One day, the Qi general Tian Ji heard that a talented person had come to Qi from Wei. As he always liked to meet talented people in person, he sent for the man immediately.
But the man arrived in 1. ________ wheelchair (轮椅). His name was Sun Bin (孙膑). He knew a lot about war. His ancestor Sun Tzu was the author of the famous war book, The Art of War (《孙子兵法》).
“What 2. ________ (happen) to you, sir?” asked Tian Ji in surprise.
“The Wei general Pang Juan studied war with me,” said Sun Bin. “I’m smarter than he is, so he’s very jealous (嫉妒的). Look, this is what he did to me.”
Tian Ji treated Sun Bin with great respect. Sun Bin, on the other hand, showed people what he could really do not long after.
Tian Ji often raced horses against King Wei of Qi, and they always did the best of three (三局两胜). But Tian Ji always lost. After watching a couple of 3. ________ (race), Sun Bin figured out why.

一天，齐国将军田忌听说有位贤才从魏国来到了齐国。他向来喜欢亲自结识有才之人，于是立刻派人去请这位先生。
可这位先生是坐着轮椅来的，他名叫孙膑。孙膑深谙兵法，他的先祖正是著名兵书《孙子兵法》的作者孙武。
“先生，您这是出了什么事？”田忌惊讶地问道。
“魏国将军庞涓曾和我一起学习兵法，”孙膑说，“我比他聪慧，因此他十分嫉妒我。你看，这就是他对我做的事。”
田忌对孙膑礼遇有加，而孙膑也在不久后向众人展现了自己的才能。
田忌常和齐威王赛马，比赛采用三局两胜制，但田忌总是输。几场比赛看下来，孙膑找到了其中的缘由。
他们的马分为上、中、下三等，每次比赛都用同等级的马对阵。田忌的马在同等级里总是稍慢一些，所以他从来没有赢的机会。
“那我该怎么办呢？”田忌问道。
“你只要换一种方式安排你的马出场顺序就可以了，”孙膑笑着说，“我保证你能赢。”
几天后，新的赛马开始了。齐王、田忌和孙膑都到场观看这场比赛。
第一回合，齐王像往常一样派出了上等马，可他不知道田忌派出的是下等马。田忌的马远远落在了后面。“你是不是没给马喂饱啊？”齐王有些得意地对自己说道。
可在接下来的两个回合里，田忌的马都率先冲过了终点线。齐王惊得下巴都要掉了：“你是怎么做到的？”
“这全是孙先生的主意，”田忌答道，“其实，您的中等马对阵的是我的上等马……”
