Qian Xuesen: the father of China’s aerospace
Qian Xuesen was a pioneer in the development of China’s aerospace science and technology. In 1999, he received the Two Bombs and One Satellite Merit Award. He is called the “father of China’s aerospace” and “king of rockets”.
钱学森：中国航天之父
钱学森是中国航天科技（technology）发展的先驱（pioneer）。1999 年，他荣获（receive）“两弹一星” 功勋奖（award），被誉为 “中国航天之父” 和 “火箭之王”。
Qian was born in Shanghai in 1911. He studied engineering at Shanghai Jiao Tong University and then went to further his education in the USA. In 1939, he was awarded a doctorate in Aerospace Engineering and Mathematics. After that, he spent many years teaching and doing research at universities in the USA.
钱学森 1911 年出生于上海。他在上海交通大学学习工程学（engineering），随后赴美国深造教育（education）。1939 年，他被授予（award）航空航天工程与数学博士学位。此后，他在美国多所大学任教并从事研究（research）多年。
While in the USA, Qian achieved lots of success and he was a well-respected person in his field. However, he decided to return to China when he heard of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. He was eager to bring his knowledge and skills to his homeland and began planning his return.
在美国期间，钱学森取得了诸多成就，是该领域备受尊敬的（well-respected）人物。然而，当他听闻中华人民共和国建立（found）的消息后，毅然决定回国。他渴望（eager）将自己的知识与技能带回祖国，并开始规划返程。
Qian finally got back to China in 1955. Once home, he worked tirelessly to raise the level of China’s science and technology. One of Qian’s greatest achievements was in the field of aerospace engineering. He played a key role in developing China’s first rocket. Thanks to his groundbreaking research, China became one of the few countries in the world to explore space. His influence is still present today in the Long March rocket programme and other space missions.
钱学森最终于 1955 年回到中国。归国后，他不懈努力，致力于 提升（raise）中国的科技水平。钱学森最伟大的成就之一，便是在航天工程领域：他为中国第一枚火箭的研发发挥了关键作用。凭借他开创性的研究，中国成为世界上少数能够探索太空的国家之一。时至今日，他的影响力仍体现在长征火箭项目及其他航天任务（mission）中。
Qian devoted himself to his country, and his great work brought honour and success to China. Still, Qian lived a simple life and was not interested in fame or money. He said, “If after I die the public feels I have made some contributions during my life, that approval would be the highest praise of all.”
钱学森奉献（devote）毕生给祖国，他的卓越成就为中国带来了荣誉（honour）与辉煌。即便如此，他始终过着简朴的生活，淡泊名利。他曾说：“如果我死后，公众（public）认为我一生有所贡献（contribution），这份认可（approval）便是我得到的最高赞誉（praise）。”

Basketball Star — Yao Ming
In 2002, Yao Ming decided to enter the NBA draft and was drafted to the Houston Rockets in June. He was the first international player without US college experience to be the Number 1 choice in the NBA draft. He soon grew to be a great player. In December of the same year, he was named Rookie of the Month. In 2004, Yao scored a career high of forty-one points in one game. In 2005, Yao Ming got the most votes in the NBA All-Star voting, which broke the record held by Michael Jordan.

But his personality and hard work helped him to win his teammates’ and his fans’ respect. He worked hard and was always trying to improve. The training paid off for him, and for his fans.

A Good Role Model
I'm the eldest child in my family, so I need to set a good example for my two little cousins. I learnt from my mother. She is my role model. Mum was also the eldest child in her family. She has two younger brothers. Mum was always calm, fair, and wise beyond her years. Even when Mum was only six years old, she used to share with her brothers. If there was one piece of cake, Mum would cut it into three pieces and let her brothers choose their pieces first. I do the same with my cousins.
Mum says that if I do the right things, my cousins will do the right things, too. I work hard at school, and I try to be helpful and kind all the time. As soon as I finish my homework, I always ask Grandma if I can help her with anything. Sometimes she wants me to help with the housework, but usually she just asks me to help my cousins with their homework.
Sometimes, there's a lot of pressure to be a good role model, but it makes me stronger. I guess I'm lucky to have Mum as an example. I hope that I can do as well as Mum, and that when my cousins grow up, they respect me as much as Mum's brothers respect her.
