Some people think that it is better for people to be unemployed than people to be employed but they do not enjoy. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

题型:同意与否(to what extent do you agree or disagree)

In many labour markets a growing number of people work hard without enjoying what they do, and some argue that they would be better off unemployed. I largely disagree with this position, though it holds in one specific case.

One compelling argument is that a job delivers value that has nothing to do with enjoyment. This is because employment is the main channel through which skills are acquired and kept current: a young accountant who spends three years at a firm he dislikes still learns how an audit is run, how a difficult client is handled, and how to deliver under a deadline. None of this registers as pleasure, yet all of it is transferable, and it is precisely what the next employer pays for.

Apart from the accumulation of skill, unemployment imposes costs that are invisible at the outset. In other words, the loss is not only the salary but the daily structure, the professional network and the standing that make the next opening easier to reach. Otherwise, if a person resigned from every position he did not enjoy, his record would show a series of brief stays, and each gap would be read by the next employer as a risk rather than a rest.

Nevertheless, the original claim has a defensible core. Where a post costs more than it pays — rent, commuting and meals exceeding the wage, or unpaid overtime treated as loyalty — the arrangement is not really employment, and the argument for staying collapses. However, this is less likely to describe the majority of cases, since most dissatisfied workers report boredom and modest pay rather than a net loss; and even then, the sensible response is to search while still employed rather than to leave first.

In conclusion, I disagree that unemployment is preferable, mainly because work builds the skills that idleness quietly erodes, as well as because a thin CV is harder to explain than a dull job. The remedy for a bad job is a better one, not no job at all.

Staying in a job one dislikes carries an ==opportunity cost==, but leaving carries ==skill depreciation==: the years spent outside the labour market are years in which competence goes stale. What makes the difference is whether the work leaves anything ==transferable== behind.

高分搭配:register as pleasure(算得上“享受”)/impose costs that are invisible at the outset(一开始看不见的代价)/the argument for doing sth collapses(支持某事的理由就站不住了)

A dull job is rarely a ==sunk cost== so long as it improves the ==career trajectory==; what actually protects ==employability== is continuous employment, not continuous satisfaction.

Staying carries an opportunity cost, but leaving carries skill depreciation. What decides the question is whether the work leaves anything transferable behind — a bad job can be endured, an unpaid one cannot.
