In 16th- and 17th-century Europe, the popularity of peas spread around. The craze around eating these bright green mini-treats in the springtime was so great that the queen wrote once:
“The question of peas continues. The wish of eating them, the pleasure of having eaten them, and the joy of eating them again are the three subjects that we have been discussing for days..”
Peas are among the oldest crops（作物）in human history. Just about anything we call a pea- whether a garden pea, snow pea, chickpea, or peanut - is a member of the larger family called Fabaceae. The peas we eat when fresh, green, and sweet - including garden peas, snap peas, and snow peas - are usually members of the type（种类）called Pisum. Other peas, such as chickpeas and peanuts, belong to some other types.
Sweet pea season is very short. The little round things come up as the winter months end and spring starts; in a few weeks, the leaves are overgrown and the peas not nearly as tasty. In fact, as soon as you pick peas off the vines（藤）, the sugars start changing into other forms, making them less delicious and sweet. It's very difficult to keep peas sweet and fresh. If the queen had a fridge, she might not have spent days losing her mind over these tiny green vegetables.
