And guess what?!

Some people think news has no connection to people's lives, so it is a waste of time to read the news in the newspaper and watch television news programs. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

have a direct bearing on …(与……

make informed decisions(做出明智的决定)

a well-informed citizen(了解情况的公民)

Far from being a waste of time, …(远非浪费时间,恰恰相反……)

It is sometimes argued that reading newspapers or watching TV news programs is pointless, as the news has little to do with(和...没有什么关系ordinary people’s lives. I strongly disagree with this view.

To begin with, news coverage(新闻报道) is closely connected to our daily decisions and well-being. Weather forecasts affect what we wear and whether we travel. Reports on inflation(通货膨胀), housing policies, or fuel prices directly influence household budgets(直接影响家庭预算). Traffic updates help us choose the best route to work. Without such information, people would struggle to plan effectively(努力制定有效的计划). Far from being a waste of time, staying informed about these practical matters saves money, time, and even lives.

Moreover, news plays a vital role in(起着至关重要的作用) building an engaged and responsible citizenry(积极参与和负责任的公民). When people follow political developments, public health announcements, or environmental issues, they are better equipped to participate in society — whether by voting wisely, following safety guidelines, or supporting community initiatives. A democracy(民主) without informed citizens is like a ship without a captain. Therefore, consuming news is not self-indulgent(自我放纵); it is a civic duty(公民义务).

That said, I admit that not all news content is valuable. Some media outlets prioritize celebrity gossip or sensationalized stories(优先考虑名人八卦或耸人听闻的故事) that have little impact on real life. Spending hours on such trivial(琐碎的matters would indeed be wasteful. However, this reflects poor media choices, not the inherent worthlessness(固有的无价值性) of news itself. The sensible approach is to select reliable sources and focus on relevant topics.

In conclusion, news remains deeply relevant to everyday life and democratic participation(民主参与). While people should avoid low-quality content(避免低质量内容)dismissing(驳回all news as a waste of time is both unrealistic and unwise.

考场上遇到“to what extent do you agree or disagree”,记住一个原则:别走极端。
