I was a shy girl. I didn’t even like to answer the telephone for fear I’d have to talk to somebody I didn’t know. I enjoyed the loneliness of exploring nature. However, at school I had to spend all day in the company of others. My escape was reading. I spend a lot of time studying and was rewarded with good grades. My only failure was Spanish — I’d get all As on my written work and tests, but Ds and Fs on the spoken part.
Eventually I went to college. During my third year of college, I had enough of being shy and determined to change my outlook and behavior. One day while at school, I noticed an advertisement for positions on the local classical music radio station. I had grown up listening to classical music, and I could easily pronounce names such as Tchaikovsky, Albinoni, and Chopin.
I had absolutely no background in radio, and absolutely no hope of getting the job. The idea of talking to thousands of listeners in “radio land” terrified me. However, I luckily survived the interview. I was given brief descriptions of symphonies (交响乐) and a public service announcement to read, and a list of composers’ names to pronounce. It wasn’t hard for me. I left the recording session (录音时段) with a sense of relief and a sense of accomplishment. About two weeks later I actually landed the job. It was a challenging job, but I grew to enjoy it greatly. I began to feel comfortable talking to people.
Although I now spend many hours each week talking with people, I’m still basically a quiet person. Perhaps it is my soft voice and my quiet nature that helps draw people out as they respond to my questions as I interview them. My former shyness is a fortune, as I can relate to people who feel discomfortable when they talk to newspaper reporters. I still enjoy moments of loneliness and the peace found in nature. But I’m also glad I decided to make a change in my life that has opened many doors and opportunities that I never knew existed.
24. What do we learn about the author?
A. She didn’t like reading.
B. She enjoyed shyness in nature.
C. She wasn’t interested in music.
D. She didn’t work hard enough.
25. How did the author feel before the interview?
A. Very excited.
B. Pretty confident.
C. Highly confused.
D. Extremely anxious.
26. What does the author later think of her quiet personality?
A. It makes others feel less comfortable.
B. It is beneficial for her challenging job.
C. It prevents her being a newspaper reporter.
D. It draws a negative response from audiences.
27. The text mainly focuses on the author’s ________.
A. desire to find her true self
B. feeling about being a radio hostess
C. story of exploring the meaning of life
D. experience and feeling of overcoming shyness
B 25. D 26. B 27. D

根据第三段“The idea of talking to thousands of listeners in “radio land” terrified me.(一想到要在“广播世界”与成千上万的听众交谈,我就感到害怕)”可知,在面试前,作者想到和成千上万的听众交谈就感到非常紧张害怕。故选D。
根据最后一段“My former shyness is a fortune, as I can relate to people who feel discomfortable when they talk to newspaper reporters.(我以前的害羞是一种幸运,因为我能理解那些在与新闻记者交谈时感到不自在的人)”可推知,作者从事这份挑战性的工作是有益的。故选B。

When we see a person in trouble, the first idea that comes to our mind is to lend a hand. But what if we see an animal in trouble, does the same rule apply?
This question was raised after a group of penguins (企鹅) were saved from an icy gully (峡谷) in Antarctica. It was filmed for the BBC wildlife series Dynasties. The film crew were anxious when they saw that a group of penguins had fallen into a gully and been trapped with their young. They built a slope (斜坡) so that a few of the penguins could save themselves.
The case has taken the international media by storm. Viewers watching this film sighed in relief. “I’m so glad. I understand not taking action directly, but a helping hand isn’t bothering, right?” viewer Kathryn Shaw said on her Facebook.
However, others think human interference (干涉) is unnatural. “You can’t have sunshine throughout your life. To have done anything else would only make matters worse.” said the show’s creator David Attenborough, according to TheTimes.
In this case, however, Mike Gunton, the executive producer of the series, said that this was a one-off situation. “There were no animals going to suffer by interfering. You weren’t touching the animals and it was just felt by doing this …They had the chance not to have to keep slipping down the slope.” he told the BBC.
Such cases are familiar to Paul Nicklen, wildlife photographer for National Geographic. He told Metro, “If it’s ever a predator (捕食者) situation, no matter how gut-wrenching, you stay out of the way. Even when you’re watching a male polar bear eat a baby bear.”
“There’s no rule book in those situations. You can only respond to the facts that are right there in front of you.” Will Lawson, the show’s director, told Daily Mail.
28. What has led to a heated media discussion?
A. The rescue of penguins from a gully.
B. People’s various opinions on penguins.
C. Some penguins’ sufferings in a gully.
D. Ways of filming the series Dynasties.
29. Who holds a positive attitude towards human interference?
A. David Attenborough.
B. Will Lawson.
C. Paul Nicklen.
D. Kathryn Shaw.
30. What best explains the word “gutwrenching” underlined in Paragraph 6?
A. Making one confused.
B. Making one heartbroken.
C. Putting one in danger.
D. Making one amazed.
31. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Necessity of Lending a Hand to Animals
B. Protect Animals From Dying Out
C. Human Interference on Dangerous Animals
D. Help Animals in Trouble or Not
A 29. D 30. B 31. D
根据第二段的“The film crew were anxious when they saw that a group of penguins had fallen into a gully and been trapped with their young. They built a slope (斜坡) so that a few of the penguins could save themselves.(当摄制组看到一群企鹅和它们的幼崽掉进沟里被困在一起时,他们非常焦虑。他们建了一个斜坡,好让几只企鹅能自救。)”和第三段的“The case has taken the international media by storm.(这起案件引起了国际媒体的广泛关注。)” 故选A。
根据第三段的““I’m so glad. I understand not taking action directly, but a helping hand isn’t bothering, right?” viewer Kathryn Shaw said on her Facebook.(“我很高兴。我理解不直接采取行动,但伸出援助之手并不麻烦,对吧?”观众Kathryn Shaw在她的脸书上说。)”可推知,Kathryn Shaw对帮助动物是很赞成的,故选D。
30. 词句猜测题。根据上文语境大家对干涉动物的行为有不同观点,结合下文的“you stay out of the way. Even when you’re watching a male polar bear eat a baby bear(你给我闪开。即使你在看一只雄性北极熊吃掉一只幼熊)”可知,这是个捕食的情景,无论你是多么的心碎,你都不能干预。结合四个选项可知,gutwrenching意为“令人痛苦的”,和Making one heartbroken(令人心碎)意思相近,故选B。
31. 主旨大意题。阅读文章,并结合第一段“When we see a person in trouble, the first idea that comes to our mind is to lend a hand. But what if we see an animal in trouble, does the same rule apply?(当我们看到一个人有麻烦时,我们想到的第一个想法是伸出援手。但是,如果我们看到一只动物陷入困境,同样的规则也适用吗?)”和第二段“This question was raised after a group of penguins (企鹅) were saved from an icy gully (峡谷) in Antarctica.(这个问题是在一群企鹅从南极洲的冰沟中获救后提出的。)” 因此,本文的最佳标题应为D选项“Help Animals in Trouble or Not(是否帮助有困难的动物)”。故选D。

Chinese cuisine is widely known and enjoyed all around the world. Who doesn’t long for a favourite Chinese dish? But there is one interesting concept concerning Chinese food which is almost unheard in the West, and which is becoming increasingly ignored by the youth of the East — the ancient custom of tonic food.
Tonic food is food which is consumed to improve one’s well-being or avoid sickness. For instance, it was once the custom for new mothers to eat a sesame oil hotpot every day for the first month after giving birth. It was believed that this dish would benefit the muscles, reduce pain, improve circulation, stimulate sweating, and warm the body. Some foods, such as goat meat and spinach (菠菜), are seen as “hot”, while others, such as Chinese cabbage and radishes (小萝卜), are seen as “cold”. One should be careful not to eat too much of either “hot” or “cold” food. However, how much “hot” or “cold” food one should eat depends on the time of the year, how the food is prepared and what it is prepared with, and the individual’s health.
The custom of employing tonic food for a healthier life also influences the catering industry. Chinese herbal medicines, such as the wolfberry (枸杞子), can be found on many a restaurant menu, either added to fruit tea or as a beneficial addition to a dish. These herbs attract customers, such as overworked office staff in need of a modest pick-me-up.
So, whether you need to boost your strength with a large helping of chicken soup, or increase your mental powers with some fish soup, you may find that this ancient Chinese custom could be just the tonic you were looking for.
32. What is the present situation of tonic food?
A. It is catching less attention.
B. It is enjoyed by many young people.
C. It is well known worldwide.
D. It is becoming increasingly popular.
33. What is believed to benefit new mothers?
A. Chinese cabbage.
B. Fruit tea.
C. Sesame oil hotpot.
D. Fish soup.
34. Which of the following best explains “catering” underlined in paragraph 3?
A. Medicine.
B. Restaurant.
C. Education.
D. Fashion.
35. What is the author’s purpose of writing this passage?
A. To present the charm of Chinese cuisine.
B. To show the popularity of tonic food.
C. To introduce Chinese tonic food.
D. To tell the differences between hot food and cold food.
A 33. C 34. B 35. C

由第二段中的“For instance, it was once the custom for new mothers to eat a sesame oil hotpot every day for the first month after giving birth. (例如,过去,新妈妈们在产后第一个月每天吃麻油火锅是一种习俗)”可知,麻油火锅对于新妈妈有好处,故选C项。
34. 词句猜测题。由第三段中的“The custom of employing tonic food for a healthier life also influences the catering industry. (为了更健康的生活而使用补品的习俗也影响了catering业。中草药,如枸杞,可以在许多餐厅的菜单上找到,或者添加到水果茶中,或者作为一道菜的有益补充)”可知,许多餐馆的菜单上都有枸杞等中草药,说明为了健康的饮食,补品也在影响着餐饮行业。catering意为“餐馆(Restaurant)”,catering industry为餐饮业,故选B项。
35. 推理判断题。由第一段中的“But there is one interesting concept concerning Chinese food which is almost unheard in the West, and which is becoming increasingly ignored by the youth of the East — the ancient custom of tonic food.
