Despite widespread bans on handheld phone use while driving, a significant number of drivers continue to risk hefty fines and accidents. This essay will first explore the psychological and practical reasons behind this behaviour, then propose a multi-pronged solution involving legal enforcement, technological aids, and public education.
The persistence of this illegal habit stems mainly from two factors. Psychologically, many drivers suffer from overconfidence and the “it won’t happen to me” illusion. They believe that glancing at a notification or sending a quick reply takes only a second, underestimating how drastically reaction times drop during that distraction.

1. risk hefty fines –
2. multi-pronged solution –
3. the “it won’t happen to me” illusion – “不会发生在我身上”的侥幸心理
4. glancing at a notification –
5. addictive nature of smartphones –
6. compulsive urge –
7. overrides rational judgment –
8. monotonous commutes –
9. random roadside checks –

There is a growing argument that the study of ancient culture is anachronistic and should be sidelined in favour of contemporary, career-focused subjects. I strongly disagree. Although modern skills and scientific literacy are undeniably important, ancient culture remains a vital component of a rounded education because it cultivates identity, critical thinking and creativity.
It is reasonable to concede that the pressures of a crowded curriculum and the economic imperative to prepare students for the job market mean that schools prioritise STEM and vocational training. Time constraints and assessment systems can make it difficult to allocate extensive resources to classical studies, and some may view them as less immediately utilitarian.

2. sidelined —
3. career-focused subjects —
4. a rounded education —
5. cultivates identity —
6. critical thinking —
7. crowded curriculum —
8. economic imperative —
9. vocational training —
