CAMBRIDGE & REAL EXAM · TASK 2 NO. 517 | LumiWrite
"Nowadays, many people spend less and less time at home. What are the reasons and what are the effects of this trend on individuals and on society?"
people have less time to communicate with their families → family relationships become weaker → people may feel lonely
People are busy with their work, so they have less time to stay at home.
home becomes little more than a site of rest, squeezed between work, transport and sleep
less time at home → less meaningful interaction with family → weaker emotional support → greater risk of loneliness or stress
less time at home → weaker family and neighbourhood networks → less informal support → greater pressure on public services
- Introduction:
- Body 1(Reasons):
- Body 2(Effects):
Individual(weaker family bonds, loneliness, chronic stress)+ Society(weaker neighbourhood ties, reduced community cohesion, greater pressure on public services)。 - Conclusion:
It is increasingly common for people to spend noticeably less time at home than previous generations did. This is hardly a trivial change in personal routine: it reflects deeper shifts in economic and cultural life. After outlining the main drivers of this trend, the essay will examine its repercussions for individual wellbeing and for society as a whole.
One primary driver is the restructuring of working life, and this is most visible in large cities. Urban professionals routinely face long hours, often compounded by lengthy commutes, while rising housing costs push many into overtime or second jobs. In such circumstances, home becomes little more than a site of rest, squeezed between work, transport and sleep. A second, more cultural cause is that private dwellings have lost their monopoly on recreation. Cafes, gyms, co-working spaces and 24-hour retail now supply the sociability that once unfolded around the family hearth; meals are often eaten out or delivered, and family hobbies have given way to scheduled classes and fitness sessions.
These changes carry significant costs. At the individual level, scarce domestic time tends to erode intimate family bonds; parents and children may inhabit the same household yet share little of each other's daily lives, which can fuel loneliness and chronic stress. For society, the effects are equally visible. Neighbourhood bonds, historically sustained through doorstep conversations and shared spaces, are among the first casualties; when people treat home mainly as a base between external commitments, informal networks weaken, and unpaid care that once occurred naturally within households is shifted onto under-resourced public services. Although a busy life outside the home can offer autonomy, these benefits look thin when weighed against growing isolation and social fragmentation.
In conclusion, the drift away from domestic life is rooted in economic pressure and the changing geography of leisure. Although the trend is unlikely to reverse quickly, its negative consequences justify a serious effort to restore work-life balance and protect shared domestic time. Unless this balance is addressed, its effects on mental health and community cohesion are likely to intensify.
• home becomes little more than a site of rest, squeezed between work, transport and sleep把“工作太忙没时间在家”变成了一个极具画面感的具体生活场景。
• private dwellings have lost their monopoly on recreation没有直接说“外面娱乐选择多”,而是抓住更深层的变化:过去由家庭承担的休闲功能,现在越来越多地被外部空间替代。
