Jake Pinnick, the 36-year-old from the United States, has an unusual story of “Becoming Chinese”. Now he is known as a foreign coach at Wudang Mountain in Hubei province, teaching martial arts (武术) to students from around the world.
As a fan of Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee, Pinnick always wanted to learn “real kung fu from its roots (根源)”. Attracted by a video of Wudang martial arts online, he finally made up his mind to come to China in 2010.
Life in China was not easy at the beginning. The training was hard, but he never gave up. By repeating every move countless times each day, he gradually realized that martial arts are never supposed to compete against or win over others. Instead, they help achieve balance between inner spirit and outer strength, just as his master once told him, “Develop virtue before practising martial arts.”
After finishing his five-year training at Wudang Mountain, Pinnick returned to the US with his Chinese wife and their daughter. However, he found himself “stuck between Chinese and American culture”. So in 2018, he decided to return to Wudang Mountain to teach and spread Wudang culture.
Over the past years in China, Pinnick has become completely used to the local life. He now enjoys drinking hot tea instead of coffee. He is also proud of his Chinese name, Li Zigen, given by his master.
Pinnick hopes to deepen understanding between different cultures through his efforts. With encouragement from his wife, he started posting videos online about martial arts in 2020. In late August, a British TV host named Kirstie Allsopp found herself in a media storm, because she posted on social media that her son, 15-year-old Oscar, and his 16-year-old friend went on a three-week trip by train to many famous cities like Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam, Berlin and Madrid. Kirstie ended her story by saying if we worry too much, our kids will be scared too. But if we trust them, they can do amazing things.
Her post got two million views. Some people agreed with her. However, others thought it was wrong for teens to travel without adults. This caused a lot of talk, which made the headlines (成为重要新闻) in Britain and even caught the attention of UK social services. People focused on when it’s okay for kids to travel alone without adults.
Travel experts say it’s difficult to decide how old someone should be before they can travel alone. It really depends on many factors like how mature (成熟的) they are, their travel experience, the rules of the country they’re going to, and how safe that place is.
Carolyn Pearson, who runs a company that helps business travelers stay safe, said, “I think the skills teens learn from traveling by themselves for three weeks might be more valuable than what they learn in three years of school.”
People who support young travelers to explore the world believe it can be really good for them, even if it seems risky. Cole Robinson, a filmmaker from Manchester, says his first solo (单独的) trip to Barcelona at 16 was a big moment in his life. It made him work in jobs that let him see the world.
In fact, when young travelers are going somewhere, a consent (同意) letter from parents is important. Don’t forget travel insurance (保险), which is also important for beginners.” Travel insurance companies have an interest in solving their customers’ problems, “a travel expert said,” so it will be a way to protect your child in his first solo adventure.”
33.Why did Kirstie face a social media storm?

D.Whether a solo trip can help young teenagers grow.
35.What can we know about Carolyn and Cole?
A.Both of them work in a travel company.B.Carolyn is against Cole’s view.
C.Neither of them supports Kirstie.D.They share the same view.
36.What is the passage mainly about?
A.Different popular ways for teenagers to travel.
B.Whether kids should be allowed to travel alone.

Iceland is the most eco-friendly country in the world. Sitting on a geologic (地质的) hot spot with lots of volcanic (火山的) activities, Iceland has plenty of geothermal (地热的) energy. In fact, it is Icelanders who have truly won this title. They made decisions to use clean energy and learned how to make good use of their natural resources.
An Icelandic baker named Rafn Hilmarsson bakes hverabrauð (hot-springs bread), just as his mother and his grandmother did before. Every day, Rafn takes the bread dough (面团) to his oven—a hole dug near the town’s lake. The hole is about one foot deep, where temperatures are near the boiling point. Rafn covers the hole with sand. After 24 hours, he returns to dig out his fully baked bread, hot from its earthly oven.
Most homes are heated using geothermal water from underground. But that wasn’t always the case. Until the 1970s, most people in Iceland heated their homes using oil, which was expensive. So the government put in pipes that brought hot water from beneath Earth’s surface to Icelanders’ homes. Those same pipes carrying hot water to heat homes were also used to help melt (融化) snow and ice from city sidewalks.
In this way, Iceland ended the dependence on oil for heating. In Reykjavik, Icelanders’ heating costs would be five times as high if they still depended on oil. Iceland uses geothermal energy and water energy to produce 99 percent of the country’s electricity. Icelanders are using clean energy to power everything from fishing boats to cars and buses driving around Reykjavik.
Iceland now shares its practice about geothermal heating with the rest of the world. The president of the country travels to other countries, explaining the advantages of geothermal power. Engineers and geologists from Iceland have helped scientists in Germany, the Philippines, China, and the United States learn more about using Earth’s heat for their own projects. The plenty of cheap, efficient (高效的) energy makes Iceland a possible choice for big companies like Microsoft and Google to run the mega-computers that power the World Wide Web.
37.Why is Iceland the most eco-friendly country in the world?
A.Because it has a lot of volcanic activities.B.Because Iceland has plenty of geothermal energy.
C.Because its people are good at making hot-springs bread.D.Because it uses clean energy like geothermal energy widely.
38.What can we learn about Rafn’s way of baking bread?
A.It depends on natural heat and takes a full day.B.It is a modern creative way invented by himself.
C.He uses special hot spring water to boil the dough.D.He digs a deep hole and keeps fire burning inside.
39.What change did Iceland make in the 1970s?
A.It started to use oil to heat most homes.
B.It increased people’s heating costs five times.
C.It built pipes to bring hot geothermal water for heating.
D.It stopped using geothermal energy to melt snow on sidewalks.
40.What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A.Iceland only keeps its geothermal technology to itself.
B.Iceland’s geothermal power is expensive but highly efficient.
C.Microsoft and Google have set up the mega-computers in Iceland.
D.Iceland offers help to other countries in using geothermal energy.
第二节阅读填空(共5小题;每小题1分,满分5分)
阅读短文及文后A〜E选项,选出可以填入41〜45各题空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。
Do you often find yourself putting off homework until the last minute? You know it’s important, but you just can’t seem to get started. This is a very common problem called procrastination. 41
Why do we procrastinate? Usually, it’s not because we are lazy. Often, it’s because the task feels too big, too boring, or we are afraid of doing it badly. 42
One simple and effective method to fight procrastination is called the “Five-Minute Rule”. Tell yourself: “I will just work on this for five minutes. After five minutes, I can stop if I want to.” 43 Once you start, you often build “momentum”, and it becomes much easier to continue.
Another great strategy is to break a huge task into tiny, clear steps. 44 Instead of writing “Finish history project,” write down “Open my history book,” “Read page 1,” or “Write the title.” Finishing these small steps gives you a feeling of success and pushes you forward.
The most important thing is to just begin. Don’t wait for the “perfect moment” or for you to “feel ready.” That perfect moment may never come. 45 Even a small step is still a step forward. Just start, and you will be surprised at what you can achieve.
A.Our brain finds it much easier to accept a small action than a huge project.
B.The hardest part of any task is simply taking the first action.
C.So, what can we do to beat this bad habit?
D.It’s when we avoid doing a task that we know we should be doing.
E.This trick works because starting is always the biggest challenge.
