  Your memory plays an important role in your life. It helps you remember who you are, where you live, what you have learnt and what you plan to do in the future. 

  So, how can you improve your memory? 

  First, it is helpful to live a mentally active life. Make a point of trying new things. For example, you will exercise your brain if you learn to play a new instrument or learn a foreign language. You can also improve your memory with brain games, such as crosswords, word games and maths puzzles. Techniques like memory linking also work your brain and improve your memory. In memory linking, you make mental connections to help you remember things. For example, you can make up a story to link items in a list so that you will remember them. You will be exercising your brain as well as improving your memory! 

       提高记忆力的方法 

  你的 记忆力(memory)在生活中起着重要作用。它帮你记住你是谁、你住在哪里、你学过什么,以及你未来打算做什么。 

  那么,你要怎样 提高(improve)记忆力呢? 

  首先,保持精神上(mentally)活跃的生活很有帮助。要保证(make a point of)尝试新事物。例如,如果你学习演奏一种新乐器或一门外语,你就能锻炼(exercise)大脑。你也可以用益智游戏来提升记忆力,比如填字游戏、文字游戏和数学谜题。像记忆联想法(memory linking)这样的技巧(technique)也能锻炼大脑、增强记忆。在记忆联想法中,你在脑海中建立联系(link)来帮助记忆。比如,你可以编一个故事把清单里的事物串起来,这样就能记住它们。你既在锻炼大脑,也在提升记忆力! 

  Second, if you live a healthy life, your memory will work better. Healthy eating habits are especially important, and a healthy diet helps maintain a good memory. Research shows that eating green vegetables, nuts, berries, and oily fish can improve your ability to remember things. What’s more, regular physical exercise and getting enough sleep also help improve your memory. 

    第二,如果你过 健康(healthy)的生活,你的记忆力会表现得更好。健康的饮食习惯尤其(especially)重要,健康的日常饮食(diet)有助于维持(maintain)良好的记忆力。研究(research)表明,吃绿色蔬菜、坚果(nut)、浆果和富含脂肪的鱼类可以提高记忆事物的能力。此外,有规律地(regularly)进行体育锻炼和充足睡眠也有助于提高记忆力。 

    Last but not least, it is important to get plenty of rest. Unless you take time to relax, your brain will find it hard to remember things. Besides, if you get too stressed or worried, your memory will become less sharp. Everyone has moments of forgetfulness and memory tends to decline with age. Therefore, it is quite normal for people to experience memory loss as they get older. However, you can maintain and even improve your memory if you exercise your brain, live a healthy life and make time to relax!

    最后但同样重要的是(last but not least),充分休息很重要。除非你花时间放松(relax),否则大脑会很难记住东西。另外,如果你过于焦虑不安(stressed)或担忧,你的记忆力会变差。 每个人都有健忘的时候,记忆力会  往往(tend)随着年龄增长而衰退。因此,人们随着年龄增长出现记忆力衰退(loss)是很正常(normal)的。不过,只要你锻炼大脑、健康生活、抽空放松,你就能维持甚至提高记忆力!

(课文)The power of curiosity

  “Why?” the little girl asks her father. He gives an answer, and she asks again, “Why?” To the parent, these questions may seem never-ending, even a little annoying. But a child's curiosity is very important for the growing mind. 

  Curiosity helps the brain to better take in new information. In a 2014 study, the researcher invited some people to rate their curiosity about some questions before telling them the answers. One hour later, the researcher tested how well they remembered the answers. Results showed that when people were very curious about the fact, they were 30% more likely to remember it. 

  Curiosity also leads to more exciting ideas. In 1918, magician Harry made a big elephant disappear on the stage. In a recent experiment, people were asked how curious they were about Harry's trick and then given a few minutes to design their own magic tricks. It turned out the more curious group came up with more wonderful ideas. 

     好奇心的力量

     “为什么?” 小女孩问爸爸。他给出答案,她又问:“为什么?” 对大人来说,这些问题好像永远问不完,甚至有点烦人。但孩子的好奇心对成长中的大脑非常重要。 

    好奇心帮助大脑更好地吸收新信息。在 2014 年的一项研究中,研究者先让人们对一些问题的好奇心打分,再告诉他们答案。一小时后,研究者测试他们对答案的记忆情况。结果显示,当人们对某个事实非常好奇时,记住它的可能性会高 30%。 

    好奇心还能催生出更多精彩的想法。1918 年,魔术师哈利让一头大象在舞台上消失。在最近的一个实验中,研究者先让人们对哈利的魔术有多好奇打分,然后给他们几分钟设计自己的魔术。结果发现,好奇心更强的那组想出了更棒的点子。

  Curiosity encourages voluntary learning and helps discover career interests. Jeff Armstrong, a successful engineer, designs cars. “As a kid, I was crazy about cars,” says Jeff. “I learned to do simple repairs to the family car. This led me to study engineering.” Dr Fiona Grey, a leading heart doctor, says, “As a girl, I was very curious about how the human body worked, so I studied medicine.” 

  As Richard Feynman said, “Nearly everything is really interesting if you go into it deeply enough.” Therefore, keep a curious mind — keep asking why. You never know where it may lead you!
