There is a saying in English that says a dog is a man's best friend. Dogs and humans have shared close and loving relationships for thousands of years. A new study suggests that the dog-human connection is so deep that our dogs actually cry for us,or with us.
Jason Bittel,a writer at National Geographic,has felt this kind of connection himself.He recalled a powerful experience he felt when yellow jackets(小黄蜂) were around his dog, Marla. “I found her lying on the ground and shaking with fear, so I picked her up and ran to the bathroom,turned on the shower, and stood there pulling the insects out of her thick black fur with my hands.”Bittel recalled. "I'll never forget the look in her eyes,first of fear, and after the dirty work was done,gratitude(感激） with tears.”
This memory did not return to Bittel from nowhere. It was brought back by the results of the new study.In the study scientists discovered that dogs cry tears of joy when they see their owners after a period of separation. The scientists did the study on 22 dogs. They looked at how the dogs behaved when they were reunited(重聚）with their owners, and with a familiar person who was not their owner. The scientists said that when the dogs saw their owners, they cried.
The researchers put pieces of paper under the dogs' eyes.They used the paper to check if and when the dogs cried. The scientists found that when dogs saw their owners after five to seven hours of separation.they cried. A researcher said he had never heard of animals crying tears in joyful situations. such as reuniting with their owners.“Tears might play a role in the deepening（加深）of relationships."he added. He thinks dogs' tears may make humans love their dogs more.
