The Origin and Development of Museums
Today, museums are public places for people to enjoy art, history and science collections. But museums were not always open to ordinary visitors.
The earliest museum‑like collection appeared in ancient Egypt. Rich rulers gathered valuable objects, artworks and strange natural samples inside their palaces. These collections were only for the rulers themselves and noble guests. Common local people had no right to visit them.
In the 17th century, European wealthy families built many private cabinets of curiosities (奇珍收藏室). They stored ancient relics, animal samples and hand‑made artworks. These rooms were the early forms of modern museums. Still, most of them were closed to the public.
The first large public museum in the world opened in 1759 in Britain, the British Museum. It was built for all people, not just rich nobles. Anyone could come and view collections for free. This set an important example for other countries.
During the 19th century, more public museums appeared across Europe and North America. Governments began to raise money to build museum buildings. Museums slowly added educational functions. They held public lectures and printed simple guide materials for visitors.
Nowadays, modern museums keep changing. Many open online digital exhibitions so people can enjoy collections at home. More interactive activities are designed to attract young visitors.

Sea Turtles
Sea turtles are ancient ocean animals that have lived on Earth for more than 100 million years. Seven different kinds of sea turtles can be found across the world’s warm oceans. They spend almost their whole life in seawater, but the female turtles must return to sandy beaches to lay eggs.
When it is time to produce eggs, mother turtles swim for long distances back to the beach where they were born. They climb onto the sand at night, dig deep holes and lay dozens of eggs inside. After covering the eggs with sand, they go back to the sea. Baby turtles will break out of eggs after about two months.
New‑born baby turtles face great danger. Once they come out of sand, they must hurry toward ocean waves. Birds, crabs and other wild animals hunt for little turtles on the beach. Only a very small number of baby turtles can finally reach the sea and grow into adults.
Now sea turtles are facing serious threats from human activities. Plastic waste floating in oceans may hurt or kill turtles. Many turtles get caught in fishing nets by accident. Beach development also destroys their nesting (筑巢) beaches. Some beaches are filled with bright lights at night. The lights confuse baby turtles, making them move away from the ocean instead of toward waves.
Wildlife groups are working hard to protect sea turtles. Workers watch nesting beaches, keep eggs safe, clean ocean rubbish and advise fishermen to use safer fishing tools. With joint efforts, people hope these ancient ocean animals can survive into the future.

The Early History of Bicycles
❶ People had long dreamed of human‑powered land transport. The earliest bicycle‑like machine appeared in 1817 in Germany. It had two wheels but no pedals (脚踏板). Riders pushed their feet against the ground to move forward. People called it the “running machine”.
❷ Later inventors added new parts to improve the vehicle. One big‑wheel bicycle became popular around 1870. Its front wheel was huge while the back wheel was very small. This design could reach higher speed. However, it was really dangerous. Riders easily fell off from the high seat.
❸ A safer bicycle design came out in 1885. Both wheels were made the same size. Pedals and chain drive were fixed on the bike. This new type was named the “safety bicycle”. Ordinary men and women could ride it without too much risk.
❹ Another important improvement was rubber air‑filled tyres (轮胎). Before that, bike wheels used solid hard rubber. Riding on stone roads felt extremely bumpy. Air tyres made the ride much smoother and more comfortable.
❺ As bicycles became safer and more comfortable, lots of people chose them for daily travel. Factories produced large numbers of low‑cost bicycles. Bicycles were no longer toys only for rich people. They changed common people’s way of moving around cities.
