for that day.
W: Oh, I nearly forgot to tell you. I don’t want my furniture shipped with me. Would it be possible to put my furniture storage here by the end of this month?

W: Yes, I need my dishes where I can find them quickly.
M: We’ll put them in what we call the emergency pack. Anything else?

M: Got it! Say, how about putting things like your alarm clock in your personal package?
W: Great!
M: Um, I couldn’t help noticing the new CD player you’re carrying. Do you want to take special care of it?
W: Nothing special.
(Text 10)
It’s nice to see so many of you here. I’m going to tell you something about Hollylands --- our facilities and activities, and the exhibitions we have coming up. I hope you’ll find it interesting. There are some activities that we ask you to book in advance. For example, the activity requiring at least 7 days’ notice is the drama workshop. Another activity you need to think ahead is the garden sculpture experience, but that’s a question of the weather, which we can’t control. But the video you work yourself, so that’s available any time.
Speaking of weather, we run a reduced range of facilities in winter. Our artists’ studio isn’t run in winter. And the animals in the mini zoo are kept indoors for warmth, so that doesn’t operate either. The adventure playground does --- though make sure the children are wrapped up well!
OK, now we run a program of exhibitions through the year, so I’ll tell you about the next few. Our current exhibition, Local Lives, ends on 26th August, and then one called History in Picturesstarts the next day. This includes all sorts of objects from the past, such as farm machinery. Next, we’re running a show called People at Work, and this will open on 19th September. Last, we’ll have another exhibition called Land from Air. A competition accompanies the show, with the exciting prize of a balloon trip for two. So, we hope to see you at least one of the exhibitions.

Dear Chris,
I’m Li Hua, a senior three student in our school.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
