Textbook Relay Originated from Big Ben Wins Warm Popularity
The popular Chinese textbook relay started in late March, 2026 in London and quickly became a hit online. It was inspired by the Big Ben picture on Chinese junior high English textbooks and has attracted lots of young travellers.
A Chinese overseas student created this meaningful activity. On March 23, she put her old English textbook beside Elizabeth Tower and invited other Chinese visitors to take photos with the real clock tower, write notes on the book and pass it on to the next person.
After she shared the story on social media on March 24, the activity went viral in just a few days. Soon the relay spread to world-famous sights including the Egyptian Pyramids, Sydney Opera House and Roman Colosseum. Participants hide relevant textbooks at scenic spots for strangers to pick up and carry on the relay.
The activity carries rich emotional and cultural meanings. It awakens teenagers’ childhood memories, helping them turn textbook knowledge into real-life experience and realize long-cherished dreams. Meanwhile, the old textbooks serve as emotional ties for overseas Chinese to ease homesickness. The trend also shows young Chinese’s growing cultural confidence and spreads gentle Chinese romance around the globe.
