The Riddle Box

Last month, a small wooden box appeared on the shelf of our class library. On the front, someone had written: "Take a riddle. Leave a riddle." Inside were folded pieces of paper, each with a riddle on one side and the answer upside down on the other.

Nobody knew who had put the box there. The writing was neat, but it did not match any student's handwriting that we recognised. Every morning, new riddles appeared, and every afternoon, the box was emptier. Soon, solving riddles became our class's favourite break-time activity.

To keep the game going, students began to write their own riddles. Some were classic brain teasers: "What has hands but cannot clap?" (A clock.) Others were jokes about school life that made everyone groan and laugh at the same time.

Each Friday, our monitor collects the best riddle of the week and reads it out before the class meeting. The winner gets a small paper star stuck on the box. So far, eleven stars shine on its lid.

Last week, our Chinese teacher, Ms Xu, finally ended the mystery. The box, she admitted, was her idea. She had read a report about a school in Finland where riddle boxes help students relax between lessons. "I wanted to give you a reason to talk to each other," she said, "instead of only looking at your phones."

We were surprised, but not disappointed. The box has stayed, and new riddles keep arriving. Some of them are no longer written by students—teachers from other classes have started adding their own. The riddle box has quietly become something bigger: a small wooden bridge between people.

11. What do we know about the riddle box at the beginning of the story?

A. It was put there by an unknown person.

B. It cost the class ten yuan to buy.

C. It stayed empty for more than a week.

D. It belonged to the class monitor.

12. What did students do to keep the game going?

A. They bought new boxes for other classes.

B. They wrote riddles of their own.

C. They asked Ms Xu to provide more riddles.

D. They copied riddles from their textbooks.

13. What does the underlined word "groan" in paragraph 3 probably mean?

A. Laugh loudly.

B. Complain playfully.

C. Shout angrily.

D. Keep silent.

14. What prize does the weekly winner get?

A. A new wooden box.

B. A free library book.

C. A paper star on the box lid.

D. A photo on the school website.

15. Why did Ms Xu start the riddle box?

A. She wanted to test how fast students could solve puzzles.

B. She hoped students would talk to each other more.

C. She planned to write a report about Finnish schools.

D. She needed a way to fill the class meeting time.

1. B "announced that..."

3. D "the best part of a match" 指比赛「最精彩/最重要的部分」,说明分数对我们的意义。

4. A "take risks" 为固定搭配「冒险」。make/give/put 与 risks 均不搭配。

9. B "Scores tell us who is better" 分数告诉我们谁更棒(better 比较级,指水平高低)。
