Passage 1

In fact, the fossils we commonly see in daily life usually include animal bones, animal shells, and sometimes even animal footprints. They provide critical evidence for the study of ancient organisms and their living conditions. By studying such relics, paleontologists can reconstruct the entire ecosystem of that era and trace animal evolution and migration over millions of years. Particularly valuable is that these remains allow researchers to study species that have long gone extinct. Scientists can use radioactive elements to date these specimens and examine their internal structures.

Passage 2

In the 19th century, industrialization in the United States drove the development of the nation and its cities. Large numbers of people moved to cities from rural areas, and many migrated abroad in search of better employment and better income and living conditions. As a result, cities expanded rapidly during that period. Meanwhile, industry saw powerful rise, along with the massive construction of infrastructure and the advancement of technology. However, this also created severe inequality and constant conflicts between factory owners and workers. Trade unions later emerged to restrict and balance the power of entrepreneurs.

Sociologists have summarized the demographic change trends during the transition from agriculture to industry, including shifts in mortality rates and other related dynamic changes.

In the early stage of industrialization, both birth rates and mortality rates remained high. At that time, medical conditions were poor, and people’s lives were fragile. With national development and improved medical standards, mortality rates dropped sharply. Nevertheless, birth rates stayed at a high level initially, which often led to rapid population growth and relative resource shortages, resulting in a mismatch between population size and available resources.

Later, as people began to invest heavily in education, birth rates declined significantly. This is because people attached greater importance to children’s education, and only with sufficient high-quality resources could well-rounded talents be cultivated. This trend is highly consistent with the overall goals pursued by society.

However, it also brings new challenges: population aging and labor shortages. Some demographers suggest that many countries may maintain an extremely low fertility rate in the long run. The impacts are complex. On one hand, demographic changes can drive social innovation due to market demand; on the other hand, they place a heavy burden on society. Society must fully adapt to such changes, otherwise potential problems will arise.

Nowadays, some hidden stores have emerged in urban areas. Usually located in city centers, they differ from regular shops: they are not designed for walk-in customers but serve as logistics distribution hubs.

With the growing demand for online shopping, land costs in city centers are extremely high. This new store model boasts high operational efficiency. It eliminates street-front storefronts to cut operating costs, which in turn lowers commodity prices and benefits consumers. These stores also feature fast delivery to meet customers’ demand for convenience. For example, some companies can deliver fresh food to customers within one hour via such hubs, something traditional supermarkets cannot achieve.

Still, the model has drawbacks. Its expansion will squeeze the sales of traditional retail stores and pose huge challenges to physical retailers. From a societal perspective, however, it creates more logistics and delivery jobs. While traditional store positions decrease, delivery job opportunities rise correspondingly.

Economists believe that automated technology will gradually be adopted in this new retail model, further reducing labor demand and completely reshaping people’s shopping experience. Meanwhile, store operators need to find ways to ease the pressure they bring to local communities.

Dear Professor,

I am writing to express my concern about the group project you have assigned to us. Due to uncooperative group members, the presentation you assigned to us might not be completed within two weeks. Specifically, two other group members who were supposed to collect materials and resources haven't completed their tasks, making it impossible for us to move to the next stage, creating PPTs. Plus, when we are supposed to hold meetings to discuss presentation requirements and details, some group members don't show up. As a result, we have to send emails to those who are absent, which decreases overall work efficiency. This has caused a lot of trouble and made me feel quite disappointed and frustrated. I sincerely hope you can recommend feasible solutions to me, including how to manage team members and improve efficiency. I am looking forward to your prompt response and a proper solution.

Yours faithfully

参考范文

Dear,

I am writing to share some ideas about a wonderful nearby tourist destination, and hope you will join and have fun together. I have researched that this destination is a large river surrounded by small hills, where people can appreciate natural beauty, such as flourishing trees and flowers. Tourists can also participate in various outdoor activities, including water surfing, boating, and barbecuing. I think they are great because tourists are offered free tents, tables, and chairs for outdoor barbecuing. These activities can be both interesting and meaningful. I wonder what you think about this trip, and it might be more engaging if you guys can join. Please feel free to share your own opinions and plans. I am also willing to help with the organization if needed. Let’s discuss it further.

Best wishes,

professor: Should schools regularly adjust their curricula according to changes in the job market? Do you agree or disagree?

Student A: holds that a stable curriculum system is the best way to support students. Since job recruitment trends change too fast, students should learn diverse knowledge and obtain certificates in college before pursuing professional studies.

Student B: argues that modern society changes rapidly, so schools should stay flexible. They need to design curricula that can adapt quickly and prepare students well for future careers.

professor: Social media enables people to exchange ideas freely, yet it also raises widespread concerns and doubts about false information. Do you agree that social media serves as an effective educational tool?

Student A thinks social media supports real-time communication and feedback, allowing students to stay in touch with professors after class.

Student B points out that students who do not use social media may feel marginalized. Besides, some students cannot afford mobile data anytime, which is unfair.
