Many people have the habit of looking at their phones before bed or keeping a small night light on because they are afraid of the dark. However, these common behaviors are actually bad for our health. Light at night can harm our sleep, blood sugar, heart and blood vessels.

Studies show that sleeping with light on can raise the risk of heart diseases and diabetes. It may also make people easier to get fat. Light at night stops the body from producing melatonin, which helps us sleep well. It also breaks our body clock and makes blood sugar and blood pressure abnormal. Even weak light from phones or chargers can bring health problems.

Three groups of people should be more careful: people with high blood pressure, high blood sugar or high fat, the old and people who often have trouble sleeping.

To keep healthy, we can do some easy things. First, use thick curtains or an eye mask to make the bedroom dark. Second, stop using phones, TVs and other electronic devices before sleeping. Third, cover the small lights on machines with tape. Fourth, use a soft low-watt night light if you have to get up at night.

Keeping our bedroom completely dark at night is a simple and useful way to protect our health.
