Education of young people is highly prioritized in many countries today. However, educating the adults who cannot read and write is also important and more public money should be spent on this. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Human capital research consistently shows that investment in early and adolescent education yields far higher lifetime returns than remedial adult programs. From an optimal resource allocation perspective, prioritizing youth education represents the more economically rational choice.
Well-educated youth today will not become tomorrow's illiterate adults. Preventing the problem at its source is far more cost-effective than remedial intervention after damage occurs. Strengthening youth education serves both current and future generations simultaneously.
Most countries have achieved near-universal basic education for youth. Diverting public funds away from this hard-won achievement risks backsliding on educational access—potentially creating new adult illiterates while trying to address old ones.
Educated youth drive decades of innovation and growth. Adult literacy, while individually beneficial, has limited macroeconomic impact. Public funds should prioritize areas generating the greatest aggregate social returns over time.
Educated parents are more likely to value and support their children's education, creating virtuous cycles. Investments in today's youth pay forward through their future parenting, generating spillover effects that adult literacy programs cannot match.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights enshrines education as a fundamental right. Hundreds of millions of illiterate adults were denied this through no fault of their own. Continued neglect forces vulnerable populations to bear lifelong costs for systemic failures.
Teaching an adult to read yields immediate benefits—better employment, medication adherence, helping children with homework. Poverty reduction and family welfare improve without decades-long waiting periods characteristic of youth education investments.
Research consistently identifies maternal literacy as a powerful predictor of children's educational outcomes. Investing in adult women's literacy improves children's nutrition, health, and school performance, breaking vicious intergenerational cycles of poverty and ignorance.
Aging societies face labor shortages and postponed retirement. Today's illiterate adults will remain in the workforce for decades. Literacy training is essential for maintaining productivity and enabling economic adaptation in rapidly transforming labor markets.
Increased funding for adult literacy need not come at youth education's expense. Many countries have room to raise overall education spending as a share of GDP. Through expanding total investment rather than reallocating, both sectors can be strengthened simultaneously.

Education of young people is highly prioritized in many countries today. However, educating the adults who cannot read and write is also important and more public money should be spent on this. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
While providing systematic schooling for children has been significantly emphasized today, there are an increasing number of people starting to stress the importance of adult education. They opine that teaching illiterate adults to read and write is even more crucial. In my opinion, the literacy rate of adults, though being vital, cannot be comparable to education for children.
Those who value adult education tend to stress its cost-efficiency. The first reason they may present is that by providing academic training for illiterate adults, governments are in fact enhancing the employ-abilityof the groups that are at their best ages to serve society. In other words, as soon as the uneducated grown-ups learn how to read and write, they can immediately make more productive contributions to their industries, which can directly facilitate a brisk economy. Another reason is that enrolling those who have never attended schools can enlighten them about the indispensable role that education can play in individuals' personal growth, which may be previously inconceivable to them. As a result, they can be more supportive of their children's academic pursuits, which can also have long-term benefits in increasing the whole society's literacy rate.
However, I still believe that more societal focus should still be placed on providing education to children. In the first place, children are undoubtedly fundamental to a society's future development, so ensuring the quality and availability of education for this stage is pivotal. However important that adult education is, the resources allocated for children's education should not be compromised, or else society may suffer from a lack of qualified labour in the future, resulting in the stagnation of many industries. In the second place, prioritizing education for children can be conducive to the security of society, because if there were not primary and secondary schools that keep the underage in academic activities, a colossal number of them, who are not allowed and able to work, may stroll in the streets all day long, and some of them may commit crimes.
In conclusion, paying more attention to adult education is definitely a laudable idea, but policy makers should never be shortsighted to retrench the investment in education for children. Otherwise, long-term detriments will gradually hamper the whole society.
