Some claim that news reporting is irrelevant to ordinary individuals and that consuming it through newspapers or television is merely a waste of time. While certain types of news may seem distant from people's daily concerns, I disagree that access to news is a waste of time.
Admittedly, not all news content appears directly applicable to individuals' immediate lives. This is because some journalists and news platforms tend to report unusual human-interest stories or dramatic international events that are far removed from the lives of the general public in order to attract the attention of busy audiences. For instance, some so-called pressing global challenges, such as extensive coverage of geopolitical conflicts in the Middle East, which have resulted in severe humanitarian crises and the destruction of essential infrastructure, may seem detached from the everyday routines of many people. These issues often require the international community to prioritize resources and expertise to develop strategies, rather than actions that ordinary individuals can take. In such cases, audiences may feel overwhelmed by information that offers little practical value, particularly when repetitive reporting dominates media output, which leads some to conclude that following the news is an inefficient use of time.
However, news plays an indispensable role ininforming decisions and shaping a well-rounded perspective, and dismissing news consumption as a waste of time is a narrow view. From a decision-making perspective, access to domestic and international news enables people to understand changes that may affect their daily lives, thereby helping them make more informed decisions. For example, the recent outbreak of conflict in the Middle East has disrupted international energy supplies; when car owners hear such news, they may rush to petrol stations to fill their tanks before prices rise. From the perspective of broadening one's outlook, engaging with news events fosters critical thinking, especially among children, and expands their worldview. Due to the wide range of content in news programmes, regular exposure broadens individuals' perspectives and enhances their analytical abilities. Even if certain stories do not have an immediate impact, they contribute to a deeper understanding of an increasingly interconnected world.
In conclusion, although some news content may appear distant and of limited practical value, it remains essential for informed decision-making and intellectual development. Therefore, rather than being a waste of time, engaging with the news is a meaningful way to stay aware, responsible, and connected to the wider world.
