The 20th Asian Games
The 20th Asian Games was held in Nagoya, Japan. As a grand sports event, it carries the spirit of unity, progress and respect among Asian countries. With the theme “IMAGINE ONE ASIA”, the Games drew about 11,000 athletes from 45 Asian countries and areas. They took part in different sports and wrote new stories of Asian sports culture.
Unlike earlier Asian Games, the 20th event put more effort into green and sustainable development. The organizing committee took many low-carbon steps during the whole Games. Most competition halls were improved from old public sports buildings instead of being newly built. This greatly reduced resource use and building waste. Besides, solar power and energy-saving devices were widely used. A complete waste sorting and recycling system was set up, making the Games a good example of environmentally friendly international sports events.
More than sports matches, the Asian Games offered a good chance for cultural communication. During the 16-day event, many cultural shows, folk art performances and youth exchange activities were held. Athletes and visitors from different cultures communicated with each other closely. They broke down cultural barriers and built up friendship. An official from the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) said, “The Asian Games are far more than a sports competition. It acts as a bridge linking Asian nations, letting people on this continent share dreams and work for common progress.”
Many new records were made in this Games. Quite a few Asian records and even world records were broken in swimming, track and field, gymnastics and other sports. Young athletes became the main players. They showed strong will and competitive spirit. Their energy fully explained the Asian Games spirit: unity, devotion and self-improvement.
When the closing ceremony came to an end, the Asian Games torch was passed to the next host. However, the spiritual treasure the Games brought will not disappear. It encourages Asian athletes to keep challenging themselves in future games and helps improve regional cooperation and cultural exchange across Asia.
