What is the main topic of the talk?

选项:

A. A problem that was solved by a group of women inventors

B. A safety concern with nineteenth-century firetrucks

C. A way to prevent fires in tall buildings

D. An invention that improved safety in cities

原文定位:开头提出高楼火灾问题 ➔ “Enter Anna Connolly, who received patterns for fire escapes…” ➔ “Connolly’s fire escapes saved lives.”

Why does the speaker mention a parachute?

选项:

A. To highlight a problem with some designs

B. To give an example of a modern solution

C. To give an example of a patented invention

D. To emphasize the variety of businesses in cities

原文定位:“…many early ideas were impractical, like one idea was to attach a parachute to your head. The parachute idea, well, this wouldn’t work too well, would it?”

演讲者用了反问句 “wouldn’t work too well, would it?”,这种强烈的个人态度往往必考,直接指向A选项的“存在问题”。B/C/D均为无中生有。

What does the speaker like about Anna Connelly’s first design?

选项:

A. It was the least expensive option.

B. It took into account the origins of most fires.

C. It had all of the features required by law.

D. It allowed firefighters to reach higher floors.

Anna Connolly’s initial fire escape design was a bridge… This made good sense since most fires started on the lower floors of buildings.”

同义替换:B选项的 “took into account”(考虑到)对应原文的 “since”(因为);“origins of most fires” 对应 “most fires started on the lower floors”。

干扰项特征:A(最便宜)、C(符合法律)、D(帮消防员)原文均未提及,属于典型的“常见常识干扰”。

What does the speaker indicate about fire escapes in newer buildings?

选项:

A. They were inspired by Connelly’s second design.

B. They are constructed with iron supports.

C. They cannot be seen from the outside.

D. They do not work as well as Connelly’s inventions.

These days, buildings in the US are built with interior stairwells that are fireproof for escape and are not visible from the outside.”

原词重现:选项C的 “cannot be seen from the outside” 几乎是原文 “not visible from the outside” 的原词复现,属于送分题。

➔ Failed Idea

➔ Successful Idea

Man: Listen to a talk on a history podcast.

In the 19th century, cities in the United States became crowded. Many businesses and apartments were housed in tall buildings. Fires became a major concern. Most firetruck ladders only reached the fourth floor, which wasn’t high enough.

Although laws were passed to require escape routes, many early ideas were impractical, like one idea was to attach a parachute to your head. The parachute idea, well, this wouldn’t work too well, would it? Other such ideas were met with resistance, too.

Enter Anna Connolly, who received patterns for fire escapes in the 19th century.Anna Connolly’s initial fire escape design was a bridge so people could safely go up to the roof or upper floors of their own building, cross to the building next door, and go down the stairs there. This made good sense since most fires started on the lower floors of buildings.

After this design, Connolly created another that was a series of platforms attached to the side of a building with ladders connecting them. She specified they’d be made of iron, since iron is fireproof and resists pressure.

Well, this design worked, was practical, and was adopted across the country. Connolly’s fire escapes saved lives.

These days, buildings in the US are built with interior stairwells that are fireproof for escape and are not visible from the outside. But you can still see Connolly’s design on older buildings in cities.
