Which is harder: English or Japanese in the Gaokao?
From the perspective of exam difficulty and the learning experience of most Chinese test-takers,
Gaokao Japanese is generally considered easier to score high on than Gaokao English. This judgment is mainly based on Japanese having significant advantages in vocabulary size, grammar system complexity, question formats, and natural affinity for Chinese students.
Core Difficulty Comparison
In terms of syllabus requirements and exam design, Gaokao Japanese has lower demands than English in multiple aspects, offering candidates a clearer path to score improvement.
Lighter Vocabulary & Grammar Load
The core vocabulary requirement for Gaokao Japanese is about 2,000–2,500 words, far below English's 3,500–4,000 words. Meanwhile, the number of core grammar points in the Japanese syllabus is around 80+, with a relatively clear system; English has over 200 grammar points, including complex difficulties such as subordinate clauses and subjunctive mood.
Exam Structure & Difficulty Setting
The Japanese Gaokao paper has relatively simple question formats, with a large proportion of objective questions (multiple choice), and the essay is usually a prompted or applied writing task. English, on the other hand, has more complex formats, including seven-choose-five and continuation writing, which demand higher comprehensive ability. Additionally, Japanese listening is slow-paced (~120 words/min) with everyday scenarios, while English listening is faster (~150–200 words/min) and may include academic contexts.
Unique Advantage for Chinese Test-Takers
Japanese contains a large number of kanji-based vocabulary, giving Chinese students an innate advantage in reading and comprehension — they can sometimes even "guess" some answers. This significantly lowers the barrier to language entry and exam-oriented reading.
