The Longest Journey
Every autumn, a small white bird called the Arctic tern begins one of the longest journeys in the animal world. The bird weighs only about 100 grams — less than a cup of rice — but each year it flies from the top of the Earth almost to the bottom, and then back again.
Arctic terns spend their summer in the far north, where endless daylight and rich food make a perfect home. When the northern winter comes near, the birds rise into the sky and fly south — not to a warm country next door, but all the way to the Antarctic, at the other end of the planet. In spring, they turn around and fly north again. Scientists have tracked young terns with tiny recorders and found that some fly more than 90,000 kilometres in a single year.
How do such small birds manage such a huge journey? Experts say the tern's body is built for the air. Its long, narrow wings let it glide on the wind instead of always beating, which saves a lot of energy. Terns also feed on the way, diving into the sea to catch small fish, so they do not need to carry much food. Most amazingly, they seem to find their way using the sun and the Earth's magnetic field, as if they were carrying an invisible map.
The tern's journey teaches scientists something about rest, too. Because the birds live through both polar summers, they see more daylight each year than any other animal on Earth. To survive the trip, terns rest on the sea surface for short times, but they never truly stop for long. As one researcher wrote, "The Arctic tern does not belong to a place. It belongs to the journey itself."

2. B "even older ______ our school itself" 考比较级搭配 older than「比……更老」→ than。then「那时」、over「超过」(不与 older 搭配此结构)、from「从」均不符合。
4. C "______ a short poem about its thick trunk" → wrote「写了一首短诗」,与"添加树龄、写名牌"的制作过程连贯。
5. B "______ the tag high enough on the trunk" → hanging「把牌子挂得足够高」,下文 Li Lei 站上椅子正是为了挂高。
6. D "two classmates ______ the chair carefully so that he would not fall" → held「扶住椅子」,目的状语"以免他摔倒"印证。
7. A "stepped back to ______ our work" → admire「退后几步欣赏成果」,与下文"老树自豪地戴上名牌"的欣慰语气一致。
8. B "like a gentleman ______ a badge" 考现在分词作后置定语 → wearing「佩戴着徽章的绅士」,比喻树挂上名牌的样子。
9. C "younger children often ______ questions about the tree's age" → ask questions「提问」,好奇的低年级学生会问树多老。
10. B "every old tree ... would get ______ own tag" → 主语 every old tree 为单数第三人称、指物 → its own tag「它自己的名牌」。their 用于复数(every 单数不符);his / her 指人不妥。
11. B 第一段 "The bird weighs only about 100 grams — less than a cup of rice" → 约 100 克,选 B。
12. C 第二段 "fly south — not to a warm country next door, but all the way to the Antarctic" → 南方的夏天在南极度过,选 C。
13. A 第三段 "Its long, narrow wings let it glide on the wind instead of always beating, which saves a lot of energy" → 长而窄的翅膀乘风滑翔省力,选 A。
14. D 第三段末 "they seem to find their way using the sun and the Earth's magnetic field, as if they were carrying an invisible map" → "看不见的地图"比喻太阳与地磁场这套导航系统,选 D。
15. A 末段 "they see more daylight each year than any other animal on Earth" → 燕鸥每年见到的日照比任何动物都多,选 A。
