Headphones are helpful. Many kids use them. But headphones can be harmful, Jackie Clark said. They are bad for our ears.
There are cells (细胞) inside the ears that help us hear. We can’t see them with our eyes. “We call them hair cells,” Clark says. “They are easy to hurt. Loud noise can hurt them. When the hair cells are hurt, we can’t hear well.”
To protect our ears, Clark says, keep our headphones at about half volume. Don’t use them for too long. Take a break every 30 minutes. Also, don’t listen to music too loud when you are on the bus or in the car. The noise there is already loud.

A篇
When I was a kid, I loved to go fishing with my dad. But the only thing that wasn’t very fun about it was that he could catch many fish while I couldn’t catch anything. I usually got pretty upset and kept asking him why. He always answered, “Son, if you want to catch a fish, you have to think like a fish.”
I remember being even more upset then because, “I’m not a fish!” I didn’t know how to think like a fish. Besides, I reasoned, how could what I think influence what a fish does?
As I got a little older I began to understand what my dad really meant. So, I read some books on fish. And I even joined the local fishing club and started attending the monthly meetings. I learned that a fish is a cold-blooded animal and therefore is very sensitive to water temperature. That is why fish prefer shallow water to deep water because the former is warmer. Besides, water is usually warmer in direct sunlight than in the shade. Yet, fish don’t have any eyelids (眼皮) and the sun hurts their eyes… The more I understood fish, the more I became effective at finding and catching them.
When I grew up and entered the business world, I remember hearing my first boss say, “We all need to think like sales people.” But it didn’t completely make sense. My dad never once said, “If you want to catch a fish you need to think like a fisherman.” What he said was, “You need to think like a fish.”
Years later, with great efforts to promote long-term services to people much older and richer than me, I gradually learned what we all need is to think more like customers. It is not an easy job. I will show you how in the following chapters.
21. Why was the writer upset when he went fishing with his dad?
A. He couldn’t catch a fish. B. His dad was not patient with him.
C. His dad did not teach him fishing. D. He could not influence a fish.
22. What did the writer’s dad really mean?
A. To read books about fish. B. To learn fishing by oneself.
C. To understand how fish think. D. To study fishing in many ways.
23. According to the writer, fish prefer to stay in ____.
A. deep water in sunlight B. deep water in the shade
C. shallow water in sunlight D. shallow water in the shade
24. What can we infer from the passage?
A. The writer’s dad was a good fisherman.
B. The writer’s first boss was a sales person.
C. The writer understood his dad better as he grew up.
D. The writer became a successful businessman at last.
25. What is the best title for the passage?
A. How to Catch Fish B. Think Like a Fish
C. How to Sell Things D. Think Like a Fisherman
B篇
In the past, people used to travel to foreign countries because they thought they would be different in many ways—the buildings, the food, the national dresses and so on. At present, however, one large city is similar to another. They all have their Hilton or Sheraton Hotels everywhere. They all have their McDonald’s, their KFCs and their Pizza Huts. Office buildings look the same everywhere, and most city centers are full of office buildings. And of course, people are driving the same brands (品牌) of Japanese or European cars.
Then what is the foreign travel for? What do tourists hope to experience in a foreign country that they cannot experience at home? The answer could be that people are very interested in the past. It is a nation’s history and culture that are the main attractions. Most people travel overseas to find out what foreign countries’ history and cultures used to be like, not what they are like today. Tourists try to learn the history and culture of foreign countries by visiting different kinds of museums.
Every country also has its own beautiful places for tourists to visit. Their own special scenery (风景) would certainly attract tourists from other countries.
Finally, there is perhaps a country’s attraction: its people. A country is not just its old buildings, its works of art or beautiful places, it’s also the people who live in it. This is why a country such as Thailand attracts millions of people every year. They come mainly because of the friendliness of the Thai people. It is why the Pacific Islands are also so popular. There may not be much to see or do in Fiji, but there are lots of friendly, smiling people to make visitors feel welcome.
26. What did people travel abroad for in the past?
A. To experience different things. B. To learn foreign languages.
C. To taste delicious food. D. To visit beautiful places.
27. According to the passage, what do most tourists like to visit now?
A. Universities. B. Museums. C. Cinemas. D. Supermarkets.
28. Why is Thailand so popular with tourists?
A. Because it has lots of old buildings. B. Because it has beautiful scenery.
C. Because its people are friendly. D. Because its food is delicious.
29. What can we learn from the passage?
A. All big cities are exactly the same. B. People like to travel to different countries now.
C. Foreign travel is more popular than before. D. History and culture attract many tourists.
30. What is the passage mainly about?
A. The importance of traveling. B. The reasons for foreign travel.
C. The places people like to visit. D. The changes in foreign travel.
