Afraid of Physics in Grade 8? Start with Words and Reasoning

“I seem to understand the teacher, but I don’t know how to solve the problems myself.”“Perhaps I’m just not talented at physics.”
If your daughter feels this way, do not rush to judge her ability. Being afraid of physics does not mean she cannot learn it. Struggling now does not decide her future.
Our approach brings language-based thinking into maths and science. We begin with words students understand, help them make sense of the problem and clarify the relationships, then move towards diagrams, reasoning and calculations.

Do Not Let a Gender Stereotype Become a Barrier
Difficulty with physics should not be explained by gender. Some students struggle to understand questions; others confuse concepts or memorise formulas without knowing when to use them. We need to identify the difficulty, not label the student.
Physics introduces a new way of learning. Students need to understand what something is, why it happens and under what conditions a principle applies. This takes both guidance and independent practice.
2. What Does Language-Based Thinking Look Like?

This approach does not mean memorising formulas like textbook passages. It means using reading comprehension, clear expression and logical analysis in science. The objects, conditions and relationships described in a problem provide the starting point for solving it.
We guide students through four steps: understand the question, explain the relationships, draw the situation and use the relevant principles to calculate and check the answer.
For example, if two people travel the same distance and one takes less time, who has the greater average speed? We first ask students to explain the relationship in words, then connect it to the formula: average speed equals total distance divided by total time.
A formula then becomes a concise expression of a relationship, rather than a set of symbols to memorise. Understand, explain and then calculate. For students who find words helpful, this can open a door to physics.
3. Connect Abstract Ideas with Everyday Life

Sometimes students are intimidated by unfamiliar terms and symbols. Sound, mirrors, hot water and cycling all offer opportunities to explore physics. We start with familiar experiences and gradually introduce the concepts.
When learning about sound, we might ask what mainly changes when a person speaks more loudly, or how we recognise a familiar voice through a door. These questions lead into loudness, pitch and timbre. Observation comes first, followed by concepts and practice.
4. Move from Following an Explanation to Solving Independently

Following a teacher’s explanation is different from mastering a skill. After an explanation, we ask students to describe the reasoning without looking at the answer, solve a version with different numbers and consider whether the method still applies when the question changes.
After understanding average speed, students should be able to calculate it independently. Travelling 1,500 metres in 5 minutes gives an average speed of 5 metres per second, after converting the time to 300 seconds. They should be able to explain the method as well as get the answer right.

5. Find the Cause Behind Each Mistake
Correcting a mistake means more than copying the answer. Did the student misunderstand the question, confuse a concept, miss a relationship, mix units or make an arithmetic error? Practice should address the specific cause.
Instead of simply saying “Be more careful,” we give precise feedback: “You missed the condition that the distances were equal,” or “You needed to convert minutes into seconds.” Corrections become useful when students know what to do differently.

6. Build Progress One Step at a Time
For a student who already fears physics, we begin with manageable tasks: explaining an observation, describing a concept and solving a basic problem independently. As the foundation becomes stronger, we introduce more complex questions.
We want confidence to grow from real progress: identifying information without prompting and understanding why an equation applies. Each independent success can help “I’m afraid of physics” gradually become “I can give it a try.”

7. Parents Can Help Through Everyday Conversations
Instead of asking, “Why can’t you do something so easy?”, try: “At which step did you get stuck?”, “Which problem did you solve on your own today?” or “What will you watch out for next time?” Students need to feel comfortable admitting confusion before we can help them resolve it.
A Clear Approach and Patient Practice

At Xueli Education, we put this approach into practice through careful reading, clear explanations, diagrams, experiments, logical reasoning and calculations. Independent practice helps us check whether students can apply what they have learned.
The starting point depends on each student’s textbook, homework and test papers. We identify difficulties, plan suitable practice and strengthen the foundations before moving forward. If your child fears physics or struggles with homework, you are welcome to message us and discuss their recent work.
Before judging a child’s ability, help them find a manageable next step. Language-based thinking can open the door; scientific reasoning and steady practice help them move towards understanding and independence.
