M: Sorry. I’m late. It’s so thick that I could hardly see through it, so I drove very slowly.
W: It’s OK. No one expected such a heavy fog today. After all, the forecast said it would be fine today.
M: Would you like to go to the musical The Other Side? It’s on this Thursday and Friday.
W: This Thursday is Children’s Day. I’ve promised to take my nephew to a barbecue. But I can make it the next day.
M: OK.
W: Hello, there. I want to check out. My room number is 809.
M: OK. Here’s your bill.
W: $30 for international calls, but I didn’t make any international calls.
M: Oh, sorry. That bill is for 908. Wait a moment. I’ll get you the right one.
W: Hey, honey. Are you off work yet?
M: Nope, why? Are you home already?
W: Yes, I’m at the door, but I left my keys at the office.
W: Hey, Lee. I heard you’re learning English through an app. Is it easy to follow?
M: Yes, and the lessons are pretty interesting too. Right now I’m taking a travel course on it.
W: Sam, our guests are running late. They want us to order for the table.
M: Wow, the pressure is on. Well, we have 6 people. How about 4 cold dishes and 4 main dishes, plus some noodles or rice?
W: Sounds good. John is vegetarian, so we should get things he can eat too.
M: Of course. Let’s order some vegetables and tofu dishes. OK, so far so good.
W: Do you think they can handle spicy food?
M: Maybe a bit. But let’s just do mild spicy. And we’ll make sure to get lots of cold beer.
W: Great.
W: Barry, how’s your math final?
M: You know, I never got an A before in math tests. But this time I got one. It’s unbelievable.
W: Wow, congratulations!
M: Ha ha. Thanks. Would you like to have dinner together tonight? It’s my treat!
W: Oh, you don’t have to.
M: Come on. It is all because of your help and support. Let’s go straight to the nearby cafe.
W: OK then. By the way, do you have any plans for the holiday?
M: I decided to have a good rest. I would like to find myself some TV series. And you?
W: I’ve signed up for an overseas camp. I’ll be exploring in a forest.
M: Sounds interesting.
W: How did you get your start as a comic, Thomas?
M: When I was younger, my mom and her friends liked to play cards and she would ask me to tell them jokes. So I’d be performing in our living room. That happened for years. When I got to middle school, teachers literally would bargain with me that if I would be quiet in class, they would let me talk for 15 minutes at the end of class. That became a good deal, too.
W: That’s really helpful. And what do you remember from your experience playing Bibby in Atlanta?
M: There was fear every day at every moment. I remember asking my wife the night before on the phone, and I said, “I don’t even know how loud I’m supposed to talk.”
W: It turned out to be particularly beloved. You performed greatly in it. And what can audiences expect from you next?
M: Well...
W: Ronny, so good to see you again! It’s been way too long. You look great by the way.
M: Right back at you, Janet! This get-together is great. Thanks for arranging it.
W: It’s too bad that Ethan couldn’t join us. He moved to China last month.
M: Yeah. Now that I’ve worked at other places, I have to say our old team was the best.
W: Agreed. We just really worked well with each other. Speaking of these “other places”, how’s your new job?
M: Not bad. It’s a new industry. I make good money, and the leaders are nice. But I always have to work overtime to deal with all the tasks.
W: Well, every place has its pluses and minuses. Anyway, enough about work. Should we get some drinks?
M: Now you’re talking. I’m in the mood for some coffee.
I decided to stop shopping online for two months to see how it would affect my personal spending. In the first week, I found it really hard to refuse the temptation from emails and online photos of new products from some of my favorite shops. Every time I saw something I wanted, I said to myself: Is this something you absolutely need in life? And without a doubt, the answer was always no. Once I broke my habit of spending 30 minutes or an hour each night before bed seeing what was for sale online, I was able to focus on activities that were meaningful and didn’t cost me a penny. And once I stopped shopping online, I realized way too much money was going towards clothing and shoes. For example, last month I spent nearly $1,000 on clothing and shoes, and that’s almost one third of my monthly salary! I feel better knowing not only where my money is going, but also that I’m not filling my home with items I don’t need.
