My earliest lessons in science came not from a laboratory but in the livingroom, with my father in his costume and top hat. By day, he was a physician whomesmerized patients with his easy confidence. By night, he was a magician whodazzled guests with his clever tricks, conjuring (用魔法变出) coins from behind ears or producing scarves from his sleeve. To me, hewas both healer and magician, a scientist and showman.

When your father is a magician, what do you believe? As a child, theboundary between real and unreal was porous. But even as a boy, I beganto notice the seams: the flash of a hidden card, the tiny bulge in his sleevewhere the coin waited. What others applauded as mystery became for me a problemwaiting to be solved. I learned that every illusion (错觉 ), no matter how charming, had a mechanism beneath it. I became my father’sassistant. But I was also his skeptic. If a trick fooled me, I made it my jobto discover how. Magic was an invitation to look closer, to ask: How does thisreally work? That question drove my enthusiasm for science.

Later, as a neurologist, I would return to these early lessons. A magicianmisdirects attention; so too does the brain. A conjurer exploits expectation;so does perception. Illusion, whether on stage or in the cortex, depends on ourwillingness to fill in the gaps, to accept appearances at face value. The boy whoonce peered into his father's sleeves to see what was hidden became the man wholistened attentively and openly when patients described hidden worlds ofperception. Magic had taught me that the improbable might still have anexplanation-if only one was willing to look hard enough.

To this day, when I step into a lecture hall or clinic, I carry bothinheritances (遗传特征): the magician’s sense of wonder and the scientist’s demand for proof. What is broken can be made whole, and what seems impossible can be understood. That is the greatest trick I ever learned.

24. What role did the author's father play in theauthor’s life?

A. A physician who taught him science in a lab.

B. A magician who inspired his scientific curiosity.

C. A neurologist who helped him understand the brain.

D. A performer who encouraged him to become a showman

25. What does the underlined word “porous” inparagraph 2 probably mean?

A. Indistinct.B.Flexible.C.Apparent.D. Unbreakable

26. How did the author react to his father’s magictricks as a child?

A. He accepted them as mysterious wonders.

B. He simply enjoyed them as entertainment.

C. He tried to discover the secrets behind them

D. He admired his father’s talent for performance.

27. What is the main idea of the text?

A. Magic tricks are similar to how our brain works

B. A father taught his son both magic and medicine.

C. Magic inspired a lifelong passion for scientific career.

D. Learning magic requires careful observation and practice

Have you ever received an email claiming you’ve won a lottery you neverentered? Or a call from someone pretending to be from your bank, urging you toact fast? If so, you’re not alone. Scams (诈骗)havebeen everywhere, and they are evolving faster in today’s digital world. Eventhe smartest, most educated people fall forthem

Scammers know that when we feel pressured, we’re more likely to makeimpulsive ( 冲动的) decisions. Whether it’s an email saying, “Your account will be suspendedin 24 hours!” or a call claiming “Your social security number has been at risk,”Being scared confuses logical thinking, and stimulates a fight-or-flightresponse in our brains, pushing us to act quickly. When urgency is combinedwith official-sounding messages, we tend to trust them instinctively (本能地).

Ever seen scams in the form of messages from Amazon, Netflix, or even thegovernment? Scammers use authority figures or well-known brands to make theircybercrimes seem reasonable. If it looks official, our brain assumes it must bereal. For example, many scams pretend to be from your employer or your bank, using official-looking emails with logos and brands. This social proof tricks eventhe most skeptical individuals into believing the scam is real.

Whether it’s false investment opportunities, NFT scams, or promises ofunbelievable returns, scammers take advantage of FOMO (Fear of Missing Out). They know that the attractiveness of easy money can make even the most sensibleperson ignore red flags. This is why Ponzi schemes and pyramid scams are sosuccessful. They promise high returns with little effort, making people hard toresist.

From false online lovers to people impersonating (冒充) family members in distress, scammers take advantage of our emotions. Theymake us feel responsible, guilty, or hopeful, convincing us to take actions wenormally wouldn’t.

Romance scams are the most destructive. Victims often lose not only theirmoney but also their self-confidence and trust in others. Scammers spend weeksor months building a relationship before asking for financial help, making itharder for victims to see the warning signs.

28. What causes some people to believe theiraccount will be suspended soon?

A. That they tend to act impulsively.

B. That the logic in the message was very clear.

C. That the message came from a trusted sender.

D. That the message created fear and seemed official.

A. They use official logos and brands to appear legal.

B. Scammers rest on people's greed for huge profits.

D. They promise high investment and high returns.

30. How do scammers cost victims their money andconfidence?

A. By building emotional bonds with them.

B. By sending official-looking documents.

C. By promising high returns with no effort.

D. By threatening to suspend their account.

31. What is the author’s purpose of writing thispassage?

A. To provide people with strategies to escape scams

B. To warn readers about the dangers of online scams

C. To compare the features of different types of scams

D. To analyze the psychological tricks used by cheats.

Road transport contributes to about 16 percent of global carbon dioxide, but what if our cars could actually start capturing (捕获) what they send out while running on the road?

Student engineers have revealed their design of the world’s first “carbonneutral car”, which removes and stores carbon dioxide from the air as it drivesdown the road. Air flows in through a grilleon the front of the vehicle, which goes through a filter (过滤器 ) that separates and stores the greenhouse gas.

The electric vehicle (EV), known as “Zem”, was engineered by theTU/ecomotive team from the Eindhoven University of Technology in theNetherlands. The vehicle also has solar panels on its roof, enabling it to beused as an external battery for a house. “We are cleaning the air while drivingand aiming to become completely CO2 neutral,” said team manager Louise de Laat.“It is still a proof of concept, but we can see that we will increase thecapacity of the filter in the coming years. CapturingCO2 is a must for makingup for emissions during production and recycling.”

The team claims that up to two kilograms of carbon dioxide could be removedfor 12,800 miles the car travels per year using its “direct air capturetechnology”. If the technology is used in the millions of cars on the roadaround the world, it has the potential to make a real contribution to reducing greenhousegases.

The student engineers also designed the car so that it can be recycled whenit reaches the end of its life. Parts of it are made from sustainable materialslike recycled plastics.

Future challenges for these technologies include finding ways to adjust thetemperature of exhaust gas to a level atwhich CO2 can be captured more efficiently, and address increases to vehicleweight or decreases to in-vehicle space that could result from the introductionof capture equipment. While it is unclear what will happen to the gas after itis collected from the filter, previous projects have used CO2 tomake building materials, or have stored it underground.

32. What is one striking feature of Zem designed bystudent engineers?

A. It is powered entirely by solar panels on its roof.

B. It can be used as an external battery for homes.

C. It absorbs atmospheric CO2 while we're driving.

D. It is made completely from sustainable materials.

33. What’s Louise de Laat’s attitude towards Zem’sfuture development?

A. Doubtful.C.Unclear.B.Optimistic.D. Cautious.

34. Which technical aspect of Zem needs to beimproved?

A. Adjust the temperature inside Zem.

B. Store CO2 collected underground.

C. Replace Zem’s filter regularly.

D. Decrease the vehicle weight.

35. What might be written about following the lastparagraph?

A. The exact date of Zem’s being launched.

B. The research into the use of CO2 collected.

C. The new method of storing CO2 underground.

D. The breakthrough in extending Zem’s lifespan.

67.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Friday afternoon’s final bell felt like the start of freedom. Theschoolyard erupted into its usual joyful chaos, a mix of slamming lockers, shouted plans, and laughter that seemed to bounce off the very bricks of thebuilding. Lisa, with her backpack over one shoulder, moved through the crowd, her mind already miles away, picturing the movie night with her friends.

But as she cut across the football field, heading for the shortcut home, asplash of color near the bleachers (天看) caught her eye. It was a small, well-lovednotebook, its cover slightly curled (卷曲) fromuse. Hesitating for only a moment, she picked it up.

The cover was common, but the inside was full of treasure. Page after pagewas filled not with notes, but the most brilliant and funny was comic strips ( 连环漫画漫 ). Each one was a skillfully drawn picture of their own school life: thedramatic despair over a surprise quiz in Mr. Thompson's class, the wild rushfor the last piece of pizza in the canteen, the universal struggle of trying tostay awake during

the headmaster’s long Monday morning speeches

The characters, though cartoonish, were instantly recognizable types. Lisafound herself laughing out loud at a strip about two students trying tosecretly pass a note, only to have it land perfectly on the teacher’s desk. Theartist had an incredible talent for capturing the funny and sweet sides oftheir everyday routines. Her heart was filled with admiration. This person wasa genius! But who was this person? She quickly looked through the pages, fromfront to back, searching for a name, a class, anything. There was nothing, except for a small, consistently doodledsignature on the bottom corner of the last page—a tiny, five-pointed star. Holding the notebook to her chest, Lisa knewwhat she had to do. Such a lively talent couldn’t remain lost and silent. Shehad to find its owner.

注意:

1. 续写词数应为150左右;

2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Lisa decided to put up a “Lost and Found” poster.

Just as Lisa was feeling discouraged, a shy voice came from behind, “That’s.. that’s my notebook.”

Dear Lucy,

I’mglad to hear about the Chinese culture experience class in your school. Asfor the choice between facial mask painting and paper cutting, I stronglyrecommend the former.

First, facial masks are a symbolic art of Peking Opera, with each color representing adifferent character trait—like red for loyalty and white for dishonesty.Second, painting one by yourselfwill give you a hands-on feel for this traditional art form. It’s creative andfun, and you can take your unique mask home as a special souvenir.江苏省海安高级中学景苏华 QQ:771515126

Text 9 人物采访

W: Martin, how do you like playing a superhero?

M: Overall, it makes me proud. But it reallybothered me to stay fit. And keeping the superhero face on is quite tiring too.Yet, those challenges don’t even come close to the difficulty of chasing andfighting. You have to make concerted efforts to act as if it’s effortless.

W: I heard you grew up in Canada. How was that?

M: I have many family members there. I went to aninternational school, but the best thing was the fantastic countryside near myhome. I spent most weekends camping in the forest, which was really great.

W: So how did you get into acting?

M: Well, at university, I studied literature butnever acted in any drama. After graduating, I worked as an assistant for aproducer, working on a musical comedy. One night an actor was ill and I wasasked to play his part and it just went from there.

W: What would you have done if you hadn’t become anactor?

M: Well, both my parents devote themselves toeducational careers. Even so, it hardly interested me. My older brother owns acompany and he said that I could have a job in his office. I guess that’s whatI’d probably have done.
