第一部分阅读(共两节,满分50分)
第一节(共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
Pine cones (松果) have a vital job: keeping pine tree seeds safe through winter. They close their “scales”(鳞片) tightly over the seeds to protect them from cold, wind, ice and hungry animals, and open up only when the weather is warm and dry enough to release seeds, ensuring they spread in good conditions. This simple experiment lets you observe how temperature and wetness affect pine cone scale movement in your own kitchen.
Objective | Observe how temperature affects pine cone size and scale movement. |
Materials | 3 cones, a marker, a ruler, a bowl of ice water, a foil-covered baking tray, an oven |
Procedure | 1. Label pine cones A/B/C, measure and record their initial length and size. |
2. Put cone A in ice water for 2 mins, dry it and record its new size.
3. Place cones A and B on the baking tray. Bake at 120℃ for 45 mins.
4. Take out the tray and let the cones cool completely.
5. Measure all three cones again after cooling.
6. Compare the final measurements, noting that cone C functioned as the control group.
7. Analyze the data to explain the size changes and which cone changed the most. |
Pine cone scales change shape as plant fibers absorb or release water depending on temperature and wetness. Cold, wet conditions make the fibers expand, which makes the scales close tightly; warm, dry conditions make the fibers shrink (萎缩), letting the scales open and release seeds. This experiment demonstrates how pine cones adapt to their environment to protect and spread seeds — a brilliant example of nature’s engineering.
1.What does the experiment aim to find out?
A.Animals’ effect on pine cone growth.
B.Impact of temperature on pine cones.
C.Different ways to keep proper wetness.
D.Methods to store pine tree seeds in winter.
2.Why is cone C used in the experiment?
A.To serve as a comparison.B.To record the original size.
C.To test the role of baking.D.To examine icy water’s function.
3.Where is this text most probably taken from?
A.A DIY craft website.B.An outdoor nature handbook.
C.A kids’ science magazine.D.A professional research paper.

Moving to a new city can be an anxious experience. It’s often difficult to develop a sense of connection when you’re unfamiliar with a place’s traditions and history. Now that I’m a new resident of Pittsburg, one way I’ve found to engage with my new environment is through the art murals (壁画) found around town.
Whenever I take a walk around the Old Town area, I stop to admire the mural at Heritage Park Plaza (HPP). As a newcomer, I find myself identifying with one section of the mural in particular. It shows a newly arrived family with their belongings, transitioning (过渡) into a photograph of a wedding. To me, this symbolizes establishing general roots — something I hope to do here in Pittsburg as well.
Another mural I enjoy is located on the side of the Ace Hardware building on Railroad Avenue. This colorful piece honors the indigenous heritage (土著遗产) of the Pittsburg area, specifically the Bay Miwok people who lived here long before European settlers arrived. The mural acknowledges the lives of these indigenous groups, whose cultures were reshaped by newcomers. Today, these cultures coexist, a reality the mural beautifully illustrates.
Lastly, there’s an amazing mural on the history of the Latino identity, located on the back of the Cardenas Markets near the highway entrance. The mural records the pre-history, transformation, and ongoing cultural presence of the Latino community in Pittsburg. As someone who shares in that heritage, I find it deeply meaningful to see it proudly displayed as visitors enter the town. It’s a visual welcome that makes me feel connected to the city and its values.
These murals have become my way of bonding with Pittsburg, offering me a sense of belonging and helping me appreciate the town’s rich history. They serve as both reminders of the past and invitations to become a part of the ongoing story of this community. I encourage everyone to walk through their city, or any new town, and explore public art to better understand the community’s identity.
4.What does the mural at HPP inspire the author to do?
A.Learn about Pittsburg’s historical events.
B.Take photographs of particular art murals.
C.Build lasting family bonds in Pittsburg.
D.Protect the traditions of older residents.
5.What does the Ace Hardware mural illustrate?
A.The integration of different cultures.
B.The cruelty of European settlement.
C.The restoration of indigenous customs.
D.The history of the Ace Hardware building.
6.What aspect of the author does paragraph 4 reveal?
A.Her original Latino background.
B.Her talent for appreciating murals.
C.Her contribution to the local community.
D.Her role as a tour guide for Latino visitors.
7.What is the best title for the text?
A.A Travel Journal of Pittsburg’s Murals
B.Pittsburg’s Traditions Preserved in Art
C.Exploring the Artistic Side of Pittsburg
D.Engaging with Pittsburg Through Public Art

The Age of Information is mushrooming, perhaps even bulging. If you tried to download all the data available today, you’d need more than 180 million years to do so. But you are wrong to assume that all this information would stimulate a boost of innovation to match the output of data. Indeed, the last time we found ourselves in a period of significant innovation, was more than 120 years ago, in the Age of Insight.
Innovations, both big and small, often occur as a moment of insight, which typically involves quiet signals deep in the brain, just under the surface of awareness. Anything that helps us notice quiet signals, such as taking breaks between meetings, simplifying learning approaches or avoiding digital distractions, can increase the number of insights. However, it’s becoming more challenging to find those signals with the ballooning use of technology, stuffing every moment with an endless supply of content.
Besides, we also want to increase the quality of them — to be able to sort through big new ideas and find the ones that have real value. Launched in 2015, the Eureka Scale (尤里卡量表) allows us to assess the strength of our insight experiences on a five-point scale, which is marked by intense emotions, motivation, memory advantage, aftershocks, and following ideas. The Scale combines these five variables into a single value and allows us to define the importance of a new idea. The level-5 insight, involving the richest emotion, motivation, and lasting impact, holds the greatest significance. Contributive to measuring and improving individual and organizational performance, the Scale can be used to measure the impact of different kinds of work environments and learning approaches on participants’ growth.
For organizations to benefit from another age of insight, it’s not enough to access more data or increase the number of insights we generate. It’s indeed essential to make space for the biggest ideas to emerge from all the information. Using the shared language of the Eureka Scale will enable better decision-making toward practical and competitive outcomes. And if we’re to enter a new age of insight, we must design our environments to allow for the best insight possible to surface.
8.What does the underlined word “bulging” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?
A.Stabilizing.B.Exploding.C.Shifting.D.Collapsing.
9.According to the passage, how can the amount of insights be increased?
A.By making due pauses in your work schedule.
B.By consuming boundless social media content.
C.By avoiding distracting quiet signals in your brain.
D.By adopting additional training and coaching approaches.
10.What can be inferred from the passage?
A.The Eureka Scale controls the influence of our insights.
B.Possessing minimal emotional responses is a level-5 insight.
C.Both the quantity and quality of insights are essential to innovation.
D.A breakthrough has been made in innovation due to a wealth of information.
11.What is the author’s attitude towards the current environment for innovations?
A.Uncertain.B.Optimistic.C.Tolerant.D.Dissatisfied.

Misunderstanding food date labeling is common and educational communications are needed to improve consumer understanding, according to a new study.
Does it mean “gone bad — throw it out,” or “might not taste as good as it could anymore?” Food date labels (e.g., “USE By August 16”) can play an important role in helping consumers make informed decisions about food, and ultimately prevent unsafe consumption and waste of food. Researchers surveyed 2,607 adults in the United States to assess consumer understanding of the 2-date labeling system and explore the relative effectiveness of educational messages in increasing understanding.
“Our study showed that a vast majority of consumers say that they use food date labels to make decisions about food and say they know what the labels mean,” said Catherine Turvey, the lead researcher. “Despite confidently using date labels, many consumers misinterpreted the labels and continued to misunderstand even after reading educational messaging that explained the labels’ meaning.”
Less than half (46 percent) of study respondents knew that the “BEST If Used By” label specifically indicates that food quality may decline after the date on the label. Less than one-quarter (24 percent) of study respondents knew that the “USE By” label means that food is not safe to eat after the date on the label.
Researchers explored if framing the messages with values, like saving money or avoiding waste, would impact the effectiveness of messages at increasing consumer understanding. None of the seven value frames tested was significantly more effective at increasing understanding than another, but all messages significantly increased consumers’ general understanding of the labels.
After viewing educational messages, 37 percent of consumers still did not understand the specific meaning of the “BEST If Used By” label and 48 percent did not understand the specific meaning of the “USE By” label.
“Responses to the survey suggest that date labels are so familiar that some consumers believe they are straightforward, or common sense despite misunderstanding the labels,” said Ms. Turvey. “Misplaced confidence and the familiarity of date labels may make consumers less attentive to educational messaging that explains the food industry’s labeling system.”
12.What problem did the researchers find with many consumers?
A.They showed no interest in food date labels.
B.They admitted they knew little about food date labels.
C.They pretended to know much about food date labels.
D.They didn’t realize they misinterpreted food date labels.
13.What does the “BEST If Used By” label indicate?
A.The food is unsafe to eat after the date.B.The food may not be as good after the date.
C.The food must be thrown out after the date.D.The food mustn’t be sold after the date.
14.According to Ms. Turvey, how can we increase consumers’ understanding of date labels?
A.By making the labels less familiar to consumers.
B.By changing the food industry’s labeling system.
C.By creating educational messages about the labels.
D.By drawing consumers’ more attention to the labels.
15.What does the new study involve?
A.Consumer behavior.B.Science education.
C.Shopping strategies.D.Consumption levels.

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
As humans, we all have different emotional states, known as moods. We may feel happy, sad, angry, anxious or excited at different times. Well, moods are not just for individuals. 16 Now, let’s talk about an expression that describes ways we understand the general mood of a group of people. That expression is “to read the room”.
When you read the room, you use your powers of observation to learn the general mood or emotional state of people in a particular setting. You may then act in a way that is similar to that mood. You match it. Let’s say you are in a silly mood — laughing a lot and making jokes. Then you enter a serious work meeting. 17
You can tell someone else to read the room if he seems clueless about the mood of a group of people. 18 Used in this way, it can either be funny or insulting — depending on the situation and how we say the phrase.
19 People are seated around a table enjoying good food and conversation. Then, your friend Betsy brings up a very serious topic like a historic battle where many people died. Suddenly the tone changes. The atmosphere goes from happy to serious. You could say, “Betsy, read the room! No one wants to talk about that now.”
The expression “read the room” is all about being observant. 20 People who can read the room know the right atmosphere, tone, and mood and are able to fit in.
A.Reading the room is a skill.
B.Suppose you are at a dinner party.
C.You will influence the moods of others.
D.Dining together is an important occasion.
E.Groups of people can also share a collective mood.
F.It is a way to show that he is behaving inappropriately.
G.You may need to read the room and change your behavior.

The most common structural method found in ancient wooden architecture in China is the mortise and tenon joint, or sǔn mǎo in Chinese, 36 (extensive) employed in buildings, furniture, and various other wooden components. This technique reflects 37 ancient craftsmen discovered through continuous refinement and trial and error.
The findings from the Hemudu culture site in the 1970s, 38 (date) back about 7, 000 years and situated in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River, reveal the earliest examples of mortise and tenon usage. Of course, this structural technique is not unique 39 China. Evidence of similar mortise and tenon construction has also been found in Germany and Egypt.
The application of the mortise and tenon structure is extremely extensive, including connections between surfaces, points, 40 the combinations of components. Through the complicated interlock of convex and concave (凸凹的) elements, it forms 41 inseparable and remarkably stable wooden structure.
Beyond its solidity, the ancient Chinese also 42 (apply) mechanical principles in the mortise and tenon buildings, adapting their practices based on local conditions. 43 (couple) with the rigidity, load-bearing capacity, and energy-absorbing properties of wood, traditional Chinese wooden constructions exhibit a certain degree of earthquake 44 (resistant). The design and the integration of various carving techniques have continuously improved 45 (enhance) the artistic appeal of these joints.

My father works as a taxi driver. Every single day, he drives along the busy urban streets, picking up and dropping off various passengers. The job is tiring and barely well-paid, yet he never utters a single complaint. Instead, he always returns home with a weary smile and small jokes to brighten up the whole family. “A passenger tipped me with a half-eaten apple today!” he would joke, bringing laughter to my mother and me.
Back in fifth grade, I handmade a sunflower keychain for him. It looked rough with faded paint. Nevertheless, Father cherished it deeply. He fastened it to his waist belt and took it wherever he went. As years rolled by, the keychain grew worn and nearly lost all its color, yet it still hung on his belt, swaying gently with every step he took.
Currently a high schooler, I am constantly buried in piles of homework and exams. Last week, I suffered a terrible failure in my math exam, leaving me feeling extremely defeated. Upon arriving home, I threw my schoolbag aside and sank into silence. Father instantly spotted my low spirits and asked softly what had happened. Refusing to reply, I felt annoyed at his repeated comfort offers. The accumulated frustration and embarrassment finally exploded. “Leave me alone!” I shouted rudely at him.
My harsh words hung awkwardly in the room. Father froze on the spot, his smile fading away completely. For a brief moment, he stared at me in shock and hurt, confused by my sudden outburst. Without any explanation, he turned around and walked slowly to his bedroom. The soft click of the closing door stung my heart far more fiercely than a loud slam.
That night, I tossed and turned in bed, consumed by great guilt. I quietly stepped out of my room and walked to the living room. There lay his belt on the sofa, with the faded sunflower keychain resting on it, silently reminding me of my foolishness.
