Spring Break in China: A Time for Students to Refresh and Explore
This year, many Chinese provinces, including Sichuan, Jiangsu and Anhui, have introduced their first spring break for primary and secondary school students.
Spring break schedules are different across the country. It usually lasts two to three days, but in some areas, the break comes just before the three-day Qingming Festival in early April. In other places, it lasts until the May Day holiday or is put together with weekends, making the break five to eight days long. In Deyang, Sichuan, students cheered loudly when they learned their spring break would come with no homework to worry about.
“The break is a great chance for students to get close to nature,” said Shi Ai, assistant principal of Deyang No. 1 Primary School. “It is good for their body and mind.” The new vacation brings many good changes. It helps cut down students’ school stress, and also gives families time to travel together. Data from a travel website shows that flight bookings from Chengdu rose by 50% in early April compared with last year. Chengdu East Railway Station handled over 336,000 passenger trips on the first day of spring break.
To help working parents stay with their kids,Zhejiang encourages employers to offer more flexiblework hours. Some scenic spots also let students visit for free and hold special activities to attract young visitors. These warm measures make the spring break more meaningful for both children and parents.The idea of spring break is not new. It was first tried in Hangzhou in 2004, and has now become a national rule.
