The decision facing young people—whether topursue higher educationor enter the workforce directly in order to serve their community and country—is a matter of considerable debate. While both paths have merit, I believe that attending college is the superior option, as it ultimately brings greater benefits to both the individual and society, even though I recognize the powerful drawof youthful idealism.
Firstly, choosing to attend university is a prudent decision for young people seeking to maximize their career potential. In today's knowledge-based economy, the theoretical understanding and practical skills acquired at university provide a much stronger foundation upon which to build a long and prosperous career. This explains why, in my country at least, higher education is widely regarded as an essential pathway to upward social mobility. Students believe that successful completion of their studies will lead to a higher standard of living for themselves and their families—a belief that is largelyborne out by employment statistics.
However, other young people are driven by more abstract ideals, such as compassion and a desire to help others. For various reasons, certain individuals are not motivated by the material rewards that a university degree typically promises. Instead, they find purpose in serving those less fortunate than themselves, feeling that improving the lives of others is more meaningful than accumulating personal wealth and status. Consequently, people with this disposition often choose not to pursue education beyond the compulsory level, opting instead for a life of immediate service to the world around them—whether by joining religious charity missions, enlisting in the military, or engaging in community development work.
In my view, even those with a strong inclination towards community service should consider attending university first, because higher education amplifies their capacity to help. For example, young people concerned about world hunger can potentially make a far greater contribution by becoming agronomists and improving crop yields in nutrient-deficient regions than if they were confined to the manual labour or entry-level positions typically available to a high school graduate. Thus, university education can transform good intentions into impactful expertise.
In summary, I believe that all young people—regardless of their ultimate career aspirations—would benefit from attending university before embarking on their chosen path of service. At the same time, we must acknowledge that some individuals are so strongly impelled by altruistic motivations that it becomes difficult for them to remain in the classroom when they feel called to act immediately.
