They did this to remember soldiers who died in 1949 to set the city free. 2026
This year is the 31st year of the “walking ideological and political education class (行走的思政课)”, a tradition that began in 1995 and has encouraged more than 30,000 students.
The journey begins before the sun comes up. The people take part carry white flowers they made by hand and sing patriotic (爱国的) songs like Ode to the Motherland. They walk through mountain paths (小路) to Renshanhe Martyrs' Cemetery, where 391 soldiers are sleeping—many of whom were teenagers aged 18-25. The walk is not easy. People often face rain or snow. In 2021, a snowstorm turned the trip into a 14-hour fight, yet everyone didn't give up.
This activity mixes history with learning by doing. Students study battle maps (作战地图) in geography class, write poems to martyrs (烈士), and act out historical stories during English lessons. At the cemetery (墓地), they clean tombstones and read the names of fallen soldiers. One student shared, “Touching the cold stones made me understand their bravery of giving up their lives for our country.”
Over the years, the walk has become a national model for education. Many who used to be students, like spacecraft engineer Yan Qi, believe the walk taught them to be strong and work as a team. Teachers say it helps students understand the price of peace better than textbooks ever could.
This 31-year tradition shows that education is not just about books—it's about feeling history with your feet and heart. As one teacher said, “When students walk this path, they carry forward both memory and responsibility (责任感).”
