My brother Andrew and I were driving home together and started talking. Because of this talk, he took a wrong turn which took us toward a bridge. And we had no way of turning back. Andrew had to pay to cross. He was clearly upset by the mistake and the waste of $4.

As we drove forward,he noticed a shabby (破旧的)black car pulled over to the roadside. A young guy was standing nearby trying to phone someone. I wasbusy trying to find out which way we went next but Andrew pulled over and asked the guy if he needed any help. He did. He had a flat tire.

Andrew helped him change the flat tire. We started getting to know the young man who was from a neighborhood nearby. He said that it had been a bad week for him: earlier a car accident, and now this flat tire. But at that moment he felt “a breath of fresh air”. He kept thanking us because he really would have been stuck if we hadn't come along. After we had finished the job, he pulled out $20 to thank us.“No,”I said.“We were never supposed to even get on that bridge. We took a wrong turn. But now we know why we did it. It was to help you. Thank you for turning our mistake into an opportunity to serve."

What I loved most was watching Andrew through this process. He was able to turn his annoyance over the mistake into positive(正面的)energy. He was able to see a chance to help(which I totally missed!)even in an otherwise terrible situation. That was the bridge we were meant to cross.

Walk down any supermarket aisle and you will see rows of food and drink that claim to help your immune(免疫的) system. We are told that apple is good at battling virus and fighting off illness. And there are a lot other foods also good for our body. The list of “immune boosting” foods often includes berries, mushrooms, green tea, seeds, broccoli, yogurt and foods which are high in specific vitamins.

The problem is that when you dig deeper, you see that most of these statements don’t come from medical researches or serious science. More commonly, they are based on small lab experiments. People use the chemical from the plants, nuts or herbs to improve the health of immune cells, and few of these findings areturned to be anything useful.

So, what do we really need to eat to support a healthy immune system? Only recently have we discovered that the health of our gut(肠胃)has a big effect on immune system. The immune system is in regular contact with our gut, and the gut send signals to control immune activities up or down.

So, what is the health of the gut? The answer is the balance of intestinal flora(肠道菌群).

The good news is that the balance of intestinal flora can be changed through diet. Therefore, it is necessary to keep having healthy products which contain probiotics(益生菌).

Enough exercise and sleep are also very important for immune system.

I don't remember the exact date I met Marty for the first time. Like a lot of people who want to get through a checkout line, I found my thoughts on speed, nothing more. I quickly looked toward the cashier, who was busy receiving money from customers

He was an old man in his sixties. I thought, well, it probably took him a little longer to get the jobs done. For the next few minutes, I watched him. He greeted every customer before he began scanning the goods they picked out. Sure, his words were the usual, “How’s it going?” But he did something different—he actually listened to people. Then he would respond(回应)to what he had said and talk with them briefly(简要的).

I thought it was strange. This old cashier seemed sincere about wanting to know how people were feeling. When customers handed money to him, the cash drawer popped open, and he counted out their change. Then magic happened. He placed the change in his left hand, walked around the counter to the customers, and extended (伸展)his right hand in an act of friendship. As their hands met, the old cashier looked the customers in the eyes. “I want to thank you for shopping here today,”he told them. “You have a great day. Bye-bye.”The looks on the faces of the customers were priceless.

Now it was my turn. I quickly looked down at the name tag on his red waistcoat and it read, “Marty.”

Marty told me how much I should pay and I handed him some money. The next thing I knew he was standing beside me, offering his right hand and holding my change in his left hand. His kind eyes locked onto mine, smiling, and with a firm handshake.

31.

Imagine wearing a magic hat that allows you to write words down just by thinking of them. This is not a sci-fi story, but actual research done by students at Tianjin University.

32.

They used brain-computer interface(BCI,脑机接口)technology to write the character “fu(福)”.“It’s ‘written’ by a robotic(机器人的)arm controlled by our researchers’ minds,”said Xu Minpeng,a professor at the university.

33.

In the lab,two researchers wear caps with sensors(传感器)while their eyes focus on a computer screen to “mind write” the character. After a computer reads signals from their brainwaves,a robot writes the character on red paper. It takes 3 minutes for the researchers to write "fu".

34.

In fact, BCI technology has already been used in several different areas. In 2016,Chinese astronauts Jing Haipeng and Chen Dong used it in the Tiangong Ⅱ space lab. They tested a BCI system in space for the first time. It is hoped that in the future, astronauts can use these systems to do difficult tasks, since it’s not easy for them to move around in space.

35.

BCI technology can also help people with disabilities. For example, people who have lost their hands or arms can use BCIs to write messages and surf the internet. BCIs could also be used in smart homes in the future. Simply thinking “turn on the light” could turn on the lights in your home.

More research on BCI

Elon Musk, founder(创始人)of SpaceX,is also working on BCI technology. Last year,Musk's researchers implanted(嵌入) a chip into the head of a pig. The chip collects signals from the brain and send them to nearby computers wirelessly(无线地). Musk hopes that in the future, humans can use these chips to control things with their minds.

A.BCI can help disabled people.

B.Sensors help computer read signals from human brainwaves.

C.Human minds control robotic arm.

D.BCI is used in space technology.

E.Know more about BCI.

F.A new research by University students.

M: So you say you had your handbag stolen this afternoon at about what time?

W: It must have been around 3:30 pm, but I 'm not sure. Er, oh, I remember. I arrived at the shopping center at 3:00 pm, then about ten minutes later, a man suddenly grabbed my bag and ran off.

M: Was there anything expensive inside the bag?

W: Not really. I have lost a pair of sun glasses and a purse with nothing in it. But the bag itself was an expensive one. It cost me S400.

M: And were you able to remember what the man looks like?

W: I did get a quick look at him. I remember he was tall, strong, and he had dark brown hair. I'm sure I can recognize him if I saw him again.

M: OK,I just need to find out a few more details

M: Sorry, I don't know.

W: Did anybody play ball here just now?

M: No. I didn't notice. But it looks like Bob's. It might belong to him.

W: Why?

M: This ball is orange. He has a ball just like this one. I often play ball with him.

W: Oh. no. I don't think so. Look. There is a name on it.

M: What does it say?

W:"Robert". So it can't be Bob's.

M: Now I'm quite sure it belongs to him. Bob is short for Robert.

W:Oh,really. Let's give it back to him.
