Part I
Writing(30 minutes)
Directions: Suppose the student union of your university is collecting opinions on improving its work for the coming year. You are now to write a response by suggesting how it can better enrich student life. You will have 30 minutes to write the essay. You should write at least 120 words but no more than 180 words.
A vibrant campus life does not emerge automatically; it depends largely on how effectively the student union responds to students’ real needs. To better enrich student life in the coming year, the student union should move beyond routine formalities and focus more on meaningful engagement.
To begin with, more student-centered activities should be introduced. Instead of organizing the same old cookie-cutter events, the union could host interdisciplinary workshops, career-sharing sessions, and stress-relief activities tailored to students’ actual concerns. College life is not all fun and games; many students struggle with academic pressure and career anxiety. Practical events that help students build skills or unwind would therefore hit different.
Meanwhile, the student union should strengthen communication with the student body. Too
often, activities are planned from the top down, leaving students feeling disconnected. Conducting regular surveys and creating open feedback channels would allow the union to better understand what students genuinely want rather than simply guessing.
Equally important is fostering a stronger sense of community. Volunteer programs, cultural festivals, and peer-support initiatives can help students feel more connected in an increasingly fast-paced campus environment.
Ultimately, enriching student life is not about staging flashy events for show. It is about creating a campus culture where students feel heard, supported, and inspired to grow.
In any vibrant university ecosystem, the student union plays a pivotal role in shaping campus life. As your union collects suggestions for the coming year, I would argue that the key lies not in doing more for students, but in doing things that truly matter.
To begin with, student life should be enriched through more diverse and high-quality activities. Instead of repetitive events that tick boxes, the union could roll out initiatives that actually resonate with students’ interests—such as interdisciplinary forums, career workshops with real-world insights, and creative cultural projects. In today’s fast-paced environment, students are not looking for “busywork,” but for experiences that genuinely add value.
Equally important is strengthening student participation in decision-making. When students are treated not just as recipients but as stakeholders, the union gains real legitimacy. Regular feedback channels, open discussions, and transparent communication would go a long way in closing the gap between organizers and participants.
Ultimately, improving student life is not about flashy slogans or one-off events. It is about staying in tune with students’ real needs and cutting through the noise. When the union keeps it real and keeps it relevant, campus life naturally becomes more engaging and meaningful.
