Social media has fundamentally changed how we communicate. But has it brought us closer together, or driven us further apart? On one hand, social media makes staying in touch effortless. I can share a funny moment with my cousin in another city instantly. Group chats keep our class connected outside school hours. For introverted students, expressing thoughts through text feels safer than face-to-face conversations. On the other hand, the picture is not entirely rosy. I've noticed that when my friends and I meet in person, we often end up scrolling through our phones instead of talking to each other. We're physically together but mentally elsewhere. Likes and comments have become a substitute for genuine connection. The number of followers matters more than the quality of friendships. In my view, social media is a tool, not a replacement for real relationships. The healthiest approach is to use it to enhance connections, not to escape them. Put the phone down sometimes. Look at the person across from you. Real conversation happens when screens are off.
