Cultural Communication in the Information Age: A Deep Root for a Wide Reach

In the information age, the spread of traditional culture often begins with a moment of surprise. Many young people were amazed by the dazzling skills of this intangible cultural heritage, yet they knew little about the historical memory, festive customs, and spiritual values behind it. This example raises an important question: should the communication of traditional culture focus more on breadth or depth? In my view, breadth is necessary as an entrance, but depth should be the ultimate goal.

Admittedly, breadth matters greatly in today's digital world. Without visibility, even the most valuable cultural tradition may remain silent in a corner. Short videos, livestreams, social media platforms, and creative visual designs allow traditional culture to reach people across regions, ages, and social groups. What a powerful thing it is when an old craft suddenly appears on millions of young people's screens! In this sense, wide communication can break the stereotype that traditional culture is distant, outdated, or difficult to understand.

However, popularity alone is far from enough. If audiences only remember the speed of the scissors, the beauty of the colors, or the excitement of a viral video, traditional culture may be reduced to a temporary performance. The danger is that people may consume culture as entertainment without truly understanding it. Paper-cutting, for example, is not merely a technique. Its patterns often carry wishes for happiness, fertility, reunion, and protection; its use is closely connected with festivals, family life, and local history. Once these meanings are ignored, the soul of the tradition is weakened, even if the video receives millions of likes.

Therefore, the better choice is to use breadth as a bridge and depth as a destination. Not only should creators show the beauty of traditional culture, but they should also explain the stories, values, and historical contexts behind it. A short video can attract attention, while a longer documentary, an online course, a museum exhibition, or a school activity can deepen understanding. These forms, which are more patient and educational, can help young people move from "I have seen it" to "I understand it" and finally to "I want to protect it."

More importantly, deep communication can make traditional culture alive rather than decorative. When young people understand why a pattern is cut, when it is used, and what emotion it expresses, they are more likely to respect the craft and even recreate it in modern life. Tradition should not be locked in the past, but neither should it be emptied by the pursuit of traffic. The real success of cultural communication is not how many people click "like" in one week, but how many people are willing to remember, interpret, and pass on the culture in the long run.

In conclusion, traditional culture in the information age certainly needs breadth, because attention is the first step of communication. Nevertheless, if we must choose the more important direction, depth deserves greater emphasis. Only when wide reach is supported by deep understanding can traditional culture avoid becoming a fleeting spectacle and become a living source of identity, creativity, and confidence.

1. Breadth is necessary as an entrance, but depth should be the ultimate goal.

Breadth is necessary as an entrance 表示宽度是入口depth should be the ultimate goal 表示深度才是最终目标

A is necessary as..., but B should be the ultimate goal.

Speed is necessary as a tool, but quality should be the ultimate goal.

Innovation is necessary as a method, but responsibility should be the ultimate goal.

2. Not only should creators show the beauty of traditional culture, but they should also explain the stories, values, and historical contexts behind it.

Creators should not only show the beauty of traditional culture, but they should also explain...

这个句型:Not only + 助动词 / 情态动词 / be动词 + 主语 + 谓语, but 主语 also + 谓语.

Not only should schools teach knowledge, but they should also cultivate character.

Not only does technology change our lifestyle, but it also reshapes the way we think.

3. These forms, which are more patient and educational, can help young people move from "I have seen it" to "I understand it".

which are more patient and educational 修饰前面的 These forms,补充说明这些传播形式更有耐心,也更有教育意义

Museums, which preserve cultural memory, should become more attractive to young visitors.

Traditional festivals, which carry shared emotions, still matter in modern society.
