Reading Passage 3
You should spend about 20 minutes on Questions 27-40, which are based on the passage below.
THE HISTORY OF GLASS
Glass is one of the oldest man-made materials, with evidence of glass production dating back to around 3500 BCE in Mesopotamia. Early glass was not clear, and it was used mainly for decorative objects and beads. It was considered a luxury item, and only wealthy people could afford it. The techniques for making glass were closely guarded secrets, passed down through families of craftspeople.
The first major breakthrough in glassmaking came in the 1st century BCE, when Roman craftsmen invented glassblowing. This technique made glass production much faster and cheaper. For the first time, ordinary people could buy glass objects, such as cups, bowls and bottles. Roman glass was traded across Europe, North Africa and the Middle East, and glassmaking centres sprang up in many regions.
After the fall of the Roman Empire, glass production declined in Europe. But the craft continued to develop in the Middle East. By the 10th century, glassmakers in Venice had learned Middle Eastern techniques and began producing high-quality clear glass. Venice became the centre of European glassmaking, and Venetian glass was famous across the continent for its beauty and clarity.
The Industrial Revolution brought another huge change to glass production. New machines allowed glass to be made in large quantities at a low cost. In the 20th century, the invention of laminated and tempered glass made glass safe for use in buildings and cars. Today, glass is used in everything from smartphone screens to solar panels, and it remains an essential material in modern life.
