The best science books inspire a sense of wonder and make you amazed at the incredible world we live in. Here are four of them to feed your imagination.

A Short History of Nearly Everything by Bill Bryson

How did it all begin? And how did we get here? Combining history and science, the book offers a comprehensive yet entertaining answer to these questions. Bill Bryson takes the reader on an impressive journey through the greatest scientific discoveries in history. It explains scientific topics in a vivid way, but it’s quite a long read.

Thing Explainer by Randall Munroe

How do helicopters work? Or cells? Randall Munroe explains how things work using illustrations and only the most common 1,000 words in English. It will shift your approach to explanation. So, next time explain how something works rather than merely call it by its name. However, additionally providing more technical terms might have enhanced the understanding and learning experience.

Ask an Astronaut by Tim Peake

What does it feel like to fly into space? How do you prepare for it? Astronaut Tim Peake answers all the questions you never knew about going into space. The book gives insights into the cutting-edge science, as well as the day-to-day life on board of the International Space Station. Its question and answer format makes it easy to quickly find answers, but it can become less appealing due to the lack of descriptive language.

Deep Time by Riley Black

Want to know the story of our planet? Riley Black takes us on a journey, in the order of time, through the geological (地质的) events that have shaped our planet. The fascinating high-quality images are supported by easily digestible explanations of key historical moments. It also expands on key concepts in geology, astronomy and biology. Yet, measuring the size of some objects on the photos is difficult due to the lack of a scale bar (比例尺).

Dasia Taylor has juiced about three beets in the last 18 months. The root vegetables she’s found provide the perfect dye (染料) for her invention; suture (缝合) thread that changes color, from bright red to dark purple, when a surgical wound becomes infected .

The 17-year-old student at Iowa City West High School began working on the project in October 2019, after her chemistry teacher Carolyn Walling shared information about state-wide science fairs with the class. As she developed her sutures, she won awards at several regional science fairs, before advancing to the national stage.

Healthy human skin is naturally acidic, with a pH around five. But when a wound becomes infected, its pH goes up to about nine. Changes in pH can be detected without electronics;many fruits and vegetables are natural indicators that change color at different pH levels.

“I found that beets changed color at the perfect pH point,” says Taylor. Bright red beet juice turns dark purple at a pH of nine. “That’s perfect for an infected wound.”

Next, Taylor had to find a suture thread that would hold the dye. She found ten different materials, including standard suture thread, and tested them, for how well they picked up and held the dye, and whether the dye changed color when its pH changed. She found that a cotton-polyester blend (涤棉混纺) checked all the boxes. After five minutes under an infection-like pH, the cotton-polyester thread changes from bright red to dark purple.

Kathryn Chu, the director of the Center for Global Surgery at Stellenbosch University in South Africa, focuses on improving equitable access to surgical care. “I think it’s amazing that this young high school scientist was inspired to work on a solution to address this problem,” the surgeon writes in an email. “A product that could detect early surgical site infections would be extremely valuable.”

4Why did Dasia Taylor begin to work on her invention?

ATo enter science fairs.BTo sell root vegetables.

CTo make juice to drink.DTo do her teacher’s research.

5What is the purpose of paragraph 3?

ATo explain how human body functions well.

BTo provide scientific support for the invention.

CTo prove the possibility of avoiding infection.

DTo show the significance of the suture thread.

6What did Dasia Taylor do to get a suture thread to hold the dye?

AShe produced a new thread.BShe turned to Kathryn Chu.

CShe tested different materials.DShe mixed ten thread materials.

7What can we know about Kathryn Chu?

AShe shows inventors a new research direction.

BShe was inspired by Dasia Taylor to contribute.

CShe once overlooked the access to surgical care.

DShe speaks highly of Dasia Taylor’s invention.

A new report published in the Journal of Sleep Research found no evidence that using the snooze(打盹儿)function on your alarm negatively affects sleep and cognitive(认知) processes. And while learning sleepiness and shorter sleep were more common in those who snoozed, it could even have benefits if used shortly.

The research even found that a brief snooze period could relieve sleep mertia(惯性), the unclearness and performance or mood decline that occurs when waking up, without completely disturbing sleep. It could also improve one’s cognitive function compared to completely waking up after the first alarm goes off.

The findings indicate that there is no reason to stop snoozing in the morning if you enjoy it, at least not for snooze times around 30 minutes. In fact, it may even help those with morning unclearness to be slightly more awake once they get up,”said the researcher Tina Sundelin of Stockholm University

The research was based on two studies with the first observing the waking habits of 1,732 adults. Most of the adults (69%) reported using an alarm's snooze function or occasionally setting multiple alarms. Snoozing ranged from 1 to 180 minutes, according to the study, with the average period being 22 minutes per morning. The second study analyzed 31 confirmed regular snoozers and found that for every 30 minutes they snoozed, they lost six minutes of sleep—for a net gain of 24 minutes. However, researchers did not find any clear effects on moodstresstiredness, hormone levels or overnight sleep quality.

The report also found people who snooze tended to be at least six years younger than those who dont, and those who were identified as night owls were almost four times more likely to snooze than early birds. Snoozers also had a slightly shorter sleep time on workdays, 13 minutes less on average, compared to those who never snooze.

Despite these studies finding that a certain amount of snooze time won’t damage your health, it remains key to get enough consistent sleep to avoid serious health consequences.

8. What may a short snooze period result in according to the new research?

A. Better sleep inertia. B. Disturbed sleep processes.

C. A good mood. D. A poor cognitive function.

9. What is Tina Sundelin's attitude to short snoozing in the morning?

A. Critical. B. Tolerant.          C. Doubtful.              D. Favorable.

10. How was the research carried out?

A. By consulting different experts. B. By collecting and analyzing data.

C. By reviewing related records online. D. By doing experiments on students.

11. What does the text suggest us do about sleep?

A. Try to be an early sleeper. B. Sleep more on weekends.

C. Snooze as much as possible. D. Get enough consistent sleep.

D

In the threatening trouble of climate change, growing commercial crops on solar farms is a potentially efficient use of agricultural land that can both increase commercial food production and improve solar panel performance and longevity(寿命), according to a new Cornell research.

“We now have, for the first time, a physics-based tool to estimate the costs and benefits of co-locating solar panels and commercial agriculture in terms of increased power conversion efficiency and solar-panel longevity, ” said lead author Henry Williams, a doctoral student in Cornell Engineering.

“There is potential for agrivoltaic (农业光伏) systems-where agriculture and solar panels coexist-to provide increased passive cooling through taller panel heights, more reflective ground cover and higher evapotranspiration (蒸散) rates compared to traditional solar farms,” said Max Zhang, professor in the Sibley School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, “We can generate renewable electricity and conserve farmland through agrivoltaic systems.” In New York, for example, about 40% of solar farm capacity has been developed on agricultural lands, while about 84% of land suitable for solar development is agricultural, according to a previous research study from Zhang’s group.

The engineers showed that solar panels mounted over vegetation reveal surface temperature drops compared to those built over bare ground. Solar panels were mounted 4 meters above a cotton crop and the solar panels showed temperature reductions by up to 10 degrees Celsius, compared with those mounted a half-meter above bare soil.

“As you decrease the solar panel operating temperature, you can increase efficiency and improve the longevity of your solar panels, ” said Williams, “We’re showing double benefits. On one hand, you have food production for farmers, and on the other hand, we’ve shown improved longevity and improved conversion efficiency for solar developers.”

“Up to this point, most of the benefits from agrivoltaic systems have been around areas with abundant sunshine, ” said Zhang, “This research is taking a step toward evaluating the application of agrivoltaics in climates representative of the Northeastern U. S. in relaxing the land-use competition it faces.”

12What does the new Cornell research convey?

AGrowing commercial crops can relieve climate change.

BIt’s costly to improve solar panel performance and longevity.

CCommercial agriculture can increase power conversion efficiency.

DThe coexistence of solar panels and commercial crops is mutually beneficial.

13Why does the author list the figures in paragraph 3?

ATo show the promising future of agrivoltaics.

BTo indicate the lack of solar farms in New York.

CTo tell agricultural lands are based on solar farms.

DTo demonstrate agricultural farms are more developed.

14What can be inferred from the last paragraph?

AThe Northeastern US is rich in agricultural lands.

BHot climate zones are ideal for developing agrivoltaics.

CThe research made a breakthrough in land-use competition.

DThe application of agrivoltaics in Northeastern US proved practical.

15Which is a suitable title for the text?

AApproaches to Tackling World Climate Change

BMethods of Increasing Agricultural Production

CAgrivoltaics Have Been Well Received in the US

DGrowing Cropsat Solar Farms Generates Higher Efficiency

After the annual college entrance examination, students have to fill out their applications. Not knowing what choices they really want, some are seeking the Internet for advice, while others are clearly arranged by their parents.University or city, school or major, interest or prospect?1

1. Choose a major solely based on money

The mistake happens when you're choosing a major merely based on money. 1You should choose a major that you are driven to succeed in, even if you won't make as much money.

2. A hobby is placed as your priority

1 Actually, when you choose to study your hobby—to build your life around it—it can lose its appeal, and then it won't be relaxing anymore. Hence, a hobby is never mean to be your priority. However, choosing a major based on your passion means pursuing what you love despite all the work that goes into it. You willnever get sick of it as time progresses.

3. Choose a major by feeling instead of research.

Being interested in a major is a start, but don't stop there. 1 If you know someone in the field or with that major, ask them for some input. The idea of a specific major tend to be better than the reality for students who enter it blindly.

4. My parents want me to choose this major

The opinions of your friends and family aren't something to ignore, but the choice is ultimately yours. You're the one doing the work and earning the degree. Remember that college is an investment of both your time and money. The only way to get the best outcome is to shape your own future.

2Every major has its horror stories. Never take the “easy” road when it comes to your future.

A.Often, people confuse their hobbies with their passions.

B.Passions soothe you and drive you crazy at the same time.

C.Honestly, there is no such thing as an “easy” major anyway.

D.Investigating the field will help you know what major is right for you.

E.Here are several mistakes you should avoid when applying for a major.

F.However, if you're motivated enough to succeed, you can earn the degree.

G.You need to also consider your passions, your dislikes, and most importantly, your happiness.

The Best Bake Sale

Ms. Hawkins had been longing to take her class on a field trip to a museum, but was bothered by the lack of funds. Therefore, she decided to put students' heads together and work out a plan.

After sharing her problem with students, she was overjoyed to find all the students chattering excitedly about the solutions. One of her students said, “We could have a car wash.” Another student suggested, “Let's have a students-against-teachers football match and sell tickets."

Thankful but concerned, Ms. Hawkins said," The weather might be too cold for a car wash or a football match." Suddenly, Tina, the class monitor, raised her hand and advised, “Why not sign up for the school's bake sale to raise money?"

"Sounds great,” said Ms. Hawkins, followed by the agreement echoing in the classroom. Excited and passionate, Ms. Hawkins decided to run a test. "Prepare your baking samples at home and bring them tomorrow, so that we can try the food before the school's bake sale next week.” announced Ms. Hawkins.

The following day, students arrived with their samples. All their passion and excitement were soon extinguished(浇灭)by the unexpected result. From the cookies which contained no sugar to muffins that were overcooked, the students were gradually overwhelmed by a surge of disappointment and dismay(沮丧).“Wish our customers won’t complain about it” Tina forced a smile, sighing in a half joking manner. It was a moment of frustration and unease for everyone.

It suddenly occurred to Ms. Hawkins that they could invite her old friend, Jasmine Wells, who owns a bakery in town, to give them a baking lecture. Jasmine Wells unreservedly passed on to students her baking techniques and was highly acclaimed for her detailed instruction and humorous speech. Having grasped the secrets of baking, everyone was itching for the big day. “How can we ever repay you?” the students asked. Ms. Wells simply shook her head and wished them good luck.

GoodHabitsLeadtoGoodResults

Many people fail to achieve ideal results even though they have strong wills in what they are doing. The fact is that it can be quite difficult to have a better outcome without a good habit.

When it comes to English learning, reflection can be one of the good habits. For example, to improve speaking skill, top English learners may record their speech and find out the wrongpronunciations when they listen. Their speaking ability develops by reflecting on their performances.

Forming good habits requires time and energy, so my suggestion is: never give up and keep practicing. Only in this way can we receive better results which meet our expectations.

示例2

GoodHabitsLeadtoGoodResults

Many people fail to achieve ideal results even though they have strong wills in what they are doing. The fact is that it can be quite difficult to have a better outcome withouta good habit.

For example, instead of getting into the cycle of coming home from school and watching TV, playing compiutor games or surfing the Internet, which is easy to become an addition and affect their schoolwork and health, many students would go for a walk or play basketball or badminton with friends or family, resulting in a good health and a better relationship.

How can we form good habits then? My suggetion is that show some passion and challenge ourselves to do something different every night, if only for one hour at least. Set goals, find a hobby that stimulates our mind, or just get around to doing all those little things weve been meaning to do. Once we resist allowing work to dominate ourlife, our reward will be a great sense of achievement.

第二节(满分25)

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

On the day of the bake sale, the students came to school with their baked goods. Their stand was soon packed solid with people who were attracted by the appetizing food. Students were busy introducing the flavors of doughnuts and dealing with curious customers interested in the ingredients. Ms. Hawkins had to push her way through the passionate eaters to reach the cashier. With the last shaft of sunshine fading, customers dragged their eyes away from the stand and left with satisfaction. “We made it!” beamed Ms. Hawkins and the students, gesturing the empty stand, feeling great satisfaction rippling through them.

Ms. Hawkins then collected all the money that they received for the day in a box. "We can go to the museum, right?" the students cuddled up around the box and twittered, eyes sparkling in expectation. Instead of saying anything, Ms. Hawkins replied with a broad smile spreading from ear to ear. Exchanging a knowing look, kids sprang to their feet and punched their fists in the air with cheers echoing over the square. After a brief silence came Tina's words.Lets invite Mrs. Wells!Tina proposed. RightWe wouldnt have made it without her, agreed everyone, with their hearts brimming with gratitude. It dawned on them that with joint efforts, they can actually make a difference and realize their goal.
