In 2023, Zhang Ming took part in the National Para Games. He won two gold medals in the 100-meter and 200-meter races. When reporters asked him how he made it, he said, “The only thing that can stop you is yourself. Never say never.”

Have you ever heard of “vertical farming”? It is a new way of growing food in tall buildings instead of on flat land. Scientists believe it could be the future of agriculture.

In vertical farms, plants are grown in stacked layers (堆叠的层) indoors. They get artificial light and nutrients from water, not soil. This method has many advantages. First, it uses much less land. One vertical farm can produce as much food as 10 traditional farms. Second, it saves water. Vertical farms use 70% less water than traditional farming because water is recycled. Third, crops can grow all year round, no matter what the weather is like outside.

However, vertical farming also has challenges. The biggest problem is the cost. Building a vertical farm is expensive. It also uses a lot of electricity to power the lights and machines. Scientists are working on ways to make it cheaper and more energy-efficient.

Some countries, like Singapore and Japan, have already built vertical farms. They hope to solve food shortage problems in crowded cities. In the future, more cities may grow their own food right inside tall buildings.

1. What is “vertical farming”?

   A. Growing food on flat land.

   B. Growing food in tall buildings.

   C. Growing food in the sea.

   D. Growing food in the desert.

2. How much water can vertical farming save compared to traditional farming?

   A. 50% less.

   B. 60% less.

   C. 70% less.

   D. 80% less.

3. Which of the following is NOT an advantage of vertical farming?

   A. It uses less land.

   B. It saves water.

   C. Crops can grow all year round.

   D. It costs very little to build.

4. What is the biggest challenge of vertical farming?

   A. It needs too much land.

   B. It wastes a lot of water.

   C. It costs a lot to build.

   D. Crops only grow in certain seasons.

5. What can we infer from the last paragraph?

   A. Vertical farming is already very common everywhere.

   B. Singapore and Japan have no food problems.

   C. More cities may use vertical farming in the future.

   D. Vertical farming will never be popular.

Passage 1

1. B(细节题。原文第一句:“At the age of 12, Zhang Ming lost his left leg in a car accident.”)

2. B(细节题。原文第二段第一句:“With the help of a prosthetic leg, he learned to walk again.”)

3. B(细节题。原文第三段:“He won two gold medals in the 100-meter and 200-meter races.”)

Passage 2

1. B(细节题。原文第一段:“It is a new way of growing food in tall buildings instead of on flat land.”)

2. C(细节题。原文第二段:“Vertical farms use 70% less water than traditional farming.”)

3. D(细节题。原文第三段:“The biggest problem is the cost. Building a vertical farm is expensive.”

4. C(细节题。原文第三段:“The biggest problem is the cost. Building a vertical farm is expensive.”)

5. C(推理题。最后一段说新加坡和日本已经建造了垂直农场,并说“In the future, more cities may grow their own food right inside tall buildings.”
