Taking risks is part of life. It may bring good results, or cause you to lose. To help students understand the idea, a math teacher named Marilyn Burns designed a simple dice game called “100 or Less”. The game is not only about numbers, but also about learning how to balance risk and choice.

WHAT YOU NEEDa 6-sided dice

HOW YOU PLAYTwo or more players play the game.

All players roll the dice (掷骰子) once. The player with the lowest number goes first.

Players take turns to roll the dice.

After each roll, the player chooses to keep the number or multiply () it by 10.

Write down the score after each turn. Here is an example:

Hey kids! Sleep is important! You might have heard this before. Scientists found out that sleep helps you grow strong and keeps you from getting sick. And guess what? A new study shows sleep also works on your grades.

The scientist, Jeffrey Grossman, wanted to see how sleep helps students in school. He asked 100 students to wear a special wristband (腕带) called Fitbit. This cool thing can tell how long you sleep and if you wake up a lot during the night. The students wore these wristbands all term long, and at the end, Grossman looked at their sleep information.

He found some interesting things. As expected, kids who tossed and turned a lot at night didn’t do well on their tests. The same went for those who didn’t get enough sleep. ▲  Whether you sleep more or less during the night before the test does nothing to your grades! So is staying up studying before the big test okay? No!!! What really mattered was sleeping the same hours every night for a week or even a month before the test. “That means a student who sleeps seven hours at night, every night, will do better than a student who sleeps 7.5 hours one night and 6.5 another night,” Grossman said. This was really unexpected!

How long you sleep, how well you sleep, and sleeping the same hours every night together made a big difference to your test scores. And it appeared especially important for boys. Grossman’s team is not sure why. But boys who didn’t sleep well or fell asleep at different times did worse on tests than girls who had the same sleep. These findings show that sleep is really important for students to study well in school. And knowing how to get good sleep can make a big difference!

13According to the passage, Fitbit can ________.

Ahelp you fall asleep easilyBfix your sleeping problem

Ctell how well you sleepDmake you sleep longer

14What BIG question does paragraph 2 answer?

AHow long should we sleep?BHow did Grossman do the study?

CWhy is sleep so important?DWhat did Grossman find?

15Which of the following can be put in ▲ ?

AAnd here’s a big surprise.BAnd we know little about those.

CSleeping well comes first.DSo make sure you get enough sleep.

16According to the study, which line chart (线型图) may be from the student with the best grade?

Many people think it’s important and good for health to wash the food before cooking it. But for some food like eggs, washing can do more harm (坏处) than good.

People like to wash the shell () before they cook the egg. They want to make sure the egg is clean and there are no germs (细菌) on it. But they don’t need to do this, because factories (工厂) will do the cleaning work when they sell the eggs.

There is a coating on the shell of the egg. With the coating, germs can not get into the egg easily. When factories do the cleaning work, they wash away the coating and put a kind of special thing on the egg shell. It is there to keep germs from coming into the egg.

“Of course there are germs on the egg, but by washing it, you make it worse (更糟糕的). The egg shell is porous (可渗透的). The water can get germs into the egg when you wash it,” says health scientist Amy Leigh Mercree. “And this can happen more easily when you use cold water or running water.”

“So don’t wash eggs—save yourself some time and keep the germs where they are,” Mercree says.
