Some people believe that air travel should be restricted as it causes serious pollution and will use up the world’s fuel resources.

“The aviation sector currently accounts for about 2% of global emissions.”

According to The Guardian, the aviation sector accounts for only about 2% of global emissions, suggesting that its overall contribution to climate change is relatively limited compared to major sectors such as energy production and industry. Consequently, even a substantial reduction in air travel may have only a marginal impact on global emission levels.

Just 100 companies have been the source of more than 70% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions since 1988

ExxonMobil, Shell, BP and Chevron are identified as among the highest emitting investor-owned companies since 1988. If fossil fuels continue to be extracted at the same rate over the next 28 years as they were between 1988 and 2017, says the report, global average temperatures would be on course to rise by 4C by the end of the century. This is likely to have catastrophic consequences including substantial species extinction and global food scarcity risks.

According to a widely cited report covered by The Guardian, just 100 fossil fuel companies have been responsible for more than 70% of global greenhouse gas emissions since 1988. This suggests that the climate crisis is not simply the result of individual choices such as air travel, but is deeply rooted in the structure of global energy production. Focusing solely on aviation therefore risks oversimplifying a problem that is largely driven by a small number of major emitters.

“Aviation makes up more than 2% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Even in developed countries, only about half of people fly each year and about 1% of the world’s population is responsible for more than half of the aviation emissions.”

Air travel is not a universal activity. In fact, a small fraction of the global population accounts for the majority of aviation emissions.

Some recent studies suggest that aviation emissions could be significantly reduced without limiting flights, simply by improving efficiency and aircraft design.

We don’t save the planet by flying less, but by learning how to fly better.

IELTS Band 9 Essay
📖 Introduction
English:
In recent years, growing concern over climate change has led to calls for restricting air travel due to its environmental impact and reliance on fossil fuels. While this argument appears reasonable at first glance, it oversimplifies a far more complex issue. This essay argues that although aviation contributes to global emissions, imposing blanket restrictions on air travel is neither the most effective nor the most equitable solution. Instead, climate change should be understood as a structural problem requiring targeted and systemic responses.

🌫️ Body Paragraph 1(承认问题 + 数据反转)
Admittedly, aviation does contribute to environmental degradation by emitting greenhouse gases and consuming fossil fuels. However, its overall impact is often overstated. According to the International Energy Agency, the aviation sector accounts for only a small proportion of global carbon emissions compared to industries such as power generation and road transport. Therefore, focusing exclusively on air travel risks overlooking far more significant sources of pollution.
Body Paragraph 2(结构性问题)
English:
More importantly, climate change is fundamentally a structural issue rather than merely the result of individual behaviour. As reported by The Guardian, just 100 fossil fuel companies have been responsible for more than 70% of global greenhouse gas emissions since 1988. This highlights that emissions are highly concentrated among a limited number of major producers. Therefore, focusing solely on individual actions such as reducing flights risks overlooking the deeper systemic drivers of the climate crisis, particularly the global dependence on fossil fuel-based energy systems.
 Body Paragraph 3(不均衡 + 解决方案)
English:
Furthermore, aviation emissions are not evenly distributed across the global population. Air travel is far from a universal activity; instead, a small proportion of frequent flyers accounts for a disproportionately large share of emissions. This suggests that blanket restrictions on all travellers may be both inefficient and inequitable. A more effective approach would be to implement targeted measures, such as regulating high-frequency flyers, investing in sustainable aviation technologies, and improving overall efficiency. Indeed, some studies indicate that significant emission reductions can be achieved without reducing the number of flights, but rather by making air travel more efficient and environmentally sustainable.
🏁 Conclusion
English:
In conclusion, while air travel does contribute to environmental degradation, its role in global emissions is relatively limited and highly unevenly distributed. Restricting aviation alone is unlikely to meaningfully address climate change and may divert attention from more significant structural issues. Therefore, governments should prioritise systemic reforms and targeted interventions rather than imposing broad restrictions on air travel.

  • imposing blanket restrictions on air travel is neither the most effective nor the most equitable solution.
  • The issue is not merely behavioural, but fundamentally structural.
  • Focusing solely on aviation risks overlooking larger sources of emissions.

(Critical Thinking)

✔ oversimplifies a far more complex issue✔ focusing solely on individual actions risks overlooking…

(System Thinking)

targeted measures(针对性措施)

Surface → Analysis → Structure → Implication → Solution

  • oversimplifies
  • disproportionately
  • structural
  • equitable
  • targeted measures

Should we restrict flights?

Are we focusing on the right cause of climate change?
