Talc from Luzenac’s Trimouns mine in the French Pyrenees is used in many everyday products, including chewing gum, olive oil, and agricultural products. Although food-related uses account for only a small share of sales, they are important specialist markets where manufacturers value consistent quality and are reluctant to change suppliers.

In chewing gum, talc acts as a chemically inert filler in the gum base, helping create the right texture and preventing the gum from sticking during production and packaging. Olive-oil processors add small amounts of talc while stirring crushed olives. It absorbs natural emulsifiers and helps release larger oil droplets, improving extraction without changing the oil’s taste, colour, or composition.

A newer use is protecting fruit crops from sunburn and heat stress. Sprayed onto fruit, a specially prepared talc powder lowers surface temperatures and can reduce sunburn damage, while avoiding the high water use of misting systems. Trials on Granny Smith apples showed sunburn reductions of up to 60 per cent, and the product is now being marketed to growers, with potential applications for grapes and other crops.
